The Marienbourgish nobility (Portuguese: Nobreza Marienburguesa) is a social class and the peerage of the Duchy of Marienbourg. It consists of members of the immediate families of aristocrats who bear noble titlles, courtesy titles or honorifics. Proper nobles (suo jure) carry the titles of grand marquis, marquis, counts or barons. Marienbourgish peers are sometimes referred to generically as lords. Noble titles are granted and revoked solely at the Monarch's discretion. All titles are personal, lifelong and non-transferable, and their inheritance depends on the Sovereign's confirmation. The Constitution of Marienbourg mandates that nobles be treated in their own right as His/Her Grace. Traditionally nobles may be addressed as Lord/Lady followed by their names or the territorial designation of their title.
History
The Marienbourgish nobility was established through the Constitution of Marienbourg. Because Marienbourg has a Duke as Head of State, the system of nobility and peerage was adapted in its design to not include other dukes that could rival the Sovereign. In its place, the equivalent title of Grand Marquis was created, inspired by the rare title existing in Mauritia. Subsequent to the promulgation of the constitution, on 3 March 2023, the Sovereign Duke granted a decree, incorporated into the constitution by Act of Ammendment of the Ducal Diet on 5 March, by which the title of Seigneur as a courtesy title to those bestowed with knighthood in chivalric orders.
Privileges
Despite the democratic tradition of Marienbourg, the nobility, although legally not having any special rights in relation to commoners, do receive some privileges from the monarchy such as position in the order of precedence, the right to frequent the court, the right to participate in royal gala events and the right to to use coronets and supporters on their achievements of arms. All privileges of a noble are lost if a noble disclaims his or her noble title. A noble by marriage loses the privilege upon marrying a commoner but a noble suo jure does not. Individuals who hold courtesy titles, however, do not have such privileges by virtue of those titles.
Ennoblement
The Monarch is solely responsible for granting titles of nobility, being able to do so to citizens of Marienbourg and foreigners. In the absence or legal incapacity of the Monarch, the Regent assumes this role. Honors lists are regularly published at important events, however the Monarch can issue letters patent granting titles at will. The Monarch has the power to grant Arms to the titled nobility and exercises this power through a King of Arms. A grant of arms is in every regard equivalent to a patent of nobility; depending on jurisdiction and circumstances it can be seen as either an act of ennoblement or a confirmation of nobility.
Titles
The nobility of Marienbourg is loosely modeled on the nobility of Mauritia. The ranks of the titled nobility, although similar to those in European countries, have their idiosyncrasies. The titles granted are lifelong and hereditary, and the holder of the title cannot renounce it in favor of his heir without the consent of the Duke of Marienbourg. The Sovereign is the only person entitled to grant and revoke titles of nobility, being able to do so at will. Titles are inherited in absolute primogeniture.
