The Republic of Ultamiya (/ɔːl'teɪmiə/ awl-TAY-mee-ə) was a micronation located in Pennsylvania. Founded on 27 March 2010, it came to encompass an area 70,536 square feet (6553 m²) and at its end had 11 territorial citizens. Its primary and official language was English. The name Ultamiya derives from the word ultima, the Latin word for "last", though today mainly a gaming term, and was also the name of Ultamiya's capital. Ultamiya is considered the mother nation of the Ultamian Sector, which at its height contained five nations. Out of those, three were recognized as Ultamiya's successor states, although the Sector would not remain in existence past 2014.

Ultamiya, at its dissolution, was composed of five Districts, governed by their respective residents, with one designated a Military District, governed by the nation's military. The general Ultamian "core", its home territory, however, is considered to be the three districts, Varina, which was known as the Capital District, Shimate, and Fort Manhalia Military District.

History

Ultamiya was directly inspired by the Republic of Molossia, particularly a series of videos watched by the President the day prior to formation. At 8:16 A.M. on 27 March 2010, it was formally founded.

David's first act as President was getting Ultamiya its own website. He found success with the people at the Arcade Trainer Forum, which he had moderated since 22 February. While the website was being built, the President was busy cleaning the Capital District of litter. On 1 April, he unofficially founded an Air and Space Ministry and conducted its first test.

Stravasite-Ultamian War

On 2 April, a comment was left on the main website declaring war against Ultamiya, sparking numerous military developments. The only battle occured on 3 April, when a toddler, reportedly from Stravasalter, unsuccessfully assaulted the President at a structure down the street from the capital called Fort Manhalia. Though he succeeded in fending off the toddler, Ultamiya's attention was focused on the war situation for the next fortnight. Convinced Stravasalter was long gone, he declared victory for Ultamiya on 14 April.

Postwar and summer expansion

Ultamiya was now free to work on its other affairs. One of the first developments of this period was a national currency, the Katane. Originally issued on 22 April 2010 in three coin denominations (1, 5, 10), it would expand over the next two months to include four bills (20, 50, 100, 500) and would eventually receive a three-denomination subunit (the Taneda, t10, t25, t50) in January 2011 and an eighth 1000 denomination the next year.

One problem with early Ultamiya was the lack of an official constitution; the only laws (which had been in effect since Ultamiya's founding) were five rules which were placed inside the Declaration of Independence, which disappeared in a hard-drive crash in mid-April. David thought it was about time to organize the law system and created The Constitution after arriving from Washington after midnight, on 16 May, with three articles, I (General Laws, the five rules), II (Executive powers) and III (Amending).

On 17 May, Ultamiya got its first ally and friend, the Slinky Empyre. This one affair would open up the gate for Ultamiya to expand and become a communicative micronation. Over the following month, and beyond, Ultamiya would begin to conduct diplomacy and expand beyond its 27 March borders. At the end of the Postwar Era, the population was 29. By the end of the summer, that number would swell to over 50.

During this time, there was only one break to the peace. On 11 June 2010, a group of 7th graders, responding to the President's talk of Ultamiya, formed a micronation called Gingertown and reportedly vandalized one of Ultamiya's pages on MicroWiki. Though banned for those acts, they then issued insults to the President and threatened cyber warfare. Though the President declared war on 12 June, nothing happened out of the incident, and by September Gingertown was defunct.

It was soon found that Ultamiya was not only growing population-wise. On 20 June 2010, a visit by the President to a relative's house down the street would change Ultamiya forever. He discovered that the yard behind the house (and its neighboring yard) had apple and mulberry trees, neither of which the Capital District could grow. He quickly organized these two yards into the dual protectorate of Shimate (/ɕi'mate/), today's smallest of the three districts. Being a dual protectorate, the area would be defended by both Ultamiya and their mother country, the United States.

About a month and a half later, on 4 August, he had given much thought over what to do with Shimate and Fort Manhalia, and finally decided it was time to take them for Ultamiya. He organized Fort Manhalia Military District, and made Shimate official territory. This over tripled Ultamiya's size, and was its first major expansion.

Post-summer

Ultamiya's expansionist fever slowed down tremendously after the 2010-2011 school year came into being. The population became solid, no more districts formed, and Ultamians settled in to better themselves and the domestic Ultamian life and policy.

On 4 September, David sent a private message to over ten citizens of Ultamiya on the Arcade Trainer Forum, with an idea for founding a legislative system. They passed the idea overwhelmingly. After selecting a Governing Host, Matiyo Kataniya, the President proceeded to add an entire article to the Constitution on the legislature. It was active for two and a half months before the President suspended it on 18 November for inactivity.

Ultamiya's first involvement in a foreign war was with the Atlantis Civil War, declaring war on the Socialist Federation of Makhnovist on 14 September. Though that war was short, the longer Pacific Front brought about a second enemy, the Tyler Revolutionary Forces, on which Ultamiya declared war on the 21st. In either, there was no true military involvement by Ultamiya, though there was no true way that could have been possible either. About a month later, Ultamiya joined the Fraternal War by declaring war on the KMITB Nation, though nothing much occurred out of the conflict.

The Richland and Pimpville Affairs

On 25 June 2010, the People's Republic of Richland became Ultamiya's friend, and through the next few months the two nations' leaders exchanged many emails and were good friends with each other. On 9 October, Richland President Richard Vincent sent an email to David suggesting the two nations form a commonwealth. David interpreted this to mean he wanted to annex Ultamiya, and harshly declined. Vincent accused President David of defaming Richland on MicroWiki and on Ultamiya News, and called his Council into a special meeting. On 6 November, his country declared war. Ultamiya revoked diplomacy with Richland on 13 November, and would not restore it for nearly another four months.

The Republic of Pimpville was a nation founded on 20 October, by President Sheiniyo Frarei and Vice President Androva Shobaiyo. They promptly declared war on Ultamiya in one of the President's classes. For about two weeks, both countries spread propaganda and threats concerning the hostility, but no real conflict ensued. Ultamiya recalled its recognition of a state of war on 3 November in a ceremonial gesture of peace, but it ultimately had no effect. A peace treaty given to the Pimpville leaders on 6 December failed, but was eventually signed on 14 February 2011.

Early 2011

Although involved in two cold wars, Ultamiya headed into 2011 with a revived spirit of confidence and strength.

On 16 January 2011, the Slinky Empyre government was overthrown by four departments, led by Parker I, to establish a commonwealth. Amidst rumors that the Empyre was at an end, the departments seceded to form the Slinky Republic. The 22nd brought a prompt declaration of war from the Kingdom of Istoria; the Duchy of Georgeton declared war on Istoria on the 24th, which was in turn declared war on by Ultamiya; then Richland (redundantly) and the United Kingdom of Carlington declared war on Ultamiya. Most of the nations involved revoked their declarations very quickly, Ultamiya being one of the last to do so, on the morning of 27 January. The Ultamian government never withdrew their recognition of the Slinky Empyre, but did revoke diplomatic ties pending a final result.

March–July 2011 is regarded as Ultamiya's golden age, and great change occurred to Ultamiya. The first was a switch of national anthems from Ultamiya, The Greatest Land to Long Live Ultamiya, written to the melody of God Save the Tsar, by the President. Also, long time enemy Richland restored diplomatic relations with the country on 9 March, meaning Ultamiya had no enemies for the first time since 14 September.

Finally, two days before National Day, the Constitution was scrapped due to a failed reform and lack of use. However, the Constitution made a fast and unexpected comeback in May, when David wrote a third version on the 14th. The sixth citizen needed to ratify it did so on 16 May, exactly one year after the first constitution was put into operation.

April and May otherwise saw plenty of action, mostly online. On 3 April, a corporation called Ultamiya Fishery was founded on the MMORPG Runescape, but went inactive about two weeks later due to dropping prices.

May, summer, and the War with Hikiya

May was also active, and aside from the Constitution a few things occurred, most notably two Ultamian victories over the Hikiya Insurgency at Fort Manhalia, in the First Battle of the Field on 16 May and Second Field on 20 May.

Like the previous year, the summer of 2011 experienced a substantial drop in activity except in two places, the foreign affairs department and, starting on 16 June, the District of Minaka, Ultamiya's Minecraft claim which had four active cities before the server was switched out in August. In foreign affairs, the Ultamian Katane was briefly adopted by the Republic of Serius (later the Sakasarian Federation) in the beginning of June, after the 2011 Katane Regulation Act was signed, designed to set basic guidelines for foreign use of the Katane.

Meanwhile, the airsoft issue was finally resolved with the M555AF, a government-owned airsoft gun that was commissioned in mid-July. Though not nearly as powerful as some owned by other members of the newly-christened Ultamian Army of the Republic, it was a groundbreaking weapon nonetheless. The stage was now set for the uncontested domination by Ultamiya of Fort Manhalia and the surrounding areas. The gun later broke on 1 October, however by the end of the year it was replaced.

On 10 September 2011, a ceasefire was signed with the Hikiya Insurgency, ending open conflict with that organization until after Ultamiya's dissolution.

Autumn and 2012

Autumn 2011 was a generally inactive time concerning domestic affairs, but, once again, activity in the diplomatic and forum fields overrode this handicap. Also, Ultamiya soon obtained a replacement Minecraft claim in the Miyakato Islands on a new Wyvernian server. A final claim arrived on the World Wide Wyvern server which was switched out on 16 December 2011. By late December, Ultamiya News had reactivated somewhat.

Following a surge of diplomatic openings, 2012 began peacefully. However, January was not all rosy. On 16 January 2012, for the first of two times, one of Ultamiya's partners, the Kingdom of Juclandia, cut relations with Ultamiya. A few days later, The President departed from the MicroWiki Forums as a part of a program he introduced on 7 February 2012, called "Return to the Roots". The program called for a higher focus on domestic affairs and less on foreign matters. This caused Ultamiya's influence to drop significantly, though the February survey still ranked Ultamiya at #25 for the whole sector. However, David returned to the forum a few days before National Day, brought on a second fabric flag, and restarted diplomatic activities.

The Roots program brought on the passing of the 2012 Air Force Act of February 21, which established an air force, which was modified on 6 April with the 2012 Army Ranks and Management Act, which removed the provision calling for one hundred planes to be built. It also filled out the enlistment ranks for the regular UAR.

Spring 2012

By Spring, RttR was about dead; as it turned out, an outward social policy on the MicroWiki Forum prevailed.

A second Minaka-dominated period began at the beginning of April with the construction of Avolia City, which was halted about two weeks later due to low attendance of other servergoers.

In May, Ultamiya applied and was accepted into the Grand Unified Micronational, and ended the month with the acquisition of a fourth district, Michrenia, on the 30th.

June began with the foundation of a sixth city for the District of Minaka, and the dissolution of the Coloradoan Pan River Territory.

Summer and fall 2012

The summer of 2012 was largely focused on more Minecraft projects, particularly the cities of New Sakura and Nosabaku, before the former was attacked by thieves on 31 July. In August, two new plans were underway: Operation Gold, the third educational project, which was completed on 18 August, and the Closer Together project, revealed at the beginning of the month.

In foreign affairs, Ultamiya became a full member of the Grand Unified Micronational and during the elections of September 2012 became a member on the Advancement Council. However, the national news service Ultamiya News made a negative impression on MicroWiki with radical articles against such figures as Jacob Tierney, Cedric Dyer, and Crown Prince Jonathan of Austenasia.

The major concern of the months of August and September was the Closer Together Project, in which Fort Manhalia's activity was ramped up, and fabric flags were posted to Shimate and Michrenia. The largest project ever undertaken by Ultamiya, it was completed on 7 October with the hanging of the flag at Michrenia in the cold afternoon rain.

Throughout the fourth quarter of 2012, Ultamiya retired somewhat from foreign affairs and became slightly inactive. The Ultamiya Mining Company opened two mines and enjoyed a brief active mining period, which faded out by the end of November. On 17 December Vice President Matova Fasyika retired and was replaced the next day by Michrenian Viceroy Mikaila.

2013

As 2012 drew to a close, Ultamiya experienced a period of inactivity as an emotional 21 December brought about the removal of the Sisters in Sainthood as well as Ultamiya's withdrawal from the GUM. Following a decidedly uneventful month, the Ultamiya News website was forced to relocate after a warning of deactivation was given to the government. The official move was made on 18 January with the signing of the 2013 Online Citizen Act, reducing the country's population to just 10 territorial citizens.

Following the switch, Ultamiya acquired its final district, Gogania as well as Fort Treetania, a military outpost. The Series 2013 Katane also debuted (though no Taneda denominations were ever updated). It was by this time, however, that the realizations of the declination of Ultamiya's spirit were made apparent. After reviewing the situation, David decided on 15 March to dissolve the nation. Ultamiya finally collapsed on 27 March, exactly three years after it began. Michrenia and Gogania carried on as independent states, and David, after four days of inactivity, founded the Kingdom of Varina.

Government

Ultamiya was officially a presidential republic, though in practice it functioned like a monarchy.

President

Ultamiya's executive department was structured much like that of the Republic of Molossia, with one president and no elections.

The office would change hands only if the current president died or resigned, and then the Vice President would succeed to the Presidency. According to the old Constitution, an election amongst all citizens of the Republic was to be called for, however this was nigh impossible as Ultamiya granted citizenship over the Internet. Appointing of a Vice President by the President was compulsory.

Ministries

Ministries were various fields of government that were created when necessary. Apart from being a ceremonial title, the ministries did very little, with the President maintaining day-to-day control over state affairs. Some ministries were considered under 'Executive Control', which meant that they were managed by the President himself. The seven ministries that were adopted were:

Ministry Established Executive Control
Ministry of the Republic of Ultamiya[1] 27 March 2010 Yes
Ministry of Weather 27 March 2010 Yes
Ministry of Air and Space[2] 1 April 2010 Yes
Ministry of Finance ~April 2010 No
Ministry of Foreign Affairs 24 May 2010 No
Ministry of War ~October 2010 No
Ministry of Assistance 29 May 2011 No

Districts

Ultamiya, at its height, had five districts.

Capital District

The Capital District was, as expected, the capital of Ultamiya, otherwise known as Ultima. Founded on 27 March along with the nation, it encompassed a small area including the Government House, and also formed the capital of Varina for a short time.

Shimate

Shimate was the second district and was founded on 20 June 2010. Known for its agricultural output, Shimate enjoyed a quiet existence. In 2013, it became jointly governed by Varina and Michrenia for the brief period those nations were active.

Fort Manhalia Military District

Fort Manhalia Military District was a small playground that comprised a fair bit of Ultamian territory, about 28,000 square feet (2600 m2). The main structure, Fort Manhalia, was composed of several slides and points of access. Of the four battles that occurred at Fort Manhalia, three occurred under Ultamiya's watch. During their respective wars with Ultamiya, Pimpville and Richland also expressed interest in seizing the property, but never did so. Similarly to Shimate, it fell under joint ownership in 2013.

Michrenia

Michrenia was founded on 30 May 2012. It was the first district or territory to undergo an official application, via a form. It was the second-smallest district, after Shimate, but was on a much higher elevation than the other three. Michrenia was the only district to have two viceroys, as the first became the Ultamian Vice President. After Ultamiya's dissolution, Michrenia was the capital of the Kingdom of the same name in 2013.

Gogania

Gogania was a classroom governed by Viceroy (then Emperor) Gariya I. It was the smallest district by far before it became independent, though it encompassed a large population of both visitors and citizens.

Coloradoan Pan River Territory

The only territory ever under Ultamiya's indirect jurisdiction, the CPRT (also known as, simply, the Coloradoan Territory) was declared by a website member by the name of Lokiya Lakosta. The so-called ranch that was claimed extended for 40 acres, and had a population of 9. It was called the CPRT because the Frying Pan River runs through it. With the acquisition of Michrenia on 30 May 2012, the CPRT was returned to the United States two days later.

Demographics

Ultamiya's population derived mostly from website members and territory claimants, so during the heyday of expansion Ultamians were scattered around the United States and places in Europe. All active Ultamians spoke English, but some had the ability to speak a European language or two. Education was unaffected by Ultamiya's independence, and it was notable for being the source of multiple conflicts.

Economy

The Ultamian economy was based around two industries, Agriculture and Mining. Agriculture was the nation's largest industry, with annual harvests in every outside district besides Fort Manhalia Military District, which has no inhabitants. The mining industry was a monopoly, the only corporation in the field being the Ultamiya Mining Company, which was based in the Capital District. Sandstone was the primary product of mining operations, though sizable amounts of other materials were discovered. After Ultamiya's dissolution, the UMC continued on as the Backyard Mining Corporation.

Military

Ultamiya's military, though small, was quite developed with three active personnel and a staple of active weaponry, most of it Nerf. The President of the Republic was Commander-in-Chief, much like that of the United States. There were two branches of the UAR, the Army and the Aerial Forces.

Ultamiya never lost a battle though it never experienced any real micronational warfare.

Airsoft

One of the most divided issues in Ultamiya's history, especially in Ultima, was the question on whether to supply the military with Airsoft weaponry. Lieutenant General Mikaila was, until the summer of 2011, the only person in the military that had Airsoft. Since then, both Michrenia and the Capital District have developed Airsoft. The most active citizen against the incorporation of Airsoft was the President's Domestic Adviser, who had enough clout to sway popular opinion against it, even though the President stood firm in his belief that Airsoft was necessary to fully defend the country. The argument seemed to have ended when the M555AF became a member of the federal arsenal on 16 July 2011, and by the end of the year the Government House had its first powerful Airsoft weaponry.

The District of Michrenia, the economy of which relied a lot on military technology, had at least eight Airsoft pieces in its stores, so at its independence it was already starting off with a powerful military.

Science and technology

Ultamiya never had any major ministries concerning scientific programs in either the development of warfare or peaceful projects. However, it did some testing with Nerf weaponry and also had a Ministry of Weather (which used Weatherbug). It had, at one point, considered founding a Navy and an Air and Space program, but the lack of riverside territory and space prohibited either of these from happening. The President stated that if rocket testing "like that of Molossia" were to happen, it would probably take place inside the Capital District.

The Stravasite-Ultamian War prompted many explorations into weapon technology; for example, an Egg Greande was produced, carrying marbles inside plastic eggs, but the eggs cracked when used multiple times.

Another notable weapon produced because of this was a musket-like fabrication, consisting of a stick of wood attached to a Dual-Shot dartgun. Though the use of this weapon for a musket had existed since February, the bayonet was made for the first time during the war.

Lobbying for funding the Ultamian Space Program did occur during March 2011, but the proposal was struck down on the grounds that there was no official space to shoot them off at.

The next touch on scientific research came with the 2012 Air Force Act, which established a Vice Marshal as second in line in the Aerial Forces. The Vice Marshal would be responsible for "any scientific and aerodynamic research", and the President had authority over these duties.

Perhaps the most-used program in Ultamiya was Google Earth, which was used to measure district boundaries and give insight into what lied within potential territories.

Foreign affairs

Ultamiya's diplomatic relations was its most active department. Generally upholding ties from between 60-75 different nations, Ultamiya was successful in devoting itself to the micronational community. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which was founded on 24 May, was supposed to operate in checking talk pages and monitoring activity of other micronations, but in reality it never did much. The MoFA was the only ministry with two leaders, Bleira Davisiya (who resigned on 18 May 2011) and Viliamo Vodiya, who continued with it until Ultamiya's dissolution.

Skype was the most common program used to talk to other micronations. As it was also used as the base for discussion in the Grand Unified Micronational, Skype was very important to Ultamiya. It was also the method by which Minecraft became a significant part of Ultamiya's culture.
