The Commonwealth of Greene is a micronational state within the North American Confederation. Greene is the 2nd largest (by area), the most populous, and the most densely populated of the Confederation's states. The state's capital and largest city is the City of Wright.
The state takes its name from the county that originally was a part of the U.S. state of Ohio, which itself was named after General Nathanael Greene, an officer in the American Revolutionary War. The state, originally an independent micronation in its own right, was one of the initial member states to join the North American Confederation on 28 November 2010.
The government of the Commonwealth is a Direct Democracy led by Archon Joseph Marx who also holds the position of Prime Minister of the North American Confederation.
The Commonwealth currently has a total area of 10.812 square miles, the only major waterways being the Little Beaver Creek in the Village of Greenedge and Big Walnut Creek, which forms the eastern border of North Amfield Township.
Almost the entirety of the state is suburban, with only sparse forests and parks throughout.
The climate of Greene is a humid continental climate. Summers are typically hot and humid throughout the state, while winters generally range from cool to cold. Precipitation in Greene is moderate year-round. Severe weather is not uncommon in the state as it lies in Tornado Alley.
Townships and Cities
The Commonwealth is divided into four townships. The City of Wright is the largest and most populace of townships and acts as the state capital and residence of the Hall of the Archon. The second-most populated is the Amfield Township, which is divided further into a North Amfield and South Amfield. The Village of Greenedge is the southernmost township and holds a large portion of the economic power of the region. Finally, the Highland Township is the smallest and least populated, possessing only a single citizen.
United States Rule
On 1 March 1803, Ohio was admitted as a state into the United States of America under then-President Thomas Jefferson. Greene County, which would later become the Commonwealth of Greene, was organized on 24 March 1803.
Ohio's central position within the growing U.S. and its population gave it an important place during the American Civil War. The Ohio River was a vital artery for troop and supply movements, as were Ohio's numerous railroads. Overall, Ohio contributed more soldiers per capita than any other state in the Union.
United American Kingdom
The United American Kingdom was started on 31 May 2008. Joseph Marx gathered a group of his friends together and founded the United American Kingdom, declaring himself King Joseph I of the UAK.
While mostly declared for fun and taking up only the size of his neighborhood, as the nation developed, it began to necessitate a new identity as it entered the larger micronational world. To facilitate this, the kingdom was reorganized into the Ohio River Republic on 22 June 2008.
Ohio River Republic
Upon its reorganization, the Republic still retained much of the same government system, with the then King Joseph I still acting as an absolute monarch.
Almost immediately, the inactivity of the republic's citizens and its overall joking appearance started to stagnate the young nation and force it to collapse after only a few months. King Joseph I sought to once again reform it.
To assist in the reformation and reorganization of the Republic, Joseph created the Universal Rights of Man, a moral code created to limit the power of the monarchy which became the cornerstone of the new Empire by allowing King Joseph I to declare the establishment of a Moralistic Absolute Monarchy.
On 28 Aug 2008, the Ohio Empire was declared, the entirety of Ohio was claimed, and King Joseph I changed his name to Emperor Malum I. The Emperor worked diligently to establish the Empire as a powerful micronational force. Numerous alliances and mutual recognitions were established and the Empire even became a founding member of the original Grand Unified Micronational.
The Empire became a primary combatant in the Siple War and founded the Micronational War on Terror. Overall, the Emperor held the nation in a state of near-perpetual pacifism, becoming a symbol of micronational peace. During the New European Civil War, this pacifism was broken by an invasion of Ohio by Rebel forces. Though eventually driven out, this event had a massive impact on the nation and the Emperor's philosophy, as well as strengthening ties between the two empires of Ohio and New Europe.
Around late 2009, an old problem had once again begun to rear its head. Inactivity was rampant through the nation and the 16 year old Emperor was having difficulty maintaining his realm. In addition, the Emperor, who was a longtime proponent of libertarianism had grown to despise his royal titles. A solution came in the form of the North American Confederation.
The North American Confederation and the Rise of the Republic
On 28 November 2010, Wilhelm von Hartmann-Peters of New Europe unified the nations of New Europe, Eniarku and the Ohio Empire into the North American Confederation. With the absorption into the Confederation, the Empire was officially declared as the Republic of Ohio, though the Confederation collapsed before the Emperor could legally renounce his titles.
The Republic went through very little progress as 2010 turned into 2011 and when both the Lethler Incident and Micras Issue occurred, which collapsed the first North Amercan Confederation, it spelled the end of the Republic for nearly four years.
Reconstruction and Commonwealth
In May 2015, Emperor William I contacted the former Emperor of Ohio and began the process of reconstructing the North American Confederation. Joseph Marx became the new Prime Minister of a provisional government and with the signing of the Unification Agreement, which passed the title of Emperor of Ohio (Now Prince of Ohio) onto the Imperial heir of the Confederation, and the Land Claims Act of 2015, which formally transformed the Republic of Ohio, into the Commonwealth of Greene, establishing a provisional government within the state and shrinking its borders to only a single county.
According to the monthly national census, last taken on 1 June 2016, there were 9 people residing in the state. The population density was 0.83 inhabitants per square mile. The racial demographics of the Commonwealth was 100% White, of primarily German and Irish heritage.
The median age of the Commonwealth is 18.9.8 years. 55.6% were between the ages of 18 and 24. In addition, 22.2% were between the ages of 25 and 54, while 22.2% were below the age of 18. The gender makeup of the state is roughly 55.6% male and 44.4% female.
The Commonwealth of Greene has not established a state language, though English is the most widely spoken. Interestingly, every citizen can speak more than one language.
Freedom of Religion is protected within the Commonwealth of Greene. Even with this, the population of the state is a majority Roman Catholic and Agnostic/Atheism, both with 40% of the total populations declaring themselves as such. The remaining 20% prescribe to New Age religious practices.
Due to a long period of political and social upheaval, the Commonwealth currently has no known statistics in regards to GDP and other economic statistics. While unemployment is 0%, the Amero lack of value makes taxation impossible.
Law and Government
The Commonwealth is a Direct Democracy. The Head of State is referred to as the Archon, who is popularly elected by the citizens of the Commonwealth. The current acting Archon is Joseph Marx, who also acts as the Prime Minister of the North American Confederation. Until the establishment of a formal constitutional document, the government is provisional.
The Universal Rights of Man
These moral codes were created during the Ohio Empire period to limit the power of the monarchy and to protect the citizens of the Empire from future emperors. These codes were above even the emperor and set the basis for equal balance power between the Emperor and the Citizens. The Rights were eventually abolished as official law by the Unification Agreement of 2015.
1. These rights are eternal and cannot be taken by any citizen of the state including the Emperor.
2. If any right is wished to be added by a majority of the citizens it will be turned into a new moral code.
3.The citizens have the right to individuality. This includes free religion, speech, assembly, and press.
4. No citizen may be held without a charge for more than 24 hours.
5. No Emperor may ever establish a death penalty.
6. No citizen shall be denied rights on the account of age, sex, religion, or race.
7. The citizens have the obligation to remove an emperor from power if he tries to deny any one of the rights included above.
8. A person convicted of a crime cannot be sent twice for the same crime. Also, all convicted must stand trial by a jury. The jury shall include the Emperor as well as a citizen chosen by a lottery.
Flag of the Commonwealth
The Flag of the Commonwealth is based very heavily upon the flag of Ohio which is the U.S. state from which the Commonwealth declared its independence. Like the Ohioan flag, the Commonwealth banner is swallowtail design. This shape and the general design is meant to honor the U.S. state from which the Commonwealth of Greene resided.
The alternating black and green bands are meant to represent the five forms the Ohioan nation has taken in its history. The black bands represent the monarchies, with the top and bottom representing the United American Kingdom and the Ohio River Republic respectively while the middle represents the Ohio Empire. The green bands represent the democratic nations like the short-lived Republic of Ohio that was declared alongside the 1st Confederation and the current Commonwealth.
The blue triangle on the left-hand side and the design within are once again derived from the flag of Ohio. However, the color of the triangle is a lighter NAC Blue to call homage to the flag of the North American Confederation. The image within the white circle is part of the Great Seal of the Commonwealth, currently under development. The four cardnial stars represent the four original citizens which formed the UAK, while the remaining eight stand for the eight Universal Rights of Man, which formed such a crucial part of the nation's history.
