The Marienbourgish Historic and Geographic Institute (Portuguese: Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Marienburguês), known by the acronym IHGM, is a public institution that promotes research and preservation of historical,geographical and cultural heritage, as well as social sciences in Marienbourg. Founded in 28 October 2024, it is modeled after its Brazilian counterpart. The IHGM operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Home Affairs, but is an autocephalous institution led by a head administrator elected by his peer members of the institution.

Goal

The IHGM has five distinct officcially defined objectives which it follows as guidelines:

  1. Historical Preservation and Research: Collect, preserve, and study documents, artifacts, and historical records that illustrate Marienbourg’s trajectory, covering periods from early colonization to contemporary times, promoting a comprehensive understanding of the nation’s past.
  2. Education and Cultural Dissemination: Organize educational programs, exhibitions, publications, and lectures to share historical and geographic knowledge with the general public, fostering national pride and identity.
  3. Mapping and Geographic Study: Develop and maintain a geographic database that records territorial, climatic, and cultural variations of the country, including urban development and natural resources.
  4. Support for Scientific Research: Support academics and researchers in studies related to the history, geography, and culture of Marienbourg, providing resources, grants, and access to archives and collections.
  5. Advisory Role in Public Policy: Act as a reference for the Marienbourg government on matters involving heritage, environmental preservation, and land use, advising on policies that impact historical and environmental areas.
