The Chief of Staff (CS) is the second most senior member of the North American Armed Forces after the commander-in-chief, having primary responsibility for command, control, and administration of the forces, as well as military strategy, plans, and requirements. The position is held by a senior member of one of the main branches of the North American Armed Forces. The current Chief of Staff, since 20 April 2016, is Friedrich Albrecht.

Rank and command

The Chief of Staff follows in rank only the Commander-in-Chief, who appoints the CS and is the person from whom the CS receives his or her orders. In practice, the commander-in-chief—the North American monarch—typically acts only on the advice of his or her ministers, meaning the CS normally reports directly to the Minister of Defence.
