Safat Zareef Hassan, also known as Mssh Zareef Hassan or simply Giraffe, is a Bangladeshi-Imrulian politician, journalist, litterateur, and lawyer who is currently serving as the deputy prime minister of Imruland since 27 January 2024. He is also serving as the attorney general since 19 March 2024. Previously he served as prime minister in a full term. He was awarded the Brobel Prize 2022 in the field of Literature, the highest civilian award of Imruland, by the government on 1 January 2023. He is a member of Imruland Legend Committee, a comedian body of Imruland. He is the longest serving deputy prime minister in the history of Imruland.

Early life

Safat Zareef Hassan was born on 24 March 2007 on Ramganj, Lakshmipur, Bangladesh. Later he was transferred to Dhaka. He completed his high school education from the Shamsul Hoque Khan School and College (SHKSC). He is completing college education from the Dr. Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College (DMRC). He is currently working as the student executive in Bangladeshi science startup Science Bee.

Career in Imruland

Zareef Hassan joined Imruland as a member of the Parliament of Imruland in November 2022. A few days after his joining, the 2022 Imruland political crisis happened when deputy prime minister Shams Chomsky Rafi resigned on a sudden effect. He joined the Imruland National Party (INP) but later he left the party. He was appointed as the Minister of Information, Education, Culture, Science etc in several times. Zareef was a presidential candidate for the 2022 Imruland President Election but lost. He won the 2023 Imruland President Election and appointed as the Prime Minister of Imruland on 28 July 2023 by King Imrul I. He served as prime minister in his full term. He didn't participate in the 2023 Imruland Prime Minister Election. He was a candidate for the post of Prime Minister in the January 2024 Imruland Prime Minister Election but lost to Ishtiak Mahfuz Abdullah. Later Zareef was appointed as the deputy prime minister in the cabinet of Ishtiak and also served under Mohammad Noyon. He was appointed as the minister of science and technology on 18 August 2024 in additional charges.[1] He was appointed as the attorney general on 19 March 2024 by Governor Showib Ahmmed. As attorney general, he was the lawyer of the state in the much discussed Fokhrul Sazzad vs State case.

Zareef actively participated in the 2024 Bangladesh quota reform movement. He and Public Working Minister Shezan Khan joined a rally in Jatrabari, Dhaka on 17 July. Students from many colleges including Dr Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College, Dhaka College, Doniya College etc also joined with them. The group, led by Deputy Prime Minister, protested from 10 am to 12 pm and in the afternoon at Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Kajla area.[2] He called his fellow warriors not to let his blood be wasted if he died in a Facebook post on 18 July. He said that victory must be achieved to honor his sacrifice.[3] He said, “I want to say that this struggle has taught me to let go of the attachment to life. I am no longer afraid of death. Everyone should join the battle with this same resolve, and victory will surely come.” A government decree signed by Deputy Prime Minister Safat Zareef Hassan designated the Bangladesh Chhatra League as a terrorist and extremist organization on on 16 July for committing violence in the movement. According to the decree, the activities of Chhatra League in Imruland will be totally prohibited and considered illegal.[4]

Literature

Safat Zareef Hassan worked for Imruland Pratidin, a state-owned newspaper of Imruland. Besides, he has many works in the field of literature. He is the founding member of SHKSC Literature Club. He publishes his work regularly in different places. He was awarded the highest civilian award of Imruland Brobel Prize 2022 in the field of Literature by the government on 1 January 2023 for his short stories and brave journalism. Zareef Hassan is serving as the advisor to the SHKSC Literature Club founded by Shezan Khan.

Controversy

Zareef came under criticism after winning the controversial 2023 Imruland President Election. Presidential candidate Nazmul Hasan Fahim, supported by former President Fokhrul Sazzad, lost to him. It resulted the 2023 Imruland political crisis. President Showib Ahmmed declared a state of emergency for an indefinite period. He was threatened to attack by their supporters. However, the attack was thwarted by the Imruland Intelligence Agency (IIA). The unrest in the country delayed the transfer of power. An amendment of Constitution of Imruland was passed during the emergency period and the posts of President and Vice President were removed. A new type of government headed by the Prime Minister was introduced and election system was cancelled. Zareef Hassan was appointed as the prime minister as the winning candidate of the 2023 Imruland President Election after two weeks of passing the amendment. He served as Prime Minister in his full term.

Laterly, Zareef proposed a negotiation proposal with the the Imruland Lords Association (ILA) to end the division.[5] The negotiation was failed for their unrealistic demands.[6]
