The position was created on 15 April 2007 following the creation of the Ministry of Sports by prime minister Arnisha Phatowali and her deputy Varuna Sriraya was appointed as the inaugural officeholder.
History
The Ministry of Sports was created by prime minister Arnisha Phatowali on 15 April 2007. Deputy Prime Minister Varuna Sriraya served as the inaugural minister in the ministry, serving in office until April 2008 when he was replaced by Abhiraj Kar. The ministry was renamed the Ministry of Fun by prime minister Klarissa Sriraya and Asmi Patranabis was appointed as the minister of fun. The ministry reverted back to its original name on 22 February 2015 under prime minister Tanishkaa Patranabish.
The ministry was renamed the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs on 10 July 2016 by prime minister Varuna Sriraya. Rajdeep Deka who served as the Minister of Sports with cabinet rank was demoted as minister of state (independent charge) and appointed as the inaugural minister in the ministry. The ministry was briefly merged with several other ministries on 6 August 2017 to constitute the Ministry of Human Resource Development, but soon was carved out again as an independent ministry on 7 September 2017.
On 17 June 2020, in prime minister Anoushkaa Patranabish's second ministry, the ministry was merged with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture to constitute the Coordinating Ministry of Human Resource, Culture and Youth Affairs and Rajdeep Deka headed the ministry. On 28 January 2021, the coordinating ministry was trifurcated into three constituent ministries, and the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs was re-established. Further, on 17 March 2022, the ministry was merged with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture to form the Ministry of Education, Culture and Youth.
On 12 May 2022, the ministry was trifurcated and the sports and youth affairs department was constituted as the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The ministry was merged into the Ministry of Culture on 29 March 2024, and later became a part of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport on 12 May 2024.
The Ministry of Sports was re-established on 15 June 2024.
