r/micronations is a subreddit forum on Reddit dedicated to micronationalism and micronational discussion. The subreddit advertises itself as "an official hub for micronations across the world." Since its creation in June 2009, it has grown to over 6,000 members, making it the largest micronational related subreddit.[1]

History

The subreddit was created on 10 June 2009 by user u/nowell, who also created r/micronation on the same day, As of January 2023, r/micronation has over 1,100 members.[2]

From its early period, the subreddit received relatively little attention, until 2015 when it began growing exponentially and more users joined, it reached 1,000 members on 4 November 2017. The subreddit reached 2,000 members on 4 June 2019, 3,000 on 26 May 2020, 4,000 in January 2021 and 5,000 members in August 2021.[3]

In January 2022, the subreddit was attacked by a newly prompted moderator, who spammed over 100 posts and removed many others, changed rules, images, flairs and pernmently banned mutiple users. The subreddit was made private, before being unprivatized by user u/phunanon who also undid most of the changes.[4]

On 3 February 2024, the subreddit reached 9,000 members.

Reception

The subreddit has received criticism from micronationalists in the wider micronational community, such as in the MicroWiki Sector, where the subreddit is known by some as the Reddit Sector.[5] Criticism is often targeted at its alleged "unprofessionalism", spread of misinformation, hostile posts in the form of threats and recognition of micronational warfare, including the TOES-Almendria War, and posts surrounding Arkovia, Promatia, the Reddit Nation, Almendria and other controversial micronations.[6]
