Armando, 5th Baron of Roches (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 9 September 1961) is the 17th Head of the House of Bruyn and 5th Baron of Roches in Portugal. He is the father of King Arthur II of Ebenthal and grandfather of Heitor, Prince of Altenburg. Born in Rio de Janeiro, in the former state of Guanabara, he is the last of the nine children of Mário, 4th Baron of Roches, late head of the barional Bruyn family, and his wife Lidalva Barbosa de Sousa Savoy, a descendant in illegitimate line of King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy.

In 1981 Armando married Wanda da Costa after having a daughter with her, Princess Élida of Ebenthal. The couple remained together until 1990, having two more daughters, Princesses Laíze and Eleine. In 1992, after the death of his father, Armando became Head of the House and titular Baron of Roches. Two years later he partnered with Marilia, Princess of Triunphus, with whom he had his only child Arthur, current King of Ebenthal. The couple separated in 1998 and, from 2000 onwards, Armando lives with Fabíola in Malmünd, with whom he had two more daughters, princesses Laura and Sophia. The couple finally got married in 2014.

Graduated in hospitality and tourism and serving as a hotel manager for over 30 years, Armando also holds the positions of President of the Bank of Ebenthal and Administrator of Altenburg, in addition to being Commissioner of the Ebenthali Space Research Institute. Armando is also a poet, being the Brazilian champion of a poetry contest, as well as an amateur musician and aspiring psychoanalyst.

Biography

Early life and family

Armando van der Bruyn was born in 9 September 1961 as the youngest child of Mário van der Bruyn, 4th Baron of Roches, and Lindalva Barbosa de Sousa Sabóia, an illegitimate agnatic member of the House of Savoy as great-great-granddaughter of King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy. He was born in the former State of Guanabara, which ceased to exist when he was 14. Armando's father Mário, the 4th Baron of Roches, was legitimate son of Henrique van der Bruyn, 3rd Baron of Roches. Henrique, in turn, was son of Bernardino van der Bruyn, half-brother of Simão de Roches da Cunha Brum ("Brum" being the portuguese version of "van der Bruyn"). Simão, childless, adopted Henrique as his own son following Bernardino's death so he could inherit both the title, but more importantly, the state of the Bruyn family in the Azores.

Armando grew in the neighbourhood of Botafogo, in Rio de Janeiro, at the estate owned by his mother's family since 1876. He was educated thorugh a scholarship at the St. Ignatius College, one of the most prestigious schools in the country, graduating in 1978. He then studied hotel management at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro and later studied tourism at Estácio de Sá University.

Marriages and children

At the early age of 20, Armando had his first child, the future Princess Élida of Ebenthal, with a romantic affair, Wanda da Costa, in 1981. After it the two of them married and eventually had two more daughters, Laíze in 1984 and Eleine in 1987. Due to constant conflicts that strained the relationship, Armando and Wanda divorced in 1990. In 1994 Armando met Marília Carvalho while working at a hotel in Copacabana. The two began dating and soon decided to move in together, eventually moving to Fortaleza, in the state of Ceará, where Armando was employed as a manager of a luxury hotel. There, in 1998, the future King Arthur II of Ebenthal was born. Armando and Marília's relationship wasstable, but Armando, a womanizer, had multiple extramarital affairs (although the couple was never officially married). Because of this, Marília separated from Armando without trouble and returned to Rio de Janeiro with their son. Armando only returned to Rio de Janeiro in 2000, and began a relationship with Fabíola, a much younger black hairdresser, with whom he had two daughters, Laura in 2004 and Sophia in 2007. The couple got married in 2014.

Furthermore, Armando has five grandchildren: Heitor, Prince of Altenburg (2011), son of Princess Élida, Prince Lorenzo (2016), son of Princess Laíze, and Prince Theo (2008) and the twin Princesses Alice and Lara (2018), all children of Princess Eleine.

Role in Ebenthal

When his son Arthur became King of Ebenthal on 29 December 2019, Armando, in his capacity as owner of the Palace of Rochesburg, at the time seat of government, was immediately appointed Administrator of the capital of Ebenthal, the city of Malmünd (at that time still called Arturia). Armando was also appointed President of the Bank of Ebenthal and Royal Treasurer. In 2020, with the creation of the Ebenthali Space Research Institute and the installation of the Royal Observatory at the Palace of Rochesburg, Armando became Commissioner and part of the institute's administrative board, being primarily responsible for the Altenburg observatory. Among its main functions are the management, maintenance control and acquisition of new parts for the observatory, in addition to the maintenance of research records.

Also in 2020, the King Arthur II of Ebenthal made a decision not to grant titles to Armando so as not to prejudice his claim to the title of Baron of Roches in Portugal. Nevertheless, the monarch bestowed on his father the unique style of treatment in Ebenthal of Serene Highness.
