Sampriti Paul is a Vishwamitran politician who is currently serving as the Governor of Basistha since 28 July 2024. Prior to become governor, she had also served as the Mayor of Dadara from 2020 until 2023. She has served as a minister in the union cabinet holding numerous key portfolios including serving as Minister of Education, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Minister of Law and Justice, etc.

Career

Ministerial career (2016–2019)

Sampriti joined Vishwamitra at the persuasion of her friend Tanishkaa Patranabish, then President, in 2016. Months later, on 14 May 2016, she was appointed as the Minister of Sanitation and Cleanliness Campaign in the third ministry of prime minister Varuna Sriraya, while her other friend Sanghita Roy was appointed as her deputy. In a cabinet reshuffle which took place on 10 July 2016, in which many cabinet ministers were demoted as minister of state (independent charge), she too lost her cabinet post and was appointed as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Tax and Revenue. She remained in the ministry until her appointed as the Chief Minister of South Guwahati on 18 September 2016. She served as the Chief Minister of South Guwahati state from September 2016 until her April 2017.

She was reappointed a minister in the union council of ministers under prime minister Tanishkaa Patranabish on 7 September 2017 and assigned the portfolios as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for States, and Minister of State for External Affairs and Law and Justice. She was reappointed a minister on 25 December 2017 in the fifth ministry of prime minister Varuna Sriraya and appointed as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Sports and Youth Affairs and also retained her role as minister of state in the Ministry of External Affairs. Following the re-election of Varuna Sriraya as the prime minister on 21 March 2018, she was re-inducted into the council of ministers and promoted to cabinet rank. She was appointed as the Minister of Statistics and Programme Implementation. She continued to hold the charge of the ministry along with the charge as Minister of Law and Justice and Minister of Planning until 12 October 2018 under presidents Tanishkaa Patranabish and Varuna Sriraya.

She was demoted for the second time as a minister of state on 12 October 2018 in the seventh ministry headed by Varuna Sriraya and was appointed as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Environment and Nature and for Sanitation and Hygiene. She was moved as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Regional and State Affairs in the fourth ministry of prime minister Tanishkaa Patranabish formed on 7 January 2019. She was later appointed as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Statistics and Programme Implementation on 17 March 2019 and served in office until 3 June 2019, when she was appointed as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Planning and Programme Implementation. She was moved to the Ministry of Sanitation and Natural Resources as minister of state (independent charge) on 16 July 2019, and was also assigned the charge of the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Culture on 17 August 2019. She resigned from the council of ministers on 1 September 2019.

Governorship (2019–2020)

Days after her resignation from the union council of ministers, on 4 September 2019, she was appointed as the Governor of Kamrup Pradesh succeeding Rajdeep Deka who was transferred and appointed as the Governor of Purvanchal. Just having served a month in office, she was transferred and appointed as the Governor of Uttaranchal on 4 October 2019 in place of Bhargab Jyoti Medhi who was transferred as the Governor of Beltola. On 14 November 2019, the Supreme Court gave the verdict on the dismissal of members of parliament serving as the chief ministers of the states, and on 19 November, President's rule was imposed in all the states and she assumed the executive power of the administration of Uttaranchal. On 22 November 2019, she appointed Dishant Kashyap as the Chief Minister of the state.

She remained in office as the Governor until 2 February 2020 when the governors of the states were promoted to the status as governors-general of the dominions.

Ministerial career (2020)

A month after stepping down as governor, she was inducted into the caretaker ministry of prime minister Anoushkaa Patranabish on 3 March 2020 and assigned portfolios as Minister of Law and Justice and Minister of Education. She was re-inducted as a minister in the sixth ministry of prime minister Tanishkaa Patranabish as Minister of Environment and Natural Resources and Minister of Sanitation and Public Hygiene. She retained her role as environment minister in the seventh ministry of Tanishkaa Patranabish formed on 13 May 2020 along with the charge as Minister of Education. She briefly served as Minister of Law and Justice and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs from 8 June until 17 June 2020 under prime minister Anoushkaa Patranabish.

Mayorship (2020–2023)

Sampriti was appointed as the first governor of Dadara city of Kamrupa on 26 June 2020 by Rashtradhyaksh Tanishkaa Patranabish. On 11 November 2020, the governors of the cities were re-designated as mayors. She continued to serve as mayor until being replaced by Bhargab Jyoti Medhi on 29 March 2023.

Sampriti was appointed as the Governor of Basistha on 28 July 2024.
