Richensland, officially known as the Most Serene Republic of Richensland (Malay: Republik Richensland; Chinese: 里钦斯兰共和国; Tamil: ரிச்சன்ஸ்லாந்து குடியரசு[a]) (MSR) is a micronation which claims territories in various continents and is bordered by Singapore, India and the United States as a result of said claims. As of 2022, Richensland has a population of nearly 80 people. The capital and largest settlement is Sjerelyslau, the seat of governance and Richensland's most important institutions. Nevertheless, majority of citizens live outside of Richensland's territorial claims and the nation is the only active micronation in Singapore.

Culturally, Richensland is diverse, with different ethnic groups coexisting without racial tensions. Richensland's official languages, English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil reflect this diversity. As a consequence, English is used as the lingua franca. Such a decision makes communication between the various ethnic groups easier.

Politically, Richensland is de jure simulationalist, in which the running of the nation is seen mostly as a hobby; it does not formally claim sovereignty or independence from its macronation of origin, but nevertheless engages in physical, "real world" activities such as meetings, elections, etc. Richensland does not recognize independence as an aim and does not hold any intent to be independent. Richensland has been accused for being a LARP state (Live action role-playing game) by Recanesia because of what land claims the nation holds, even though such claims were done in a way to make it obvious they were not serious for independence from their parent nation. Richensland is a member state of the Southeast Asian Micronational Association, Southeast Asian Micronations Games Federation, Micronational Olympic Federation, Alliance of the Micronations and the Islamic Micro-national Security Organisation.

Etymology

The name Richensland comes from the word 'rich' and 'land', literally implying that the nation had land which was rich. Originally called Koldova, a name change occurred after the establishment of Richensland. When translated into other languages in full, only part of the official name "Republic of Richensland" is translated. This is to ensure simplicity and accuracy of the transition as longer translations tend to be less accurate. A person from Richensland is called a 'Richenslandian' and can be called a 'Koldovian' in a colloqual manner.

History

Ever since its establishment, Richensland has been under a constant state of instability, including political instability. This was made worse in early 2021, most probably in January, when the Richenslandic Diplomatic Crisis started. This instability included possible coups, frequent regime changes, frequent changes of the constitution, abuse of power and many more. Although there has been no concrete end to the aforementioned crisis, which in part is part of a larger crisis, it can be presumed that Richensland almost does not have any feuds with foreign powers, although instability still lingers at a local level. Richensland was liberated from Cycoldian occupation on 5 December 2021, thus freeing Richensland from imperialism.

Origins

Aniq Sufyan founded the official predecessor to the first Richenslandic state, the Koldova Nation. Koldova had no government and lacked any features of a nation except for a flag. As it was only intended to be temporary and to be replaced by a well off micronation that was to be Richensland, it was more of an amateur micronational experiment to test out various methods of governance that would best fit his 'to be' micronation.

After experimenting with various system of governance, two most appealed to him. An absolute monarchy and a parliamentary republic, both in a unitary fashion. Eventually the former was chosen and was implemented in the Kingdom of Richensland. It was also in this period that the nation only had a population of 1 (from 2016 to 2018) later 2 (from 2018 to 2020), that was until he met S. Thanukshan as a childhood friend who apparently also had interest in such affairs and so helped Aniq build the Kingdom of Richensland and later served as the first prime minister and also served for 2 terms nonconsecutively and is regarded as a founding father of the nation and has from the nations founding until the present day, served as the nation's foreign and home minister, though real powers were with Aniq.

Laws and constitutions were not considered back then as the nation was not serious, so in their place, there was no law and law enforcement so an anarchy might have been the de facto government back then. As all micronations were, from the start, isolated. Koldova did not have any relations with any micronations what so ever. All that took a turn following the official Proclamation of the nation's establishment in 2020 which saw it less isolated and much more improved as a 'micronation' who actually had a government and laws.

Aniq operated Koldova from his bedroom and designated it as its de facto but not the official capital and claimed his parents' apartment then in Punggol as the de facto but not official territory of the nation, before moving to Richensland's present capital, Sjerelyslau in the second half of 2018, where his nation was based in.

Kingdom of Richensland

Koldova was reorganized on 13 August 2020 by a resolution issued by Aniq and Thanukshan. The resolution stated, "For that we resolve the creation of a micronation. A monarchy, the Kingdom of Richensland shall bless itself with a King". In this newly established monarchy, Aniq declared himself the monarch, taking the style of 'His Majesty' and ascending the throne of the nation as the first (and only) King of Richensland. Aniq appointed S. Thanukshan as the nation's first prime minister. During his reign, Aniq would take the premiership for himself, before passing it on to S. Thanukshan again. However, Aniq became prime minister again, before stepping down and handing the premiership to his younger brother, who became prime minister in an acting capacity for a day. He was succeeded by M. Ryan. Aniq's reign was also marked by political stagnation and slow population growth as a result of the isolation of the regime. On paper, Richensland was a constitutional monarchy with a King reserved with limited executive, legislative and judicial powers (albeit with discussion with the prime minister and cabinet). However, the nation operated as an absolute monarchy. The authority of the prime minister and cabinet was highly dependent on the King for legitimacy due to the absence on an institutionalized legislature.

Coup and transition

Aniq Sufyan in 2022

Then-incumbent prime minister M. Ryan staged a coup d'état on 3 November 2020. Relatively bloodless and peaceful, the coup took the form of a written declaration. This effectively meant the end of monarchy in Richensland and the establishment of republican government in the nation. The declaration, 78 words long, was signed by Ryan, Nayli Aleesya and newly overthrowned Aniq Sufyan. The new government of the newly formed republic resembled that of a transitional government. Tasked with transitioning the nation into a monarchy, former prime minister now president M. Ryan appointed Aniq Sufyan as vice president as governance seemed bleak without Aniq's help in the government. It should also be pointed out regarding Aniq's position of "Guardian Leader of the Nation", the patron of the nation's existence, which Aniq held concurrently since the nation's founding until 1 January 2022, where the position was replaced by the political office of the Chairman of the Council of Presidential Advisors.

M. Ryan would turn out as the second-shortest serving president. Serving for 15 days, he was outranked by 4th president Amelia Banks, who served for 8 days. Ryan was succeeded by his vice president Aniq Sufyan. Aniq appointed Nayli as his vice president and soon, appointed his cousin Rifqi Hanif as the nation's first prime minister since the coup. Nayli resigned from her position on 11 December 2020, after 32 days in office. To fill the vacancy, Aniq appointed Rifqi to the position. This was the first time in the nation that a person had held both offices of vice president and prime minister concurrently. A temporary constitution was drafted and approved on 8 January 2021. On 2 May 2021, Aniq issued Proclamation No. 862. This decreed the end of the temporary government and constitution and established a Directory of Richensland. Comprising 6 members, each member held different positions in government and were tasked with drafting a permanent constitution for the nation. In addition, the directory also functioned as collective heads of state. It was headed by a president. Aniq served as president of the directory, while also serving as Speaker of Parliament. Rifqi retained his position of vice president. This period of Richensland's history is known as the "First republic".

Second and third republic

The final draft of the constitution was adopted on 23 August 2021. Aniq stepped down on the same day. He was succeeded by vice president Rifqi Hanif. Aniq assumed the office of prime minister, a position he has held two times before. This was the start of the "Second republic".

Most of the history of the second republic was shadowed by a series of events- particularly the nation's dispute with the Grand Republic of Cycoldia. Richensland's parliament passed an act to allow Cycoldian involvement in the nation. The main goal of the arrangement was to oversee the nation's democratic transition. After a period of political instability and later transition to a democratically elected government, the incumbent Government of Aniq Sufyan requested the aid of the Grand Republic of Cycoldia, which request was granted with the formation of a colonial delegation and invitation to the Cycoldian Imperium as a partial member state. Soon after, tensions arose between the Richenslandian government and that of the Cycoldian delegation. Tensions began to emerge with the Richenslandian government over the question of monarchical titles. Imperial Order 2.7 as issue by the reigning house of the Grand Republic of Cycoldia stipulates for the title of a head of state of an Imperium realm be that of a monarch and not of a governmental or noble title for full integration to take place. However the government of Aniq Sufyan rejected such a notion and few days of negotiations ensued with the Cycoldian delegation. The matter was finally resolved by declaring by the Cycoldian delegation by suggest that Christina I of the Grand Republic of Cycoldia to be made monarch of Richensland in personal capacity as monarch of Cycoldia and its realms, rather than personally holding sovereign over Richensland.

Shortly thereafter another issue emerge over the question of civil rights between the Cycoldian delegation and the Richenslandian government. The Second Article of the Cycoldian Constitution provides that no discrimination be undertaken by any realm or sovereignty under the control of the Grand Republic of Cycoldia. The issues regarding civil rights emerged after the government of Aniq Sufyan published a statement desiring the implementation of sharia law in Richensland, which would endanger the civil rights of Cycoldian and any other individuals due to the curtailing of LGBTQ+ rights. The Cycoldian delegation expressed their desire against such a measure and requested such a notion be dismissed as to not compromise the civil rights of any Richenslandian citizens. Thereafter a public poll was published by Prime Minister Aniq Sufyan asking whether LGBTQ+ rights are to be expanded within Richensland. This action precipitated a break-off in relations on part of the Cycoldian delegation and resulted in the subsequent resignation of Prime Minister Aniq Sufyan for his role in the event. Christina I of the Grand Republic of Cycoldia in capacity as monarch of Richensland then appointed Arthur Lacey-Scott as provisional prime minister of Richensland in absence of any clear Richenslandian precedent for empty administrative posts. Though former prime minister Aniq Sufyan rebutted this claim and retracted his statement regarding resignation, thus precipitating another political crisis between Richensland and the Cycoldian delegation. Aniq Sufyan then released a statement barring any Cycoldian official or individual a place within the Richenslandian Discord server and retracted any attempt to negotiate with the Cycoldian government and the Cycoldian delegation. The Cycoldian government then released as statement supporting Arthur Lacey-Scott as de jure prime minister of Richensland in place of the now-disputed Aniq Sufyan. However, Christina's dominion as monarch of Richensland was not recognized by Aniq Sufyan's government. Thus, the appointment of Arthur Lacey-Scott as prime minister was not recognized. Aniq and his government passed an act of parliament on 22 October 2021 and went into exile, styling themselves as the "Government of the Most Serene Republic of Richensland in exile".

Animated "picture" of Bhuvan Pathuri

While in exile, the Lacey-Scott government remained relatively stagnant, while the Aniq government had political activity. The government had gone through various leadership changes. The office of president had been taken over by Aniq on 22 October 2021. Bhuvan Pathuri resigned from office that same day. He was replaced with Mullah Mujahid Al Wardasaqri. The position of prime minister was abolished a month later on 22 November 2021, further making Lacey-Scott's claim to office "illegitimate". Several months passed by. On 5 December 2021, the Aniq government and the cycoldians discussed and worked out an agreement. Mediated by Paloma, the treaty was signed on the same day and took effect immediately. The signing of the agreement signalled the end of Aniq's exile and return to normal in the nation. This event ushered in the start of the "Third republic". On 1 January 2022, the constitution was amended and revamped.

Nationsleep and stagnation

First page of Proclamation No. 9853

Aniq's decision to declare 'nationsleep" in Richensland on 3 June 2022 was due to the increasingly busy nature of citizen's lives. This meant that the nation would enter a deliberate state if inactivity while still being "active". Officeholders of political positions may still exercise their duties and functions. The proclamation, Proclamation No. 9853, had been signed a few days earlier, but Aniq chose for the proclamation to take effect on said date. The proclamation legally extended his term of office indefinitely until the lifting of nationsleep, where his term will continue for the remainder of his original six–year term.[1] The proclamation provided no date that nationsleep is to be formally lifted and any lifting of nationsleep will be done by Aniq's own prerogative. On 5 June 2022, Aniq's Richenslandic Development Party, Muslim Brotherhood of Richensland and the National and Progressive Party merged into the Richensland Party (RP). The merger agreement was signed on the same day. As Richensland is a one-party state, RP's Secretary–General Hasan Çakar is became de facto leader of the nation. A writ of election was issued on 6 June 2022, a day after the creation of the Richensland Party. The writ called for a legislative election to elect the 3rd legislature for the nation as well as the 1st convocation of the People's Representative Assembly (PRA). Aniq would also stand as a candidate under his party. The election happened for 5 days, from 10 until 15 June of that year. Results of the election were announced on 20 June 2022. Aniq's party attained a majority and Aniq was elected to the PRA.[2]

Politics

Organization

The ruling political party in Richensland is the Richensland Party (RP). It was created in June 2022 through a merger of the Richenslandic Development Party, Muslim Brotherhood of Richensland and the National and Progressive Party. Prior to the abolishment of one-party rule, the RP maintained a monopoly over the governance and day-to-day operations of the nation through article 10 clause 1 of the 2021 constitution. The leader of the RP– the Secretary–General of the Richensland Party served as de facto leader of the nation, though such arrangement was not inscribed in law.

However, the existence of other political parties were allowed and sometimes, encouraged regardless of ideological beliefs of individual parties. Nevertheless, every political party in the nation had to join the Popular Front, a broad coalition of parties and political organisations (though none joined), including the:

  • Progressive Monarchist Party (created 28 September 2021)
  • Shashan Dal (created 11 October 2021)
  • Republic Sedang Bergerak (Republic Progressing Forward, created 13 March 2022)
  • Richenslandic Development Party (created 23 August 2021, merged with the Richenslandic Development Party and Muslim Brotherhood of Richensland on 5 June)
  • In Pog We Trust (created 27 September 2021, dissolved 17 December 2021)
  • Conservative Party of Richensland (created 27 September 2021, inactive since 22 October 2021)
  • Global Islamic Union (created 11 October 2021, inactive since 14 December 2021)
  • National and Progressive Party (created 14 October 2021, merged with the Richenslandic Development Party and Muslim Brotherhood of Richensland on 5 June)
  • Muslim Brotherhood of Richensland (created 13 March 2022, merged with the Richenslandic Development Party and Muslim Brotherhood of Richensland on 5 June)

The member parties were almost completely subservient to the RP and had to accept its leading role in the nation's governance. However, the parties did have representation in the legislature and received some posts in the government.

According to law, Richensland is a republic under a presidential system with separate executive, legislative and judicial branches. The president is elected by popular vote for a non-renewable six-year term and is the formal head of state and chief executive of Richensland. Below the president are the vice presidents, elected to a six-year term that may be renewed once. The vice presidents deputise the president during the latter's absence. The vice presidents assume the presidency in the event of the president's removal, death, resignation, or inability. There are two vice presidents. The first vice president is usually the first to exercise the roles of both vice presidents. The first vice president is also the ex officio Head of the People's Representative Assembly. Should the office of first vice president be vacant or the first vice president absent, the second vice president assumes vice presidential duties. Both first and second vice presidents are equal.

The president heads the cabinet of Richensland. The cabinet consists of the president, both vice presidents, ministers and heads of cabinet-level departments. Ministers and heads of cabinet-level departments are appointed by the president without consent from the People's Representative Assembly. As a result, they may be removed by the president without cause.

The legislative wing of the government of Richensland is the People's Representative Assembly (PRA). Members are elected to an indefinitely renewable 2-year tenure. The People's Representative Assembly has the authority to legislate. There is no fixed number of seats in the People's Representative Assembly. Members are nominated by political parties or by self–nomination and as long as candidates are approved by a simple majority of voters in an election, he receives a seat in the People's Representative Assembly. All members represent the entirety of Richensland as a single constituency.

The judiciary is the Richenslandic Revolutionary Tribunal (RRT). Established on 3 November 2020, it consists of the Chief Justice and 2 other associate justices. It is the only approved and the only institution that may legally exercise judicial power. All judges are appointed by the president without consent from the People's Representative Assembly. The incumbent Chief Justice is Dhia Auni, serving since 3 November 2020.

The Constitution of Richensland was adopted and came into effect on 23 August 2021. The constitution is the supreme law of the nation. All other statutes of Richensland must not contradict the constitution or else, risk being void. The constitution was last amended on 1 January 2022.

State symbols

The flag of the Richensland consists of three horizontal stripes in the traditional Richensland colors black-white-orange. The national emblem of the nation consisting of a capital R in black, surrounded by a wreath of corn and corn plants. A book is also present. The nation anthem of Richensland is the "National Anthem". The music of the anthem came from Iraq's former anthem, Ardulfurataini.

Human rights

Richensland follows the drug policy of Singapore. Regulated by the Misuse of Drugs Act, the statute's penal provisions are severe by most nations' standards, providing for long terms of imprisonment, caning, and capital punishment. Richensland has passed its own law inspired and affirming of the Misuse of Drugs Act, the Misuse of Drugs Act of 2022, albeit not including provisions on punishments but instead referring to regulated drugs and leaving criminal cases of involving drugs to Singapore.

Article 1 clauses 23, 24 and 25 guarantee the right that everyone has the right to crossdress, to a sexual orientation and that all individuals may have the privilege of a change of gender once reaching their age of consent. Nevertheless, such legal provisions are minimally enforced.

Foreign policy

Diplomacy

Richensland informally recognizes all micronations. If a micronation wishes to establish formal relations and a treaty of friendship, it must be willing to adhere to the requirements. Exceptions cannot and will not be made. Requirement are stated as the following:

Not be a member of the Cycoldian Imperium or a micronation which supports Cycoldian imperialism
Be against islamophobia
Be against all forms of discrimination

If the requesting micronation fulfils the requirements, Richensland can begin to conduct diplomacy with the requesting micronation on the date it fulfils all of the above requirements or on a determined date that has been agreed upon by both sides. The requesting micronation is therefore eligible to sign a treaty of friendship and to initiate formal relations with Richensland immediately after it fulfils all the aforementioned requirements.

Military

People's Army

The People's Army of Richensland is the military of the nation, administrated and is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of State Security. The president is commander-in-chief of the military, and Rifqi Hanif serves as Minister of State Security. The People's Army only consist of one branch, there being no air force and navy. The People's Army is not a standing army as members are only recruited during times where war is inevitable. In addition, article 12 (Renunciation of war) provides that the nation shall not declare war or go to war. As a result, the People's Army has normally purely ceremonial functions. Article 12 also indirectly dictates that a strong military is unnecessary. The People's Army was established on 1 January 2022, with the promulgation of the nation's current revised constitution. It is the successor to the earlier Sigtelageecn, which consisted of the usual three branches of an armed forces but was abolished on 22 October 2021.

Economy

Richenslandic Valora 200 banknote

Richensland has a small planned economy. Though the nation has a de facto socialist economy, there are elements of capitalism that are present. The government is directly in charge of meme production, as well as the sale of NFTs and the production of propaganda, most of which are objects traded by Richensland to other micronations. Richensland is a non-profit micronation, thus, trade with other micronations are mostly free, a notable example being Richensland's meme trade. Richensland's meme trade happens through the National Bank of Memes, a government controlled state bank. The official currency is the Richenslandic Valora. However, the most used currency is the Singapore Dollar (mostly used in Richensland province) and the Indian Rupee (in Viskonia province and by most Indian citizens of Richensland), both is considered de facto, with the Valora a de jure because of its worthlessness.

Infrastructure

Public housing

Public housing dominates residences in Richensland. Apartment buildings are a common sight in the nation. Build by Singapore's Housing and Development Board (HDB), they dominate Richensland's skyline. Nevertheless, there are other housing in the nation not build and operated by the HDB, such as condominiums.

Richensland's official language is English, written with the Latin alphabet, which serves a the lingua franca of the nation. Most Richenslandians are bilingual, being able to speak English and their native tongue is a common practice in the nation. Signs, notices and anything similar are always printed or written in the four languages (English, Malay, Chinese and Tamil). In schools, Richenslandians are taught at least two languages. Although not mandated by the constitution, the nation (ranging from daily life to government) operates in the English language.

Religion

Sports

Richensland has Association football as the nation's national sport. Association football is also widely popular with citizens to the level of an unofficial de facto national sport. Other sports of interest include Cricket which is mostly played by the Indian communities. Richensland has also never had the chance to be represented in an intermicronational sports event as it does not have the budget and the logistics to do so can never be fulfilled by the nation. Thus, Richensland has never won a medal.

Culture

Cuisine

Local food items generally relate to a particular ethnicity – Chinese, Malay and Indian; but the diversity of cuisine has increased further by the hybridisation of different styles (e.g., the Peranakan cuisine, a mix of Chinese and Malay cuisine). In hawker centres, cultural diffusion is exemplified by traditionally Malay hawker stalls also selling Tamil food. Chinese stalls may introduce Malay ingredients, cooking techniques, or entire dishes into their range of catering. Richensland has a burgeoning food scene ranging from hawker centres (open-air), food courts (air-conditioned), coffee shops (open-air with hawker stalls), cafes, fast food and simple kitchens. Religious dietary strictures exist (Muslims do not eat pork and Hindus do not eat beef). Therefore, Richensland's cuisine is inspired by the cuisines belonging to the different ethnicities in the nation.

Festivals

There are some public holidays, festivities and ceremonies in Richensland.

Geography

This picture shows a rainy day in Singapore, as Richensland Province is located in Singapore, it experiences similar weather conditions.

The relative isolation of the area from the Downtown Core of Singapore meant relatively belated urban development and the greater abundance of natural greenery. Still, the region includes one of Singapore's largest new towns, Woodlands (otherwise known as Sjerelyslau). Largely grouped into three new towns, it houses 129,000 residential housing units of various types, although public housing tends to dominate.[16] Excluding naturally occurring green spaces, the region has 3 square kilometres of recreational spaces.

Climate

Richensland has a hot and humid climate. With no real seasons, Richensland experiences abundant rainfall during several months of the year. Therefore, it is almost always warm and wet. Despite that, that is somewhat only true for mainland Richensland, otherwise known as Richensland Province. As for Viskonia Province and Almendria Province, not much is known about the climate there, although it can be said that both experience daylight during the day.
