The Grand Duchy of Rai (Sabian: baraibarakurói Ra), simply known as Rai is a federal state of the Abeldane Empire, founded in 2016. From July to August 2016, it was known as the Grand Duchy of Bergendorf, and from August 2016 to June 2017 it was known as the Grand Duchy of New Lviv. Its current monarch is Tarik of Kârjasary, King of Sabia and Verona.

Rai claims territory in Argentina, not far from Sabia and Verona's southernmost claims of Alios and Gonn, and Austenasia's crown dependency of Esmondia, and in the United States. The capital of Rai is Batori. The first Grand Duke of Bergendorf was Angelo I, who was succeeded by Grant in August 2016, as Grand Duke of New Lviv. Tarik became Grand Duke on 30 June 2017, and renamed the Grand Duchy as Rai.

Etymology

The word rai comes from the Sabian language, and it means "primordial", "superior" or "king". The demonym of the Grand Duchy is rai. New Lviv, the grand duchy's former name, comes from the city of Lviv in the Ukraine.

History

The state was originally founded in 2016 as the Grand Duchy of Bergendorf, a name it held briefy while it was governed by Grand Duke Angelo I. The Grand Duchy's original claims lay in the United States. When Angelo abdicated in August 2016, the Grand Duchy was given to Grant Hawkins, who became Grand Duke Grant and renamed the state New Lviv, for the Ukrainian city of Lviv.

Following Grand Duke Grant's abdication in June 2017, Emperor Stephen granted the Grand Duchy to Tarik Kârjasary, King of Sabia and Verona, who renamed it as Rai, the Sabian word for "primordial" and "king". The Grand Duchy's North American claims were ceded back and new land in Argentina near Sabia and Verona was claimed.

In September 2017, the Principality of Skandberg was merged with Rai, and so the Grand Duchy once again attained land claims in North America.
