Ludovic Purcel (naturalised 2019) is a Plushunian politician, Leader of the Opposition since December 2020, president of the National Liberal Party since 17 June 2020. Previously, he was vice-president of the National Liberal Party (November 2019 - June 2020) and has served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence and Internal Affairs in the Ghiță Purcel IV and V cabinets and in the Slobozeanu I cabinet. Prior to his entry in politics, Ludovic Purcel was an officer in the Plushunian Army.
Career
L. Purcel became a Plushunian citizen in late 2019 and served in the Plushunian Army during the October 2019 riots. Having distinguished himself as a highly capable officer, Ludovic rose quickly through the ranks of the military and was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs and National Defence in the Purcel IV cabinet, originally acting as an independent. After the end of the riots, Purcel retired from the military and entered politics, joining then-Prime Minister Ghiță Purcel's National Liberal Party and being elected to the Plushunian Parliament on the list of the Alliance of the Liberals and Democrats in the October 2019 legislative election. Ludovic soon became one of the party's vice-presidents and continued to serve as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs and National Defence in the Purcel V cabinet, his term ending after the said government was removed from office by a motion of no confidence. In the February 2020 legislative elections, he won a new term in the Plushunian Parliament on the list of the PNL + PNȚCD + PC Alliance, however, he did not continue his ministerial activity in the next government since the Liberals and their government partners the Social Democrats lost the election to the Democratic Party and its allies, thus being forced to go into opposition.
Although L. Purcel was rather inactive as an opposition politician, he rose to prominence once again in late May 2020, when he and several other Liberal politicians decided to remove Ghiță Purcel from the helm of the PNL, blaming him for the party's poor reputation and low performance in opinion polls. After overthrowing Gh. Purcel on 30 May through a motion of confidence tabled in the party's Executive Bureau (BEx), Ludovic became a member of the party's interim collective leadership, eventually becoming the interim President of the PNL on 17 June 2020 with the support of the BEx.
As the leader of the PNL, he focused on establishing the party as a strong center-right political force, distancing from its former ally, the Social Democratic Party, while opposing any collaboration with the Democrat Liberals. L. Purcel also promoted younger politicians to top positions in the party, replacing the controversial and corrupt figures from the Ghiță Purcel era. He also positioned the party in favor of the anti-crisis plan drafted by the Democrat Liberal government yet opposing the 20% wage cuts in the public sector and opting instead to support progressive cuts and the restructuring of public spending, approach which helped the party gain many of the PDL's poorer voters. Although he initially opposed collaborating with PSD and PND and thought that the Democrat Liberal cabinet should stay in office until the August 2020 elections, he and the Liberals ultimately supported the two parties' motion of no confidence against the Hop II cabinet and eventually brokered a coalition with PSD and PND and had his party participate in the Slobozeanu I cabinet, in which Ludovic serves as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs and National Defence.
Personal life
Ludovic usually lives in a villa in New Plușeni, although he also has a residence in the Unirea sector of Plușeni. Since June 2020 he is married to fellow Liberal politician Hortensia Purcel, the couple living together and having 3 adoptive children.
