Elected Chair

Henry Clémens

An election to select the 41st Chair of the Grand Unified Micronational is due to take place in September 2024. The election was called after 40th Chair Newton von Uberquie resigned. The winner will serve until the end of December 2024. The election was considered important regarding the future of the organisation, and had the highest turnout since the December 2022 Grand Unified Micronational election.

Background

Procedure

The Charter of the Grand Unified Micronational (GUM) stipulates that an election for the Chair and Vice-Chair of the organisation be held before each executive term; thus every six months. There are two executive terms per year, the first from 1 January to 30 June and the second from 1 July to 31 December. In the event of a special election (such as due to the Chair's resignation), the charter states that the term limit "does not affect the start and end of the ordinary terms; the specially-elected chair and vice-chair serve only until the start of the next ordinary term." Furthermore, if the office becomes vacant within said Chair's first three months, the charter stipulates that "a new chair and vice-chair must be elected as soon as possible to serve the remainder of the term." In such an event, the incumbent vice-chair will serve as the acting chair until the election of a new administration.

The chair and vice-chair are elected on a joint ticket; the chair chooses their vice-chair. Any delegate of a full member state of the GUM may run for either office, and each member state is entitled to a vote. The Quorum of Delegates "must specify the procedures for voting" before each election. Although the election uses ranked voting, there are only two candidates, making it a de facto first-past-the-post system. The Director-general of the organisation, Adam I, Emperor of the Empire of Adammia, organised and oversaw the election.
