Sanghita Roy is a Vishwamitran politician who is currently serving as the Mayor of Navanna, the capital city of Madhya Prant since 29 March 2023 and has previously served as the Mayor of Gotanagar between 2020 and 2023. She has served as the governors of several states including Uttaranchal, Beltola, Basistha and Kamrupa and has also been a member of the union council of ministers.

She served as the Minister of Social Justice and Welfare and as the Minister of Cabinet Affairs in the second ministry of prime minister Tanishkaa Patranabish in 2017 and then as the Minister of Religious Affairs and Social Services in the fifth ministry of Tanishkaa Patranabish in 2020. She also holds the record of being the longest-serving governor of Beltola with a record three-term in office.

She is a personal friend and classmate of Tanishkaa Patranabish and former minister, Sampriti Paul.

Career

Ministerial career

Sanghita Roy joined the union council of ministers as a junior minister, or Minister of State, in the Ministry of Sanitation and Cleanliness Campaign on 14 May 2016 under prime minister Varuna Sriraya along with her senior ministerial colleague Sampriti Paul. She served in the ministry until being dropped from the council of ministers in a cabinet reshuffle which took place on 10 July 2016.

She was appointed as a cabinet minister on 5 July 2017 after her election to the Sadasya Sabha as a candidate of the Secular Party in the unity government of prime minister Tanishkaa Patranabish. She was appointed as the Minister of Social Justice and Welfare and held the charge of the portfolios until their merger to form the Ministry of Human Resource Development on 6 August 2017. Thereupon, she was appointed as the Minister of Cabinet Affairs, a position she held until her resignation on 7 September 2017. Ten days after her resignation from the cabinet, she was appointed as the Governor of Basistha on 17 September 2017.

Upon relinquishing her duties as the Governor of Kamrup Pradesh on 31 December 2019, she was appointed to the union cabinet on 3 January 2020. She was appointed as the Minister of Religious Affairs, and Social Services under prime minister Tanishkaa Patranabish. She served as the minister until resigning from office only a month later on 2 February 2020. A week later, she was re-appointed as the Governor of Basistha.

Gubernatorial career

Sanghita Roy is one of the longest serving governors in the nation and also one of the most appointed governors after Reshmi Hazarika. She was first appointed as the Governor of South Guwahati on 18 September 2016 following the creation of the federal divisions. She continued to serve as the inaugural governor until being dismissed on 13 November 2016 and was succeeded by Anirban Phatowali. She was re-appointed as the Governor of South Guwahati on 2 January 2017 and continued to remain in office until 12 April 2017 and was succeeded by Anoushkaa Patranabish as the governor.

In September 2017, she was dropped from the union council of ministers and few days later, on 17 September 2017, she was appointed as the Governor of Basistha after Basistha was re-granted with statehood. She remained as the governor of the state until being transferred as the Governor of Beltola (formerly, South Guwahati) for a third term in office on 23 April 2018. She remained as the governor of Beltola until the end of her tenure on 4 February 2019. In her three terms in office as the Governor of Beltola, she holds the record of being the longest serving Governor of the state. Upon ending her third term as the Governor of Beltola on 4 February 2019, she was appointed as the Governor of Uttar Guwahati and continued to remain in office until being dismissed from office by the President on 15 June 2019. Upon her dismissal, Ankurjyoti Thakuria was appointed to succeed her as the governor.

On 4 September 2019, she was appointed as the Governor of Kamrup Pradesh to succeed her former colleague Sampriti Paul who was transferred as the Governor of Uttaranchal. As the governor, she appointed Ishika Das as the Chief Minister of the state on 22 November 2019. She continued to serve as the governor till 31 December 2019 when Kamrup Pradesh ceased to be a state of the union and became an union territory upon the passage of the "State Reorganization Act–Kamrup Pradesh".

Following stepping down as the governor, she was briefly inducted to the union council of ministers on 3 January 2020 and served for a month. She stepped down from the cabinet on 2 February 2020, and on 10 February 2020, she was appointed as the Governor of the Federal Territory of Basistha and served until the end of tenure on 13 May 2020.

Other positions

Following her dismissal as the governor of Uttar Guwahati in June 2019, Sanghita was appointed as a non-permanent member of the National Planning Commission constituted on 19 July 2019. Two days later, on 21 July, she was unopposed elected to the Parliament from the Post Office parliamentary constituency of Uttaranchal which was vacated by Anirban Phatowali following his appointment as the Governor of Madhya Prant.

On 30 July 2019, she was appointed as Secretary to the Prime Minister, a position she held till her appointment as governor in September 2019. She resigned from her parliamentary seat on 4 September 2019 following being appointed as governor.

Mayoral positions

Following the creation of the capital cities of the states on 26 July 2020 by a royal ordinance, Sanghita was initially appointed as the Governor of Gotanagar by then Rashtradhyaksh Tanishkaa Patranabish. The position of the governor was amended to that of the mayor. She continued to serve as the Mayor of Gotanagar and as the head of the Gotanagar Development Council until being transferred and appointed as the Mayor of Navanna on 29 March 2023 to succeed Reshmi Hazarika, who was appointed as the Governor of Uttaranchal.
