Country Sorrenia

The Republicans are a political coalition in the Kingdom of Sorrenia, seeking to depose King Ronald and restore the now defunct Sorrenian Federation.

History

Sorrenian Workers Party

The SWP was the predecessor to The Republicans, and was consistently the largest party in government throughout its history.

With several presidents and constant control of the National Assembly, the SWP implemented a wide array of policy, concerning matters such as culture, secularism, the role of the military and social affairs.

Upon the stagnation of Sorrenia in 2016, the SWP government officially called time on the Sorrenian project, after which a militant group of fascists seized power and formed the State of Sorrenia.

War of the Sorrenian Succession

After several years of stagnation, various Workers Councils and smaller members of the SWP formed the Socialist League, with the intention of toppling the fascist government and restoring the Sorrenian Federation.

Although initially successful, seizing control over southern and eastern Sorrenia, and ultimately taking the cities of Durham and Levaria, the Socialist League was pushed back and ultimately defeated by the Royal Army, an alliance of monarchists, conservatives and centrists who wished to create a Sorrenian monarchy.

The Socialist League was utterly routed, and only remained in a small town called Horden.

Kingdom of Sorrenia and Continued Insurgency

Much of the Socialist League was granted amnesty in return for their ceasing hostilities, although a small number of Socialist League members continue to fight the government from within Horden.

Many of these individuals who received amnesty formed The Republicans, a spiritual descendent of the Sorrenian Workers Party. It quickly became the largest opposition party, and joint largest party alongside the New Monarchists, winning roughly a third of the vote in consecutive elections.

Although The Republicans' leadership is largely made up of ex-SWP members, their minor role in the predecessor party has led some to criticise The Republicans for claiming a continuation between them and the SWP, instead viewing the party as a wholly new organisation.

In Opposition

The Republicans have failed to win any election in the Kingdom's history, and it is unsure what would occur if they won an election, given that they call for the dissolution of the monarchy.

The party continues to amass significant support, largely from the working-class areas of Durham, and the inner cities of Newcastle, Sunderland, Hortania, Middlesbrough and the Humberside.

Electoral Performance

The Republicans' predecessor, the Sorrenian Workers Party consistently won elections throughout 2014 and 2015. With the creation of the Kingdom of Sorrenia however, The Republicans have been resigned to opposition, although they remain the joint largest political party in the country.

Party Factions

The Republicans - more so than other Sorrenian political parties - are divided into several geographical factions. The two largest factions - the Pitmatics and Millomists are almost entirely located in two separate regions of Sorrenia. Two smaller factions - the communists and the anarchists - do not follow this geographical division, although are far smaller in influence:

 • Pitmatics - the Pitmatics emerged as a response to the growth in a student-based faction of the Republicans. Pitmatics entirely source their support from the Durham-Tyne-Wear regions of Sorrenia, and identify the old proletariat of the North as possessing the unique status of a vanguard class for Sorrenia and its Northumbrian culture
 • Millomists - the Millomists emerged after the Great Expansion, and largely source their support from student-heavy populations in Hortania, Yorkshire and the Humberside. The Millomists call for redistribution of power away from the Durham-Tyne-Wear regions in favour of the south and west
 • Communists - the communists call for an explicit adoption of Marxism-Leninism in the party platform, and generally advocate greater societal change through revolution
 • Anarchists - by far the smallest faction, the anarchists also call for revolutionary change, but reject the Marxist-Leninist dogma

Policies

 • Republicanism - as the name suggests, the coalition aims to restore the Federation by first deposing King Ronald.
 • Socialism - the party is primarily socialist, although strong internal factions include communists and anarchists.
 • Left-wing Nationalism - Sorrenia's cultural identity should necessarily be intertwined with its working-class heritage
 • Northumbrianism - Sorrenia should be redefined as a Northumbrian entity, with greater cultural emphasis on Northumbria's unique heritage
