Bhargab Jyoti Medhi, Sri Nawab Deeptansh is a Vishwamitran politician who currently serves as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting and Minister of Diversity and Integration in the fourth Klarissa Sriraya ministry since 15 June 2024. He had previously held various other positions including serving as the Governor of Kamrupa, Governor of Basistha, Mayor of Dadara and various other ministerial positions with cabinet rank and state rank.
Micronational career
Early political career
Bhargab Jyoti Medhi joined micronationalism at the persuade of his classmates- Varuna Sriraya and Bishnu Chetry in July 2015 and attained citizenship in then Children's Group. He began his political career in December 2015 after being elected as a member of the Lok Sabha.
Ministerial career (2015–2017)
Medhi was inducted in the council of ministers of Prime Minister Klarissa Sriraya as Minister of State for Child Welfare on 6 December 2015. He joined the Friends Society Secular Party ahead of the general election of April 2016 and was re-elected to the Lok Sabha and became a part of the council of ministers of Prime Minister Varuna Sriraya on 11 April 2016. He was re-appointed as the Minister of State in the Ministry of Social and Child Welfare.
In July the same year, in a cabinet reshuffle, he was appointed as the Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance and Salaries and got the additional charge of the Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs in October the same year. He was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in December 2016.
Upon his re-election to the Lok Sabha, he was re-inducted to the union council of ministers and was appointed as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Information and Broadcasting and the Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs and Regional Affairs in the Fourth Varuna Sriraya ministry. He was promoted as a minister of state with independent charge which was considered as an reward of his continuous dedication and handwork. As the Minister of I&B, he was instrumental in pioneering the creation the official WhatsApp group and platform for communication between the citizens.
In a cabinet reshuffle in February 2017, he was appointed as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Planning and Group Development after having swapped portfolios with Asmi Patranabis who was appointed as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting. He was also given the additional charge of the Minister of State for Finance and Salaries after incumbent minister of state Anirban Phatowali was promoted to cabinet rank. He was one of the ministers who along with Prime Minister Varuna Sriraya joined the Friends Society Independent Party in February.
In April 2017, then Prime Minister Varuna Sriraya resigned after being chosen to be the President. He was succeeded as the prime minister by Independent Party President Klarissa Sriraya on 12 April 2017. Bhargab Jyoti Medhi was promoted as a cabinet rank minister in her cabinet and held the portfolios of Minister of Law and Justice, Group Members Development, and Sanitation and Cleanliness Campaign.
He was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in July 2017 and became a part of the unity government of Tanishkaa Patranabish. He was appointed as the Minister of Law and Justice, and Sanitation and Hygiene. On 23 July, Anoushkaa Patranabish, who was a minister in the ministry, resigned after being elected the Vice President. Medhi was briefly assigned the additional portfolio of the Minister of Cabinet Affairs. He continued to serve as a minister until being dropped from the ministry ahead of a reshuffle on 6 September 2017.
Governorship
First term (2017)
A week after being dropped from the union cabinet, he was appointed as the Governor of Uttar Guwahati on 17 September 2017 succeeding Rajdeep Deka who held the additional charge of the Governor of Uttar Guwahati since the resignation of incumbent governor Kalyan Dey on 6 September 2017. Medhi continued to serve as the governor until being re-invited to join the council of ministers in December 2017. He resigned as the governor on 25 December 2017 hours before being inducted to the union cabinet.
Second term (2019–2020)
After resigning from the union council of ministers on 1 September, Medhi was re-appointed as the Governor of Uttaranchal on a second occasion on 4 September 2019. He continued to serve as the state's governor until being transferred and appointed as the Governor of Beltola for the remainder of his tenure on 4 October 2019. Prior to being permanently appointed as the Governor of Beltola, he held the additional charge of the state's governor from 29 September 2019 following the resignation of incumbent governor Abhiraj Kar who had resigned to be a part of the union council of ministers. As the Governor of Beltola, he was a part of the gubernatorial committee formed by President Varuna Sriraya after the Supreme Court's historic verdict disqualifying the chief ministers of the states as sitting members of parliament. The committee was presided over the Governor of Purvanchal Rajdeep Deka.
In a series of changes to the territorial machinery, the states of Purvanchal, Beltola, Uttaranchal and Madhya Prant were declared as dominions under the commonwealth, each headed by a presidential representative titled the "Governor-General". Accordingly, Medhi was transferred and appointed as the inaugural Governor-General of Purvanchal on 2 February 2020 and he continued to serve on the position until 13 May 2020 when the dominion-hood was abolished and statehood was conferred back on Purvanchal and the other states.
Later ministerial career (2017–2019, 2020–2021)
Medhi resigned as the Governor of Uttar Guwahati on 25 December 2017 in order to join the union council of ministers. He was sworn-in as a cabinet minister and assigned the portfolio of the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs in the union cabinet. During the general election in March 2018, he was re-elected to the parliament but failed to be appointed as a minister.
In the post-coup cabinet of Tanishkaa Patranabish, Medhi was appointed as the Minister of Human Resource Development and Regional and State Affairs on 14 May 2018 and served on the positions till 12 October 2018. He was appointed to the council of ministers on 7 January 2019 as the Minister of Minority Affairs, Art and Literature and served till the cabinet reshuffle on 28 February 2019. In the cabinet reshuffle held on 28 January 2019, he was appointed as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, and Sports and Youth Affairs.
He was re-elected to the Lok Sabha during the 2019 general election and was appointed to the council of ministers under prime minister Tanishkaa Patranabish on 17 March 2019. He was appointed as the Minister of Human Resource Development, and Sports and Youth Affairs and held the positions till the cabinet reshuffle on 3 June 2019. In a short cabinet reshuffle held on 3 June 2019, he was appointed as the Minister of Culture replacing Anirban Phatowali who was dropped from the cabinet. He was appointed as the Minister of Cabinet Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs on 16 July 2019 and served till August 2019 when he was appointed as the Minister of Law and Justice with additional charge of Human Resource Development. His last assignment in the council of ministers prior to being appointed a governor was as the Minister of Public Administration which he served from 17 August till 2 September 2019. He resigned from the cabinet on 2 September 2019 and assumed the charge of the Governor of Uttaranchal two days later on 4 September.
After serving as the governor of three states between September 2019 and May 2020, he re-joined the union council of ministers on 13 May 2020 as the Minister of Law and Justice and Health. He also served as a minister in the Second Anoushkaa Patranabish ministry from June 2020 till January 2021. He was appointed as the Minister of International Relations and Minister of Information and Broadcasting under prime minister Princess Anoushkaa on 8 June 2020. In a cabinet rejig on 17 June 2020, he was appointed as the Coordinating Minister of Linguistic and Community Development with additional charge as Minister of Public Health. He served on these positions till 28 January 2021.
Mayor of Dadara (2023–)
After being on a political semi-retirement for more than two years, he returned to politics and governance after being appointed as the Mayor of Dadara on 29 March 2023 by the Rajpramukh of Kamrupa to succeed Reshmi Hazarika who was appointed as the Governor of Uttaranchal on 17 March.
Governorship (2023–)
In a surprising move, Prince Abhiraj, then Governor of Beltola resigned from office on 28 May 2023 and the same was accepted by His Illustrious and Royal Majesty the Rashtradhyaksh. As a consequence to his resignation, the Governor of Basistha Tanvi Sridasa was transferred and appointed as the Governor of Beltola for the remainder of her tenure. While, in order to fill the vacancy caused by the transfer of Tanvi Sridasa to Beltola, Bhargab Jyoti Medhi was appointed as the Governor of Basistha on 28 May 2023 and he has been serving in office since then.
