The Popular Front and Liberals of Juclandia (Romanian: Frontul Popular și Liberalii Juclandiei), known colloquially by its acronym FP&L, and formerly known as the Popular Unity Front, is one of the four Juclandian political parties. Initially founded as a political alliance made up of the Communist Party of Juclandia, the Liberal Alliance and independent affiliated individuals, it was transformed into a single political party in 2016.

It represents the traditional Juclandian Left, which promotes principles such as anti-statism, tolerance, equality and social progressivism. The Front has been founded on the 6th of April 2014, as a result of a political crisis that has reshaped the country's politics.

On 6 November 2018 the Popular Unity Front adopted a new name and visual identity.

History

After the victory of the Progressive Juclandia alliance in the parliamentary elections of December 2023, the Communists and the Liberals became more closely aligned ideologically on the question of co-operatives, albeit for different philosophical reasons. In contrast, the Socialists favoured state-owned enterprises and a more important role for the state in the economy. The pro-State Socialists quit the first Teddy Populescu cabinet in April 2014 and triggered a political crisis.

The Popular Unity Front governed the country alone from April to November 2014, when it formed a goverment of national unity with the other two political parties in the country. As of 2024, governments of national unity have become a de facto constitutional rule, rather than an exception.

On 6 November 2018 the Popular Unity Front adopted a new name and visual identity, changing its name to the Popular Unity Group and adopting a grapevine as a symbol. It changed its name once again in 2022 and became the Popular Front & Liberals.

Leadership

The movement is led by President Benjamin Kytsou and General Secretary Ovia Bogi. However, as the President of a political movement in Juclandia usually has limited attributions, most power in the party currently rests with the General Secretary and the Central Committee, an executive body made up of 5 members, elected annually by the members of the movement.

Electoral results

The movement has yet to participate in any election, but so far its constituent parties managed to get important gains at the last elections in December 2013. Together, the Liberals and the Communists earned 44.5% of the popular vote and 13 of the 25 seats in the Assembly of Deputies. They currently have 16 deputies in the Assembly, as 3 members of the Socialist Party have defected to the FUP after the Socialists broke up the coalition agreement with the other two parties in the Progressive Juclandia coalition.
