During the peak of his political activity, Nicholas player a major role in the Ebenthaler history by uncovering the plot to overthrow King Arthur I which led to the Ebenthaler Civil War. He was also the main voice at the parliament against King Mateus I during the Mateusian Crisis, for which he was formally recognized as a national hero.

Biography

Early life and family

Nícollas Reis was born in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1995, to the middle-class family which in Ebenthal came to be known as the Reis Dynasty due to its influence in the national politics. He is the younger brother of Lord Pedro Reis, 1st Count of Gesetzhausen, who has served since Ebenthal's independence as Seneschal (head) of the Tribune of Truth, the country's supreme court, as well as cousin of André Reis, 1st Count of Balgass, who served as minister in many portfolios and member of parliament until April 2020.

Education and career

From 1998 to 2012 Nícollas attended the Gama Filho School, one of the most traditional schools of Rio de Janeiro's northern district, being son of a professor of mathematics there. In 2014 he joined the Estácio de Sá University, doing the law course and graduating in 2018. He also attended English and German courses, graduating on both, unlike his brother who gave up the German course. Nícollar further did Brazilian Jiu-jitsu lessons.

Micronational politics

Early politics

Nícollas' political career began as soon as he became a citizen of Ebenthal in November 2014, after being invited by his brother Pedro who had already been appointed Seneschal. On 20 November of that year King Arthur I conferred on Nícollas the title of Duke of Launceston (retroactively changed to Duke of Novaes in 2021) and the next day appointed him as Peer of the Realm, representing the capital Arturia.

In parliament, Nícollas became one of the co-founders of the Moderate Party and was a constituent, having participated in the preparation of the Constitution of Ebenthal promulgated in October 2015. His main contributions lie in defense of a socially liberal state, despite the conservative bias of the reigning royalty and the sect of the aristocracy closest to the royal house. Without much prominence, Nícollas twice ran for First Lord, but both times he lost the King's favor, despite the closeness between the monarch and his brother, which is why Nícollas was constantly criticized, accused of being supported by his brother's position despite of his "political inability".

Ebenthaler Civil War

In late December 2016, amid growing tension between some government politicians, led by Nilo Moreira, 1st Count of the Hidden Mound, at that time First Lord of the Conclave, and the State, headed by the King Arthur I, Nícollas was employed by the former Ebenthali Secret Service (SSE) to spy on government officials who were increasingly accused of sedition. To this end, Nícollas approached them pretending to agree with their criticism of the King - that he was not interested in his role - and was invited to join an online group formed by the insurgents under Nilo's guidance. While in the group, Mário Augusto, 1st Baron of Afonsine, suggested that the group should depose King Arthur and install Nilo as the new monarch, to which everyone unanimously agreed, with the exception of Nícollas who presented, as an option, a diplomatic exit. After a week of unsuccessful discussions, however, Nícollas was convinced that the government would not change their minds and took the information to the King that they planned to dethrone him.

On 10 January 2017 thirteen assembled nobles proclaimed Nilo King of Ebenthal. Still not knowing Nícollas's true intentions in their group, believing him to be a moderate and therefore manipulable part, the rebel nobles sought him out inviting him to join the rebellion and ended up giving him information about other nobles who had invited and accepted to participate in the new government under the "Anti-King Nilo", whereupon Nícollas again informed the King. With the escalation of the conflict after the defense of the Nilo by the Arabic Empire and the declaration of war by Ebenthal on that micronation, Nícollas, who had been instituted as the acting First Lord of the Conclave, invoked an extraordinary session, also inviting the revolting nobles, in which he delivered a widely regarded as epic speech in which he demoralized the ambitions of the Count of the Hidden Mound and his "minions, henchmen and lackeys" as he called his followers. As a result, some of the rebels abandoned the cause, earning the King's pardon and resuming their former positions, from which they had been stripped for their acts of lèse majesty.

At the end of the civil war, with the total defeat of the Arabic Empire and the isolation of Nile, which left micronationalism, Nícollar was formally recognized as a national hero in a royal decree for his "risky meritorious espionage efforts that guaranteed the Kingdom the chance to defend itself from a dangerous enemy within".

Mateusian Crisis

Later, in 2019, during the Mateusian Crisis sparked by King Mateus I, he, along with his brother Pedro Reis, 1st Count of Gesetzhausen, the Seneschal of Ebenthal, pressioned the Conclave to force the monarch's abdication. As a member of the powerful Ebenthali Reis Dynasty which, besides them, had other three members in high government offices, his leadership at the parliament was essential to force First Lord Thiago to comply with the Tribune of Truth's rogue decision to dethrone Mateus and rule him a criminal. For his brilliant action during this last crisis and his role during the civil war, he was recognized as a national hero
