Federal elections (formally the 17th Abeldane general election) were held in Abelden and took place during the period of 29 to 30 of September 2018, following a decision made by the Reichsregierungskabinett, to elect members to the Reichsversammlung of the 9th Reichsversammlung. The writs were issued by Emperor Newton a week before the election. This was the first time that a governing party with absolute majority in the Reichsversammlung was to defend their seats and the first time that the same candidates for Vorsitzender from the previous election faced again on the next election.
Die Rechte, led by Stephen Freayth, won 6 seats plus 1 appointed seat, allowing it to form an another majority government, the first time a party has done so consecutively. The Liberty Union, led by Horatio Eden, won 2 seats plus 1 appointed seat and became a part of the government even though Die Rechte had the majority and thus formed a grand coalition. The Abeldane Social Ecology, led by Ava Neasa, saw its lowest seat representation in the Reichsversammlung since its establishment with just 1 seat down from 3 seats previously. Neasa then continued to be the Leader of the Opposition. The Abeldane Liberal National Alliance did not contest and lost all its 4 seats.
Freayth decided to run for a second term and became Die Rechte's candidate for Vorsitzender with Max Pollack, who is seeking for a reelection as Stellvertreter, as his running mate. Neasa became the candidate of Social Ecology for Vorsitzender. Horatio Eden planned to run for Vorsitzender from the Liberty Union and was widely seen as a potential candidate but ultimately decided against it although Edward Daniels decided to continue to run for Stellvertreter. Freayth won, which was widely expected, although with a decreased majority compared from the last election. The race for Stellvertreter was close although Daniels was hailed as the winner in the end.
Although Die Rechte had a decrease in its seats, it still maintained a majority and won 70% of the popular vote, the largest share a party won in a Reichsversammlung election since its implementation in 2017. This was the first time that the same ticket for a party ran again (Freayth and Pollack) and the first time two incumbents ran for reelection. This election marks the first contested elections in the Empire following the enactment of the 2018 Constitution. The seats of the Reichsversammlung were also reduced from 18 to 11.
