The Third Klarissa Sriraya ministry (Hindi: तृतीय सरला बैश्य मंत्रिमंडल) was the 9th union council of ministers of the Republic of Friends Society which was formed after the resignation of Varuna Sriraya as the Prime Minister on 12 April 2017. The ministry was headed by Klarissa Sriraya who had resigned as the President a day before. The ministry remained in office until its dissolution following the 2017 general election.
History
The December 2016 general election resulted in a victory of the United Alliance and the re-election of Prime Minister Varuna Sriraya to office. However, weeks after being elected as MPs, several MPs who were elected as members of the Friends Society Secular Party joined the Friends Society Independent Party and the Friends Society Freedom Party and at one point of time, the Secular Party which was the principal partner of the coalition was reduced to a mere junior coalition party. On 18 February 2017, Prime Minister Varuna Sriraya along with several of his cabinet colleagues quit the Secular Party and joined the Independent Party. The President Klarissa Sriraya was prompt to recognize Varuna Sriraya as the leader of the Independent Party legislature party allowing him to continue as the prime minister.
On 11 April 2017, Prime Minister Varuna Sriraya completed a year in office which was also marked by the Independent Party's victory in the state elections of Greater Guwahati, North Guwahati and Central Guwahati. It was on the same day that President Klarissa Sriraya suddenly announced her resignation from office sparking speculations of her return to the politics. She was briefly replaced by Vice President Bishnu Chetry who became the Acting President until the election of a permanent President. The next day, that is on 12 April 2017, Prime Minister Varuna Sriraya met Klarissa Sriraya and announced that he would be stepping down from office and taking over as the President. It was moments later that he was confirmed as the nation's next President and soon sworn-in as the President by Chief Justice Tanishkaa Patranabish.
Soon after taking oath as President, he appointed Klarissa Sriraya as the Prime Minister.
Composition
Soon after the resignation of Varuna Sriraya as the prime minister, Klarissa Sriraya announced that her party, the Independent Party will withdraw from the coalition with the Secular Party and invited opposition party, the Friends Society Freedom Party to be a part of the next government and form an alliance with the Independent Party. The leaders of the Freedom Party accepted the offer and joined the government forming an alliance with the Independent Party. The alliance between the two parties forced the Secular Party to accept the position of the chief opposition party.
The ministry composed of the Prime Minister Klarissa Sriraya and Deputy Prime Minister Arnab Sil who had earlier resigned as the Governor of Greater Guwahati. Among the cabinet ministers included Abhiraj Kar, Anirban Phatowali and Bhargab Jyoti Medhi. The ministers of state with independent rank included Mridul Amin, Saikat Seal, Manoj Chetry and Tanvi Sridasa, while Jemina Hazarika was appointed as a minister of state. Bhargab Jyoti Medhi who was a minister of state in the previous Fourth Varuna Sriraya ministry was promoted as a cabinet minister.
