Gabriel Torres (Niterói, Brazil, 12 August 2001) is a Brazilian-born Marienbourgish politician. Member of the Ducal Diet, he founded and is the president of the Democratic Union, current opposition party in the Marienbourg parliament. A student of history, he became a prominent politician and micronationalist ideologue, pursued by his political convictions. Gabriel is a left-wing militant and considers himself a classic socialist, while also influenced by labourism, trotskyism and punk culture. He founded the Democratic Union six days following the enactment of the Constitution of Marienbourg and only two prior to the country's first elections, and his party had little success mainly because of that. Despite this, Gabriel was praised by the Duke Arthur V for his solid establishment of the ideological foundations of the Democratic Union in contrast to the frequent internal divisions of the Popular Party.

Biography

Early life and education

Gabriel was born in Niterói, Brazil, to a Portuguese-Brazilian father and a Brazilian mother. His full name is Gabriel da Silveira Torres e Castro. At an early age Gabriel began to be interested in music, mainly in genres derived from rock. As a teenager, he began to identify himself as a punk, to which his parents reportedly not only were not against it, but also supported him, especially his father, a scholar of the Spiritist doctrine. In 2021 Gabriel entered the degree course in history at University Estácio de Sá in Alcântara.

Political positions

Gabriel is a self-described socialist, often pursuing the socialism of the 21st century agenda such as political integration, direct democracy, progressivism and welfare politics. In political appearances, Gabriel defended the right to abortion, same-sex marriage, himself being openly bisexual, and minority rights. However, the politician is critical of what he calls the "exaggeration" of identity politics, arguing that they distract the working class from uniting for the purpose of class struggle and proletarian revolution. He is a stauncher supporter of the Brazilian Landless Workers' Movement and severely oppose to the large landowners who historically dominate the overwhelming majority of arable land in Brazil. According to Gabriel himself, his belief in peoples' right to self-determination was primarily what attracted him to micronationalism. Despite exercising a political function in a monarchy, Gabriel is openly republican, defending a Swiss-style directorial republic, but in a statement to the Ducal Diet, he said he does not necessarily have any problem with monarchies constitutional rights as long as royalty understands its place and social function.

Honours

As an Marienbourgish politician, Gabriel shall be addressed as The Most Worthy. He subsequently is a member of the following orders:
