Lord Sir Sam Aniel Maude, 3rd Count of Maternia KCM KOF BA is an Adammic politician and diplomat who formerly served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs during his time as leader of the Labour Party. He later served as the first Speaker of the House of Citizens and then as Minister of Finance, having defected to the Independent Party. He is currently Adammia's Ambassador to the United Kingdom.
Non-micronational life
Sam Maude is a graduate student of the University of Birmingham, where he studied International Relations.
Micronational career
Maude met Adam I, Emperor of Adammia through the University of Birmingham Liberal Democrats. He was invited to move into Serkatia for the 2018-19 academic year, and was appointed as its Duke in June 2018, giving him a seat on the Ruling Council. He joined the inactive Labour Party, giving it its first Council seat for over half a year, effectively restarting the party. After the party's founder, Lord Sir Reginald Hall, stood down as party president, Maude assumed the position in September 2018. Maude stood in the 2018 National election where he prioritised constitutional reform and tax reforms. He placed third out of 3 candidates with 6 votes (17.1% of the vote). Juliano Saunders of the new populist Storm Party won the election in a surprise landlslide. Commenting, Maude urged Liberal-Moderate leader Alex Helliker to resign and promised to work with Saunders to achieve constitutional reform. He declared that "we [Labour] are back and we will grow. The days of establishment hegemony are truly over".
Maude entered a coalition government with Saunders, becoming Deputy Prime Minister and foreign minister. During his term, he frequently acted as a voice of compromise between the Storm Party and the opposition Liberal-Moderates. Most notably, he worked to defuse diplomatic tensions between Storm officials and the neighbouring nation of Wazakhstan over a border dispute.
In September 2019, Maude handed over the leadership of his party to Billy Thompson, ahead of the imminent general election. After winning a seat in that election, Maude was elected as the first ever Speaker of the House. In January 2020, he was appointed as Adammia's first official Ambassador to the United Kingdom.
In September 2020, Maude left the RGA and joined the Independent Party, standing at #2 on the party's list in the 2020 general election. He was subsequently re-elected to the House, but did not re-stand for Speaker after having been largely inactive in the role. He promoted the Independent Party's policy of introducing a voluntary income tax during the election campaign, and was appointed Minister of Finance in the Second Saunders Cabinet with the intent of implementing this policy. Although the voluntary income tax was included in the 2020 Budget, it was never fully implemented, largely on account of Maude's increasing inactivity. He did not contest the 2021 general election, and is now generally considered to have retired as a politician, although he remains the Ambassador to the UK.
