The Ministry of Cabinet Affairs (Hindi: कैबिनेट कार्य मंत्रालय) was a ministry in the government of Vishwamitra which was responsible for handling affairs of the union cabinet and the council of ministers. The ministry also carried out the functions through the Prime Minister's Office. The main role of the ministry was to provide support to the Prime Minister, the Cabinet and other ministries.
The ministry was established for the first time on 10 July 2016 by then prime minister Varuna Sriraya as a new ministry of the government and it continued to be one of the most important portfolios of the government until its dissolution in 2019 with the further creation of the Ministry of Intergovernmental Affairs, which too was dissolved in the next few months. The ministry was re-created on 10 July 2021, five years from its initial creation in 2016.
The Ministry of Cabinet Affairs was headed by the Minister of Cabinet Affairs who was a cabinet rank minister and was occassionally assisted by a junior minister or the Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs.
The Ministry of Cabinet Affairs was abolished in 2019 and was replaced by the Ministry of Intergovernmental Affairs, which too ceased to exist by March 2020. The ministry was re-created by prime minister Ștefan Marius Snagoveanu on 10 July 2021. The ministry was renamed as the Ministry of Union Cabinet Affairs in August 2023 and ceased to exist in March 2024.
History
The Ministry of Cabinet Affairs was established on 10 July 2016 under the premiership of Varuna Sriraya and served as an important portfolio of the union government. The ministry was abolished on 2 September 2019 and reformed into the Ministry of Intergovernmental Affairs, which too ceased to exist by March 2020.
The ministry was re-established on 10 July 2021 by then prime minister Ștefan Marius Snagoveanu. The ministry was briefly abolished on 17 March 2022 and re-created on 12 May 2022 by prime minister Farhaz Hazarika.
Functions and role
The main role of the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs was to handle the affairs of the union cabinet and the council of ministers. The ministry coordinated and supported the Prime Minister, the Cabinet and other ministries and coordinated with them on issues and projects assigned to it by the Prime Minister or the cabinet and followed up on the related resolutions and directives. The ministry also monitored government performance, contributes to improving the performance of the government and raised the quality of government facilities and services.
