The Ministry of National Security (Hindi: राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा मंत्रालय) is a ministry in the government of Vishwamitra which is responsible for safeguarding national internal and external security. The ministry oversees the defense forces, law enforcement agencies, intelligence services, and emergency response systems. The primary functions of the ministry include maintaining public order, protecting internal and external threats, and ensuring the integrity of the nation's borders.

The ministry was created for the first time on 12 October 2018 after the erstwhile Department of Internal Security of the Ministry of Home Affairs was created as an independent ministry to be headed by a cabinet minister. Arnab Sil was appointed as the first Minister of Internal Security on 12 October 2018.

The ministry was re-created on 29 March 2024 as the Ministry of Internal Security following the dissolution of the Ministry of National Defence and thereupon renamed as the Ministry of National Security on 15 June 2024.

History

The Ministry of Internal Security was created on 12 October 2018 by then President Varuna Sriraya to deduce the powers and functions of the Ministry of Home Affairs over the subjects of internal and public security affairs. Arnab Sil was thereupon appointed as the first Minister of Internal Security.

On 16 July 2019, the ministry was renamed as the Ministry of Security, however was reverted back to its original name on 6 August 2019. The ministry was abolished on 2 September 2019 and its functions were transferred to its parent ministry.

On 16 November 2019, the ministry was re-created as the Ministry of National Security and was merged back with the Ministry of Home Affairs on 3 March 2020. The ministry was briefly re-created as the Ministry of Public Security and Special Enterprises on 17 June 2020 and placed under the charge of a minister of state and coordinated along with the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security and the Coordinating Ministry of Political, Legal and Security Affairs. The ministry was merged with the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security on 28 January 2021.

On 29 March 2024, the Ministry of Internal Security was re-created and later renamed as the Ministry of National Security on 15 June 2024.

Organization

The Ministry of National Security was re-created in 2024 following the dissolution of the Ministry of National Defence. The ministry has three departments:

  • Department of Intelligence
  • Department of Security
  • Department of Territorial Defense
