The 16th Lok Sabha is the current sitting of the Lok Sabha, the unicameral legislature of Vishwamitra and the legislative branch of the Government of Vishwamitra. It was formed by the members elected in the 2023 general election conducted by the Election Commission on 7 October 2022. The votes were counted and the results were announced on 8 October.
The National People's Congress received an majority winning 12 of the total 20 seats while the chief opposition Vishwamitran National Party won 4 seats. Four independents were also elected to the house, while an independent member was nominated by the Rashtradhyaksh.
The first session was summoned by the Rashtradhyaksh on 11 October 2023 which was presided over by protem Speaker Jayden Dagsa. During the session, newly-elected MPs took oath and on 12 October, Arsal Abbas Mirza was elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha while Dinesh Rajagopalan was elected as the Deputy Speaker.
Background
2023 general election
The 2023 Vishwamitran general election, initially scheduled for November 2023, was preponed and held on 7 October 2022. The outgoing 15th Lok Sabha was dissolved on 8 September 2023 on the advice of the council of ministers.
The election resulted in a return of the ruling National People's Congress party to power which won 12 of the seats, while the principal opposition party, the Vishwamitran National Party won 4 seats. Four independent candidates, who contested in support of the NPC were also elected to the Lok Sabha.
Timeline
- 8 October 2023: Results of elections are declared and 16th Lok Sabha is constituted through a gazette notification.
- 9 October 2023: Protem Speaker Jayden Dagsa took oath before the Rashtradhyaksh.
- 10 October 2023: First session of the 16th Lok Sabha took place; newly-elected MPs took oath.
- 11 October 2023: Independent MP Arsal Abbas Mirza unopposed elected Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
- 13 October 2023: VNP MP Dinesh Rajagopalan unopposed elected as Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
