The Ministry of Art and Literature (Hindi: कला एवं साहित्य मंत्रालय) was a ministry of the government of Friends Society (present day Vishwamitra) which was responsible for fostering and promoting creative arts and literature in the nation. The ministry was created on 21 March 2018 after separating the Department of Arts and Literature of the Ministry of Culture. The ministry remain effective until being merged back into the Ministry of Culture on 17 March 2019.
History
The Ministry of Art and Literature was established on 21 March 2018 by prime minister Varuna Sriraya in his sixth ministry after separating the Department of Arts and Literature from the Ministry of Culture. He served as the first minister-in-charge of the ministry. The ministry was viewed as less crucial and often burdensome by his predecessor Tanishkaa Patranabish and thereupon decided to merge the ministry with its parent ministry, the Ministry of Culture on 17 March 2019 after forming her fifth ministry.
Objective
The Ministry of Art and Literature was responsible for fostering and promoting the creative arts and literary endeavors within the nation. The ministry was tasked with supporting contemporary artistic expression and literary innovation, while the Ministry of Culture was tasked with overseeing the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage, traditions, and national identity.
The ministry coordinated to develop policies and initiatives that encouraged the growth of the visual arts, performing arts, literary works, and related creative fields. It also collaborated with other ministries, including the Ministry of Human Resource Development and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in promotion of arts and literature.
