The Order of Lady Mary (Portuguese: Ordem de Dona Maria) is national and dynastic order of the Kingdom of Ebenthal, granted at the monarch's pleasure exclusivelly to women, usually in recognition of a national contribution, for public service, or for personal service to the sovereign. It was established in 2019 by King Arthur II as a dynastic order of the House of Bruyn incorporated to the national pantheon of orders and awards. Its name and inspiration came from the monarch's grandmother, Dona Maria Carvalho de Oliveira.

As a house order, the entire administration of the order lies with the person of the monarch, not with the crown, and thus appointments are at the sovereign's sole discretion. Membership of the order is unlimited and supernumerary.

History

The Order of Lady Mary was the first order established by the King Arthur II of Ebenthal after taking the throne of that country, on 30 December 2019. The order was instituted through Royal Decree No. 224/2019 under the auspices of the new monarch in valuing women in micronationalism, "a growing minority" according to the King himself. Another reason for the creation of the order was to pay homage to Princess Maria de Belmonte, grandmother of King Arthur II.

In view of the fact that the order was created within the first 24 hours of Arthur II's reign, the King asked the former Regent Raphael Sousa, 1st Duke of Sternachten, to co-sign the Royal Decree in order to further legitimize his action lest it be interpreted as a self-centered attitude and lest it be rejected by parliament, a fear of the monarch given the political power that the Ebenthal parliament achieved after the Mateusian Crisis and during the Sternachten regency.

Composition

Members

Membership in the order is unlimited and exclusively for women. The only exception is Monarch who is the Sovereign and Grand Master of the Order. The Monarch alone can grant membership at his own pleasure, meaning it has no requirements for a person to be inducted a member of the order except for being female. Monarchs are known as Sovereign of the Order of Lady Mady. Members of the order are divided between "Royal Ladies" and "Stranger Ladies". Other than that they are referred collectively to as "Dames".

Grades

The King of Ebenthal is the Sovereign and Grand Master of the order. All deeds granting decorations of the Order must bear the signature of the Sovereign and Grand Master. The Deputy Grand Master is empowered to act on behalf of and in place of the monarch if necessary and with the express approval of the monarch; if the monarch is unable to give his consent, it is up to the Head of the House of Bruyn to sanction the acts of the Deputy Grand Master. The office of Deputy Grand Master is currently vacant. Members of the order are granted a certificate and are eligible to require a personal coat of arms with the insignia of the Order. Despite being a single-graded order, there is a division of registration between Royal Ladies, who are citizens of Ebenthal appointed to be members of the order, including supernumerary members of the Royal Family, and Stranger Ladies, foreigners appointed as members of the order. There is, however, no difference in precedence between these classifications.

Precedence and privileges

Members of this order are assigned positions in the order of precedence, ranking above all others members of equal rankings of whichever orders. Consorts, children and children-in-law also feature on the order of precedence; other relatives of members, however, are not assigned any special precedence. Generally, individuals can derive precedence from their parents or consorts as long as the recipient lives.

All members ot the order are entitled to the prefix "Ma'am". When an individual is entitled to use multiple post-nominal letters, the ones of the order (DDM), standing for Dama de Dona Maria in Portuguese, takes precedence. All recipients may encircle their arms with the circlet of the order.
