The Uber-Essian Union is a legal union between the royal Essian House of Clémens and Uberquiesenberger House of von Uberquie establishing a trans-continental confederal diarchy. Due to the Union's broader lack of international recognition, it is considered to be a micronation. Its conception was the product of several years of close friendship between the Essian Commonwealth and Palatinate of Uberquiesenberg spanning from both states' periods as colonies of Mercia in 2016, and reaching until the Commonwealth's dismemberment in March 2018. It is common for the Union's name to be shortened to simply Uber-Esse, the Union moniker, or colloquially as Uberessenberg.
The Essian Commonwealth made up the most notable side of a seasoned history of micronations in the area surrounding Houston, Texas, and was the first micronation to be constructed in the region following the first dissolution of the Federated States of America. Uberquiesenberg traces its roots as far back as 2014. Both micronations entered a colonial period in 2016, however newfound autonomy in the following years saw the Commonwealth and Palatinate become closely tied, with Esse making Uberquiesenberg a military protectorate and the two states jointly possessing the County of New Halyards through the Treaty of New Halyards.
Following the Commonwealth's disestablishment in 2018, relations ended entirely until talks in early 2020 began to form a central Union between the Essian and Uberquiesenberger peoples. These talks would result in the landmark Rema Treaty of Union, which went into effect on 1 June 2020, exactly five years after the establishment of the original Commonwealth of Esse.

The name "Uber-Esse" is a conjoining of the names of two formerly independent micronations, the Essian Commonwealth and the Democratic Confederation of the Palatinate of Uberquiesenberg.
"Esse" is most known in the English-speaking world for its relation to the Spanish and Latin languages. In the former, many know "Esse" as being pronounced as "Ese," with the second "e" using the vowel "a" sound. This is a common misconception over the pronunciation of "Esse," as the state clarifies it to be pronounced akin to the letter "S" is, "ehs."
The demonym used both to describe something belonging to Esse and in the noun for (referencing a person from Esse) is "Essian." The demonym was legally used in the nation's full name, the "Essian Commonwealth."
The suffix, "Commonwealth," has historical context from Esse's early period under an elected Lord Protector, when the nation was known as the Commonwealth of Esse. Despite changes in government structure since, the nation maintained the "commonwealth" title as a traditional style.
2014–2015: Federated States, Esse and early Uberquiesenberg
The Republic of Concord was founded on August 3 in a home known today as the city of Réma. Within two months, the micronation had expanded to encompass a participating population of four citizens, including Henry Clémens, Brandon Wu, and John Churchill, and had taken on the name the Federated States of America.
The Federated States operated under a legislative structure referred to as the Convention System, and in its first era of existence had five such conventions. In the first of such conventions, the Federated States "ratified" its first Constitution - a simply adapted version of the United States Constitution - and went to war with a nonserious parody nation known as the "USSR," adjourning after said nation surrendered unconditionally to the Federated States. In the second convention, the so-called "Progressive Moment" took hold of the Federated States and briefly led to it being renamed the "State of New Spain." The third convention saw the Federated States' first formal foreign relations, agreeing to terms with several younger micronations in the MicroWiki community, and the beginning of the penning of the "Charter of the Federated States of America," a new Constitution.
The final two conventions - the "Constitutional" and "Federal" conventions - saw controversy, disagreement, and scandal lead to the micronation's rapid decline and eventual dissolution on 1 June 2015. Thereafter, two micronations were formed as a result of the split: the Commonwealth of Esse and the Republic of Galveston.
During this time, Uberquiesenberg had been founded by Newton von Uberquie as the Empire of Uberquiesenberg, later Kingdom, with a sporadic and tumultious history. In August, 2016, Uberquiesenberg was ceded, as a colony (dubbed the Palatinate of Uberquiesenberg), under the Kingdoms and Lands Represented in the Council of the Diarchal Crowns of the Disciples, frequently shortened to simply Mercia, and Newton was subsequently appointed Palatine Viceroy. The Commonwealth of Esse briefly served as a territory in the Atlantic Commonwealth, the recognized successor to the Federated States.
2016–2017: Colonial era, Essian restoration, and autonomy
By May 2016, the Atlantic Commonwealth had been dissolved, and such began a period of instability in the Houston sector. A variety of micronations followed, one after another throughout the summer of 2016, culminating in the conception of two subject territories: the Domain of Esse, a colony of Mercia, and the Principality of Valites, a territory of the State of Koss.
As fellow colonial leaders, Patrician- and Palatine-Viceroys Henry Clémens and Newton von Uberquie, respectively, interacted closely as both friends and rivals in Mercian politics, an acquaintanceship that continued as Uberquiesenberg gained autonomy from Mercia in August and as Esse became split between its colonial possessions and newly-restored Essian Commonwealth in January 2017.
The Essian Commonwealth quickly rose to prominence within the community, and upon Clémens' ascension to the Chairmanship of the Grand Unified Micronational in March, von Uberquie was nominated and confirmed as his Vice Chairman, where he served until that September.
On 23 May 2017, Uberquiesenberg successfully gained colonial independence from Mercia, and instead became incorporated as a Constitutent State. While not sovereign, Uberquiesenberg was allowed to conduct its own domestic and foreign affairs, although the latter still required ratification by the Mercian Parliament House. During this period, Uberquiesenberg successfully passed a constitution, founded a legislative, the Angelegenheitenort, and conducted sporadic legislative affairs.
Esse and Uberquiesenberg actively held relations with one another swiftly following Essian restoration. On 25 May, the landmark Treaty of New Halyards was signed, making the previously-Essian County of Newton (named after von Uberquie originally) transform into New Halyards, a jointly-administered division between the Essian Commonwealth and Palatinate of Uberquiesenberg. Considered largely the predecessor to future tight bonds between the states, the treaty is considered a crucial part of the eventual development of the Uber-Essian Union.
Beyond the joint control of New Halyards, the Treaty also served to make Uberquiesenberg a military protectorate of Esse, and ceremonially awarded the opposite leaders with titles of honor.
- III.II - The existing County of Newton, within the territories claimed by Esse, shall cease to exist. These territories, defined within the Essian Declaration of Restoration shall instead be renamed as the County of New Halyards.
- III.III - This County shall be jointly administered by representatives from both respective nations - defined as Co-Wardens - who shall act to serve the interests of both the governments from both these nations.
- III.IV - This County shall serve as a haven of freedom for citizens of both these nations to live freely within without need of documentation that prohibits migration between these nations. Those that live within the borders of this County shall hold joint citizenship of these nations.
- III.V - This County will act as a symbol of friendship and union between Uberquiesenberg and Esse until defined otherwise. Neither shall dispute control of the territory of the other and shall, thus, defend it jointly as a mutual territory of both their states and shall be subject to both their laws with concessions to reprimand inconsistencies that shall be defined by future treaty.— Treaty of New Halyards, May 2017
The "summit" between Clémens and his former Federated States' Vice President, Brandon Wu, saw the Treaty of Evansberg as its result, and the State of Galveston thereafter became a military protectorate of the Commonwealth, which was shortly thereafter folloowed by a June general election resulting in the reelection of James Reginald Frisch to the post of Heaminister and the appointment of a majority Green government.
The Mercian colonial possession of Esse declared its independence from the Mercian Diarchy in August 2017, nearly one year after gaining colonial status.
Uberquiesenberg gained full sovereignty from Mercia during the Brazeaugate affair, when Newton motioned for full independence from Mercia in the Angelegenheitenort. The motion passed unanimously, and the Lord Temporal of Mercia decreed and thus granted Uberquiesenberg independence on 2 July 2017. By 3 July 2017, Uberquiesenberg had successfully ratified the Charter of the Grand Unified Micronational and Newton subsequently went on the become the delegate for Uberquiesenberg, taking the seat of Vice Chair representing Uberquiesenberg.
Beginning on the weekend of 25 August and continuing through the next week, Esse was struck by Hurricane Harvey, marking the fledgling micronation's most catastrophic weather event. The Palazzo del Clement declared a state of disaster for six of the state's eight counties, the first being the jointly-administered County of New Halyards. Hurricane Harvey was later declared the costliest Atlantic hurricane in recorded history.
2018–2019: Essian dissolution and Uberquiesenberger ascension
The new year opened with a new general election in Esse. Tarik Kârjasary was elected Heaminister, and The Democrats received a supermajority in a reduced Parlamenzalochas. Constitutional reforms were implemented early into Kârjasary's term, and with them, the political system of the Commonwealth was entirely re-organized. Among the main changes, the Essian monarchy became elective, and a parliamentary system replaced the absolutist form of government that had been in place since the Commonwealth's foundation.
Palatine Newton successfully ascended to the throne of the Abeldane Empire Thus, this formed a Personal Union between Uberquiesenberg and Abelden. On the 7th of January, 2019, the Palatine's partner, Sian, was appointed to the throne of Morgannwg, another constituent state of Abelden. Newton, incumbent Palatine, became the defacto King-consort of Morgannwg as a result. As such, Uberquiesenberg is effectively engaged in 3 seperate personal unions as of January, 2019.
In early February, the Lordship announced intentions to dissolve the Commonwealth, beginning with a referendum on potential dissolution on 10 February, which passed with 75 percent support. Over one month later, the "Farewell Act" was passed with a majority of votes in the Parlamenzalochas, immediately dismantling the Commonwealth on 16 March 2020.
2020–present: Treaty and subsequent state of Union
In early 2020, vocal agreement was made between Clémens and von Uberquie to begin the process of drafting an agreement to reform Uberquiesenberg as one-half of a diarchal union between the Houses of von Uberquie and Clémens. The result was the Rema Treaty of Union, which was signed and declared to officially go into effect on 1 June 2020, the five year anniversary of the Commonwealth of Esse's foundation.
Uber-Esse carries out its relations through the Office of the Heaminister. In conjunction with its Treaty of Union, the Union continues all relations established by the Palatinate of Uberquiesenberg since its independence from Mercia, considering itself the formal and legal successor to said state. States with which the Uber-Essian Union conduct formal relations are listed by the date of recognition or the beginning of relations.
- 29 August 2016: Mercia, de facto relations
- 6 June 2017: Abeldane Empire, mutual recognition
- 4 August 2017: Paravia, mutual relations
- 20 January 2019: Mahuset, mutual recognition
- 18 April 2020: Essexia, mutual cooperation
The Uber-Essian Union also holds full membership in the Grand Unified Micronational, continuing Uberquiesenberg's membership as its successor state. Uberquiesenberg gained full membership in the organization on 17 July 2017. Palatine-Viceroy Newton served as Vice-Chair of the Grand Unified Micronational during this period.

Government and politics
The Uber-Essian Union operates as a confederal diarchy that operates with a central government and parliament. At the forefront of this government are the two crowns of Esse and Uberquiesenberg, ruling jointly and with equal power. An executive branch of the government is composed of the Heaminister and Wiceminister (names derived from the Essian words for "Head minister" and "Vice minister," respectively) and their ministry. The Union Parliament, the Union's legislative body, is a unicameral legislature led by a speaker and modeled in a parliamentary style.
While the Diarchs reserve emergency powers that give them the capability to take control of the majority of government processes, the Crown prefers to separate itself from the proceedings of the Union government. The Heaminister and Union Parliament are both elected by eligible voters in the respective confederations unless appointed in emergency circumstances by the Diarchy. The terms of the executive office and the Parliament are layered; the Heaminister serves a six month term and Members of Parliament (MPs) serve three month terms, creating a general election in the middle of the Heaministerial term known as the "midterm election."
Each confederations' government varies significantly from the other, though each one has its respective diarch designated as its head of state. The Confederation of Esse adopted a political system inspired by the oligarchic republic of the former Republic of Florence in its 2020 Constitution, forming a de facto bicameral legislature composed of the Parlamenzalochas and the Signoria, with the head of government - the Gonfaloniere - elected from among the ranks of the latter. To contrast, the Confederation of Uberquiesenberg is largely feudal, with democratic features, headed by a Viceroy and featuring the Angelegenheitenort, a legislative body of the Regional of all Uberqueisenberger political divisions.
Constitutionally, there is little restriction on how each confederation arranges its government. Each confederation is required to recognize its diarch as head of state, and each confederation is required to have a "Governor," a term that is in practice used interchangeably with the confederations' legal terms for their governors, Gonfaloniere for Esse and Viceroy for Uberquiesenberg.
