The Minister of National Defence (Hindi: राष्ट्रीय रक्षा मंत्री), commonly shortened to National Defence Minister is the minister in the Cabinet of Vishwamitra who is responsible for overseeing the nation's military affairs and other defence and security-related matters. The minister is the head of the Ministry of National Defence. The first Minister of National Defence was Abhiraj Kar who held the title of State Counsellor and was appointed on 14 May 2018 following the establishment of the ministry. The current Minister of National Defence is Jayden Dagsa who was appointed on 13 October 2023.
The Minister of National Defence is often assisted by a junior minister, titled as the Minister of State for National Defence who acts as the deputy to the National Defence Minister and the second highest office holder in the Ministry of National Defence.
History of office
The Minister of National Defence has been the head of the Ministry of National Defence since its formation on 14 May 2018 and is one of the senior ministerial positions in the cabinet. The first minister was Abhiraj Kar who was appointed following the establishment of the ministry. Often prime ministers and deputy prime ministers held the portfolio of Defence during their tenures.
Role and duties
The minister is usually one of the most senior members of Cabinet and a member on the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). The minister is seen as one of the people most responsible for formulating Vishwamitra's nation's military, security affairs, as they along with other relevant ministers advise the Prime Minister in developing the national military and formulating laws and policies to develop the military and related infrastructure, and also acts as the government's main spokesperson on military subjects. The minister is also the principal advisor to the Rashtradhyaksh on matters on defence.
