New Switzerland, officialy Principality of New Switzerland (Portuguese: Principado da Nova Suíça; Hunsirk: Fürstentum Neue Schweiz) is one of the six provinces and seven administrative divisions of the Kingdom of Ebenthal. The province is encrusted in the mountainous region of the State of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, being entirely landlocked by the city of Nova Friburgo. With 0.6 km², it is home to 16 inhabitants spreading across 3 cities: Braunau, its capital, New Gallar (formerly Bracara) and Recceswinth. New Switzerland is one of Ebenthal's two officially bilingual provinces, with Portuguese and Hunsrik, being spoken natively by the entire population, the latter being the most spoken language. An unique case within Ebenthal, New Switzerland is governed as a devolved government under an authoritarian absolute monarchy by the House of Scherer-Arrais. The province is represented at the House of Councillors by two elected Councillors. Historically, New Switzerland is a conservative stronghold, historically represented in the national parliament almost exclusively by members of the Conservative Party.
New Switzerland's history pre-dates its micronational existence, having serving as route to inland Amerindians to reach the Atlantic coast. The region was uninhabited unitl the early 19th century, when mainly Swiss immigrants, but also Germans and Austrians established a germanic colony there at the invitation of King John VI of Portugal and Brazil. In the 21st century, what would come to be New Switzerland was settled by the Santos family, the Scherer-Arrais family and the Beato family. In 28 January 2014, when Arthur Brum established the Kingdom of Roschfallen, he merged his stepfather's lands in Magé with those of the Beato family in Petrópolis, and later with those of the Scherer-Arrais family in Nova Friburgo, to create the Department of Gros Morne. That same year, in 11 August, amidst a political crisis, Lord Arthur, 1st Duke of Gallar, followed by Antônio Scherer-Arrais, proclaimed the independence of their properties from Gros Morne and Roschfallen and, along with other Roschfallenian nobles. Initially, the Beato's properties of Gros Morne became the Most Serene Republic of Gallar, but in two days the proto-country was merged to other nobles' lands to create the Kingdom of Ebenthal. The Duke of Gallar's and Antônio's fiefs then were created the Principality of New Switzerland in 13 August, with Antônio taking over as the reigning Prince within Ebenthal's then-federal system. Eventually, the properties of the House of Beato in Petrópolis were sold, reducing the principality to the border limits of Nova Friburgo. The Neo-Swiss monarchy was abolished on 5 February 2022 through the Ebenthali Unitary Act, with the principality being transformed into a province. Nonetheless, in a political twist, in 15 February the monarchy was restored.
The principality's name, "New Switzerland", comes from the geographical region in which it is located, and from its historical colonization by immigrants mainly of Swiss origin, but also by Austrians and Germans. In the process of colonization and settlement, the Brazilian city of Nova Friburgo, in which the principality is enclaved, became the main nucleus of Swiss immigration, having received the nickname of Swiss Brazilian, and sometimes, New Switzerland.
