The Ministry of Minority Affairs (Hindi: अल्पसंख्यक मामले मंत्रालय) was a ministry of the Government of Vishwamitra and now a department under the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Minority Welfare. The ministry came into existence for the first time on 12 October 2018 and the first minister was appointed in the Seventh Dhrubajyoti Roy ministry. The ministry was abolished on 2 September 2019 and it became a part of the Ministry of Community Development.
The ministry was re-established as the Ministry of Minority Welfare on 12 May 2022 after being separated from the Ministry of Welfare. On 11 June 2022, the Ministry of Minority Welfare and the Ministry of Religious Affairs were integrated to form the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Minority Welfare of which the two former ministries are currently a part of.
It was the apex body for the central government's regulatory and developmental programmes for the minority religious communities and minority linguistic communities in Vishwamitra, which included Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, etc. as notified as minority religious communities. The ministry had specially provided its attention towards the protection and preservation of Muslim religious affairs, etc.
Ministers
The head of the Ministry of Minority Affairs was the Minister of Minority Affairs. The position of the minister was often occupied by a representative of the minority community, primarily a Muslim. The Cabinet Minister for Minority Affairs was occasionally assisted by a Minister of State for Minority Affairs who served as the junior minister in the ministry.
The first minister of minority affairs was Mohammad Mridul Amin who was appointed on 12 October 2018. Upon the ministry's re-established in 2022, Prime Minister Farhaz Hazarika, yet another Muslim figure, served as the Minister of Minority Welfare.
