A micronational summit (also intermicronational summit, micronational convention or micro summit) is a formal gathering of micronationalists. Some also have a considerable number of media in attendance. These summits provide a place for micronationalists to meet, exchange ideas, sign treaties, and engage in other diplomatic relations. The majority of summits were held in Europe and North America. The largest micronational convention is MicroCon, which has been hosted biennially in odd years since 2015.[1] Attendance at micronational summits has been growing, with the number of summits, total attendance of all summits and maximum size of a single summit all growing over the period 2011–present.[2] In total, 9 summits were held in the United Kingdom, 9 in the United States, 5 in Taiwan, 4 in France and 3 on the African continent, 4 in the Czech Republic, 2 in Brazil, and 1 in Finland, Mexico, Australia, Indonesia, Italy and Canada.
A number of micronational summits have been hosted by intermicronational organisations, such as the Grand Unified Micronational which hosted a summit in Birmingham,[3] Taiwanese Micronational Alliance which has hosted five summits in Taipei and MicroFrancophonie which has hosted two micronational summits between its member states.[4][5]
In total, some 30 documented micronational summits have taken place. The first known micronational summit took place in Helsinki in 2003.[6]
Activities
Most micronationalists who attend summits engage in signing treaties with other micronations. Other common activities include various discussions and presentations. Each MicroCon allows a presentation secession, where various micronationalists hold presentations on various aspects of micronationalism. When a summit is hosted by an intermicronational organisation, the member states of that organisation may have discussions relating to its business, such as the Grand Unified Micronational which had a in-person Quorum meeting. Some other activities may also include going out to eat at a local restaurant or pub.
History
Before the 2000s
Various Japanese micronations held micronational summits from 1983 to 1985, and some of them formed confederations.[citation needed]
2000s
In August 2003, a summit of micronations took place in Helsinki at Finlandia Hall, the site of the Conference for Security and Co-operation in Europe (CSCE).[7] The summit lasted for 3 days, and had 16 attendees.[8] The summit was attended by delegations of the Principality of Sealand, the Kingdoms of Elgaland-Vargaland, NSK-State in Time, Ladonia, the Transnational Republic, the State of Sabotage and by scholars from various academic institutions.[9][10][11]
A summit took place on 20 September 2005, between the President of Molossia Kevin Baugh, Grand Duke Travis and Grand Duchess Cathryn of Westarctica. The summit took place in Kevin Baugh's hotel suite in the United States, in Washington, D.C. Various orders and awards were given at the summit, and discussions on matters of micronational protocol, history and politics took place at a nearby restaurant.[12]
The African Micronational Summit was an annual summit between micronationalists in the African sector, primarily consisting of micronations in Southern Africa.[13] The 2005 African Micronational Summit took place in South Africa on 9 October, and was hosted by Sigland. It had 9 attendees from 5 micronations. The 2006 African Micronational Summit took place in Ünie on 11 September, which was also the host of the event. It had 16 attendees from 7 micronations. The final summit took place between 2–3 July 2007, and was hosted by Adronia.[14] It had 28 attendees, and held the record for the most attended micronational summit until the record was beaten by PoliNation in 2012.[15]
2010s
PoliNation 2010, a conference of micronations, was held on Dangar Island in Sydney, Australia.[17] Micronations with representatives in attendance included the Empire of Atlantium, the Principality of Hutt River, the Principality of Wy and the Gay and Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands.[18][19] The conference hosted various presentations, workshops and events. Parts of the conference was filmed by filmmaker Paul Poet for his upcoming documentary film, Empire Me: New Worlds Are Happening!. The conference convenors were Dr. Judy Lattas of Macquarie University, Princess Paula of the Principality of Snake Hill, and His Imperial Majesty George II of the Empire of Atlantium.[20][21][22][23]
A summit of micronationalists from the Spokane Sector took place in Washington, United States on 20 September 2011. One of the main topics of the 2011 Spokane Summit was the possibility of a currency union of the micronations of the Spokane Sector, which was passed as the UNS Tarvin. It had 3 attendees, each representing a micronation.
The 2011 Intermicronational Summit took place in London on 24 August. The 2011 Summit saw the first time in the history of the MicroWiki Community that many micronationalists met in real life. It had 14 attendees representing 13 micronations,[note 1]. all of whom were from the MicroWiki Community. The summit's priorities included evaluating and discussing the progress of micronationalism and comparing the current types of micronationalism that can be found on the internet, but also meeting for the first time after the establishment of the MicroWiki Community. The event was being planned since April 2011, when talks first started for a possible summit to finally take place, after previous failed attempts. This time led by Alexander Reinhardt and Marka Mejakhansk in the Micropolitan Lounge, on April 10, a discussion[24] was opened by Reinhardt on the MicroWiki Forum asking the community for the best period in which a possible meeting could take place. On the same day the gathering was named the "Summit '11", and London was chosen as the most appropriate place for the meeting, also because of the tourist attractions, and therefore, the possibility to visit the city for more than just the Summit itself. Many European micronationalists quickly showed interested in the event. In the end, August was chosen as the best month for organising it. Will Sörgel was the only non-European micronationalist who initially confirmed his presence, but later had to announce his unavailability to come, mainly due to the cost of transportation. Gordon Freeman as well announced there would have been a possibility of him attending, but no other information was later given. On April 14 it was decided that the Summit would have been a one-day event. The particular day, however, was still unknown. Early August was proposed, until Mejakhansk announced he would have been unable to participate. On April 29, the choice was narrowed to August 20–26, and later to Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 on May 11. By the 2nd of June, August 24 was decided as the official date due to the publishing of the results of the British GCSEs which will take place on the day after.[25][26]
The 2012 'Chairs of East Anglia' Summit took place on 14 April 2012 in the United Kingdom. It had 3 attendees, each representing a micronation. At the summit, a treaty of mutual recognition between two of the micronations being represented was signed.[27]
PoliNation 2012 held the record for the largest micronational summit by attendees from 14 July 2012 with 32,[28] until the record was beaten by MicroCon 2015 which was reported to have had 36 attendees.[29] The summit was held in London, and had 32 attendees from over 24 micronations, a large number of them being in the MicroWiki sector. Some popular micronationalists attended, including Kevin Baugh of Molossia, and one of the organisers of the event, George II, Emperor of Atlantium. The conference mainly consisted of speakers from most of the attending micronations giving presentations on their micronations and on aspects of micronationalism.[30] Several presentations of physical objects such as micronational currency and postage stamps were also set up around the hall. Micronations on which presentations were given by their founders, leaders and/or citizens included Molossia, Aerica, Atlantium, Flandrensis, the Formori Community, Francisville, Erephisia, Juclandia, Ladonia, Landashir, Monovia, Reyla, Sandus, and the USLSSR. The conference ended with a screening of Empire Me: New Worlds Are Happening, a film documenting Sealand, Hutt River, and some other less well-known micronations and autonomy movements. After the conference, photographs were taken in a larger adjoining hall and some delegations signed treaties with each other, after which most of the delegates left for a London restaurant at King's Cross for a post-conference dinner.[31][32]
The first and only to date Indonesian sector summit was the 2012 LIR Union Summit (Indonesian: Pertemuan Uni LIR 2012). It was a diplomatic conference between member states of an Indonesian union LIR Union, that took place on 10 August 2012 in Kranji, Los Bay Petros. It had 4 attendees from 3 micronations. A commission was formed inside LIR Union to arrange a summit between its members in July 2012. Los Bay Petros agreed to became the host for the meeting. It was agreed that the proposed meeting would took place in August 2012. The summit was really influential in the Indonesian sector, and proved that an Indonesian micronational summit could be held. The meeting was held in a restaurant previously reserved by Indokistan and Raflesinesia, when they two become the first to arrive in the meeting point, Los Bay Petrosian representatives later arrived quite late from the scheduled time. The meeting first discussed about the recent development each micronations have had, including further discussion held between Indokistan and Raflesinesia to establish a joint tollroad company. Coincidentally, the meeting was held during the holy Islamic month of Ramadan, which meant the meeting should be adjourned for half an hour for break-fasting and dinner. After the dinner, the meeting continued, and two treaties were signed on that moment. The LIR Union Founding Treaty specifying the basis of activity for the organisation was signed by all parties, and then continued by the process of signing of an agreement about national borders between Indokistan and Raflesinesia. The meeting was closed by Los Bay Petrosian president Adriansyah Yassin Sulaeman and before each delegated depart from the event, and a photograph session was held.
The Summit of the Three Kings took place in Anaheim, California on 12 September 2012. It had 3 attendees each representing a micronation. It was named the "Summit of the Three Kings" because all 3 of the attendees were kings of their micronations. The majority of the summit took place in and around the Disneyland theme park in Anaheim, California. The three Kings toured the park and spent most of the day riding the rides and enjoying one another's company. Discussions concerning national histories and motivations for becoming micronationalists dominated the conversations as did strategies for increasing the legitimacy of their micronations. The summit was concluded at a nearby restaurant where the three Kings were treated to a private dining room so they could continue their discussions without interruption from the general public. Once dinner was finished, they each bestowed their national awards on one another and the summit was deemed completed and the rulers returned to their dominions.[33]
The 2013 Toronto Summit was the first micronational summit that took place in Canada. However, only two people showed up.
The first micronational summit held in France was the 2013 Intermicronational Summit, which took place in Paris. It took place between 15 and 20 July, making it the longest intermicronational meeting ever held to date. It had 10 attendees from 9 micronations,[34] with two delegations representatives more than one. Emperor Jonathan I confirmed in May 2013 that he had booked an apartment for the summit, with those staying in the apartment having sent him their contributions towards its rent. Some of the activities include eating at various restaurants, spending time together having discussions and signing treaties.
The Midsummer Micronational Meeting 2014 took place on 21 June 2014 in London. It had 5 attendees from 4 micronations. Emperor Jonathan I, James von Puchow and Richard Cunningham visited the Tower of London before getting lunch, followed by a look around the British Museum. After seeing the Museum, the group returned to Mile End to meet Linden and his partner at roughly 16:00. The group had refreshments in a nearby Costa Coffee branch before heading on to Mile End Park. While at the park, in a pre-planned ceremony, von Puchow was inducted as an Austenasian subject by Jonathan I.

From there the group headed to the gardens of St John's Church, where they met with Emperor Taeglan I Nihilus of Reyla. The group spent some time in informal discussion, then delegations started departing one-by-one. At King's Cross, Turner departed, and the Emperor and Linden had refreshments at a nearby café before they both departed as well, which was the end of the summit.
The Third International Conference of Micronations, or PoliNation 2015, took place between 4–5 July 2015.[36] The summit took place in the Free Republic of Alcatraz in Italy,[37] and had attendees from 14 micronations.[38] It was also attended by various scientists and journalists.[39] Various discussions took place, and there was a proposal for creating a trading union. A treaty called Alcatraz's Treaty[40] devoted to the protection of the environment by limiting micronation's CO2 emissions, in order to slow down or reverse climate change, was signed by a large number of nations.[41][42] It was the first micronational summit to be held in Italy.[43][44] The summit had 18 attendees, including the press.
The 2016 Micronational Summit of São Paulo took place in São Paulo, Brazil on 25 June 2016, at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo. It had attendees from 4 micronations. Karnia-Ruthenia and the Holy Kingdom of Pampas signed the Treaty of Lichtenberg, a document created to strengthen the friendship between Lusophone micronationalists and to establish as a common conduct to signatories the use of cordiality and diplomacy to resolve disputes and promote micronationalism in the Lusophone sector, especially in Brazil.[45] This was the first summit ever to take place in Brazil.

The summit had 4 attendees, each representing a micronation. The goal was to promote the practice of micronationalism and bring together the leaders of already established micronations. The summit was attended by leaders and representatives of Karnia-Ruthenia, United Provinces of Mauricia, R.U.P.A. and the Império Alemão, a simulationist and historical-modelist micronation. Despite the difference between the micronational projects that attended the summit, three historical-modelists, which are the predominant genre in the Lusophone Sector, and the realist-derivatist represented by Karnia-Ruthenia, the meeting found several points of convergence that made the summit a resounding diplomatic success between the participants. Subjects discussed between the parties dealt with diplomacy in the Lusophone sector, comparisons on micronational practices in different countries, international cooperation and citizen interchange to strengthen ties and share technologies and information, and micronational economy and market dynamics. There was also the awarding of commemorative medals by some of the participants of the summit.[47][48][49]

The summit was organized by King Timothy of Shiloh as part of the 10th anniversary celebration of the Kingdom of Shiloh's independence.[57] It had 7 attendees from 3 micronations. It was the first summit to take place on international waters, and in Mexico.[58] On the second day of the cruise, the attendees of the summit dressed in their official uniforms and finery for the 6:00pm dinner where Grand Duke Travis gave a champagne toast to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the Kingdom of Shiloh. Immediately following dinner, the Heads of State departed for a meeting with the captain of the vessel, Giuseppe Strano, who took a moment from his busy schedule to receive the visiting leaders. While waiting for the captain to arrive, several of the ship's passengers stopped to pose for pictures with the foreign rulers, with many of them wrongly asking King Timothy if he was the captain of the ship. On the final day of the cruise, while the consorts played bingo and enjoyed a pampering spa experience, Grand Duke Travis and King Timothy spent several hours in a quiet corner of the ship discussing future plans for their micronations and how their two governments might best work together to accomplish challenging tasks. Afterward, the Grand Duke and Prince-Consort joined President Kevin Baugh and First Lady Adrianne Baugh in a hot tub at the aft end of the ship. While soaking in the relaxing waters, the Grand Duke revealed his five-year plan for Westarctica and sought advice from his fellow micronationalists. As the day wound to a close, the leaders and their companions enjoyed refreshing beverages while observing a karaoke contest and comedy show.[59]
2019 has had four summits so far, making it the most of any year yet. Podskalský Congress held by Venedia was the first micronational summit to happen in the Czech Republic, and took place on 23 March 2019. It had 8 attendees from 4 micronations.[60]
The 2019 GUM Birmingham Summit was hosted by the Grand Unified Micronational, however non-member states were also allowed to attend.[61] The summit took place on 28 June 2019 in Birmingham, England, in the Guild Council Chamber at the University of Birmingham,[62][63] and was organised by Emperor Adam I of Adammia, who was Chair of the Grand Unified Micronational at the time. The summit had 12 attendees from 6 micronations.[64][note 2] The summit saw presentations by attendees, as well as open discussions on law enforcement, international organisations, and economics.[65] The summit was also used as an occasion for the signing of the Edgbaston Convention, a treaty aiming to ensure higher standards of accuracy in regards to the sometimes vague or frivolous claims made in the community of small nations.[66] A Gradonian-Austenasian Treaty of Mutual recognition was also signed. The summit ended with the playing of national anthems. It is planned that a similar summit may take place next year.[67][68]
After the successful Podskalský Congress and the GUM Birmingham Summit, the support for another meeting of micronations in the Czech sector started to rise. Originally from the initiative of Snowy Plains, Gymnasium State and Mercia-Lurk, a summit was decided to be held in Sušice and hosted by the Gymnasium State. The Summit of Czech and Slovakian Micronations 2019 took place on 28 September 2019. It had 4 attendees from 4 micronations, with 1 of the attendees representing 2 micronations. Mr Čech had to leave soon into the discussion, leaving only the three delegates. The Gymnasium State encouraged the other participants to consider signing the Wrythe Convention. At 3 PM, the summit officially ended, and it was stated that the Rednecks Republic was interested in hosting the next edition of the summit.[69]
2020s
The first summit to take place in 2020 is the 2020 Essexia–Millania London Summit, held at the Sanctuary House Hotel in London, United Kingdom, on 3 February 2020. It officially had three attendees, and a forth unofficial attendant — representing three micronations in total. The summit saw the two nations meet at Westminster Station in London. The trio walked around the Westminster area, discussing each other's micronations, and general affairs. The trio then visited the hotel the Millanian delegation was staying in, and had a brief conversation in the lobby. The main summit occurred at the Sanctuary House Hotel, where a Treaty of Closer Cooperation was signed, stipulating closer ties between the Essexia and Millania, both economically and socially. The trio enjoyed a meal, courtesy of the Millanian delegation, and spoke for around 3 hours about a variety of topics including the Grand Unified Micronational, the recent micronational trolls, the Hong Kong riots, and the depravity of the British county of Essex. On February 20 2021, the states of Cycoldia, Zenrax and Dracul met in Houston, Texas and engaged in the 2021 Tri Nations Summit. It marked the first intermicronational summit of 2021 and ended in the signing of the Napocatania Concession Declaration. Furthermore, it would be the Zenraxian leader Shiro's final micronational summit before stepping back from intermicronational affairs.
Planning
A number of summits have a website or forum where you can register to attend, summits that do not have websites where you can register have been planed through social medias such as Skype or Discord.
Timing and duration
Most micronational summits take place over only one day, typically in June or July and in the weekend. Most summits typically last between 12 am and 7 pm.
Factors for this include:
- Some micronationalists would have to take a vacation from work or study to attend an event held during the work week.
- Transportation costs are often lower for weekend travellers.[70]
- For events reserving a restaurant or a room, prices may be cheaper in some places during the weekend.

Other meetings
August 2012 British Museum meeting
On 31 August 2012, Crown Prince Jonathan of Austenasia met with James von Puchow of Landashir at King's Cross station, joined there by Rebecca "Artz" Panks of the St. Peters Republic, Håkon Lindström of Zealandia, and Alex Whitmarsh of the Lewisham Democratic Republic. Despite the Empire not having formal diplomatic relations at the time with any of these nations apart from Landashir (Zealandia eventually being recognised in 2014), the event was used as an occasion to strengthen Austenasia's informal ties with various members of the MicroWiki Community. The group walked to the British Museum and spent the afternoon looking at the thousands of artifacts and exhibitions before leaving and walking to Trafalgar Square. Photographs were taken with Angus Diplomabear (who was then under the guardianship of the Crown Prince and would be handed over to Lindström at a brief informal meeting at Morden the next day) by several landmarks before the group departed.
2014 Indokistani State Leaders Meeting
The 2014 Indokistani State Leaders Meeting was a special session of the National Forum of Indokistan which took place on 1 July 2014, in Indokistani capital Suwarnakarta. The meeting was notable because it was the first and the only time that all of Indokistani state leaders meet physically. The meeting has 3 attendees. The meeting started in 9:00 AM (UTC +7), beginning with Suwarnakarta city sightseeing and a visit to the exhibition on the National Archives building. During the visit, attendees presented with various historical artifacts, including the first-sewn national flag and a time capsule installed there. After the sightseeing, attendees were directed to the meeting room inside Suwarnakarta Governor Office, the designated place for the meeting. The meeting started at 11:30 AM, and was set to informal in nature, so attendees could freely express their thoughts and ideas. Aziz Pahlevi then joined the meeting through online media. The meeting ended in the afternoon and a photograph session was done afterwards.
Exhibits
From 7 November through 17 December 2004, the Reg Vardy Gallery at the University of Sunderland (UK) hosted an exhibition on the subject of micronational group identity and symbolism. The exhibition focused on numismatic, philatelic and vexillological artifacts, as well as other symbols and instruments created and used by a number of micronations from the 1950s through to the present day. A summit of micronations conducted as part of this exhibition was attended by representatives of Sealand, Elgaland-Vargaland, New Utopia, Atlantium, Frestonia and Fusa.[154] The exhibition was reprised at the Andrew Kreps Gallery in New York City from 24 June – 29 July of the following year and organized by R. Blackson and Peter Coffin. Peter Coffin organized a more extensive exhibition about micronations at Paris' Palais de Tokyo in early 2007 called ÉTATS (faites-le vous-même)/States (Do it yourself).[citation needed]
Sporting events
Although not diplomatic summits, informal gatherings of micronationalists for sporting related events are being planned and have occurred. 4 out of the 10 Sports MicroGames tournaments have been physical, Ünie 2004, Communist Dictatorship of Botswana 2006, Ünie 2008 and Land van de Hemel 2017.
The MOF 2020 Micronational Olympic Games were supposed to take place in Iustus sometime during the summer of 2020, however the games were cancelled due to the COVID pandemic.[155]
The Micronational Olympics 2021 were set to take place in North Carolina and were to be hosted by Thebes.[156] Sign-up for the event is available on Thebes' official website.[157] Molossia claimed they may be able to attend. However, it is unknown if such games every took place.
The MOF hosted an event at the MicroCon 2022.
