The State of Sabotage (SoS) was an art project, music label and micronation, established on 30 August 2003, and disestablished on 30 August 2013 on the project's 10 year anniversary by Czech artist Robert Jelinek. The State of Sabotage claimed an unpopulated island, Harakka in Finland. According to their website, State diplomacy is conducted through artistic sovereignty and trans-nationality.

Etymology

The word “sabotage” comes from the French word “sabot” and means “to trample with wooden shoes.” A sabot is a clog with a leather top. At the beginning of agricultural mechanization, French farmworkers threw their “sabotes” into harvesting and processing machines (which were taking their jobs), thereby blocking the complicated mechanics of the mowing and threshing machines and rendering them useless. For the sake of their labour, they engaged in “sabotage.”

History

The formation "Sabotage" was founded by artist Robert Jelinek in June 1992.[1] On August 30th 2003, SoS was established on the unpopulated Harakka Island, Finland. The State of Sabotage declared the 30th of August its State holiday, which was celebrated annually.

On September 4, 2005, The SoS State Constitution was publicly recited and resolved.

On August 30, 2013, the State of Sabotage was disestablished. A memorial was constructed. Whoever finds it will be the sole heir of the entire SoS state.[2]
