New Scireland was a canton of Francisville bordering the US State of Maryland. New Scireland existed as a sovereign state from January 2010 until April 2011 following its independence from Sandus before joining the Federal Republic during the June Convention. The canton was dissolved along with the Federal Republic in November 2014.

History

New Scireland was a former territory of Baron of Sandus. The territory was officially established on 5 January 2010 following a request of charter by Cameron Falby to Baron Guillaume Soergel. New Scireland Declared independence from Sandus on 18 January 2010 and Sandus recognized New Scireland's declaration of independence two days later. New Scireland was dissolved by the Citizens' Council on 24 April 2011. The territory that comprised New Scireland was integrated into the Federal Republic of Francisville, forming the Canton of New Scireland. The new canton was accepted by referendum in January 2012, with the former Democratic Duchy of Francisville being divided between New Scireland and the larger canton of Wasserbrueck. New Scireland ceased to exist following the dissolution of Francisville on 14 August 2014.

Geography

New Scireland was bordered on all sides by the State of Maryland in the United States of America. The Nation functioned around and within Castle Hesperus, a residence which also served as the Embassy of New Scireland to the United States. Castle Hesperus was the Capital of New Scireland, acting as the meeting place of the Citizen's Council and the residence of the President. The building was named after the poem Wreck of the Hesperus by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Politics

New Scireland was a presidential republic and direct democracy. The President of New Scireland served as the elected head of government. The Citizens' Council comprising all citizens of the canton constituted the legislature and supreme court. At federal level, the canton was represented by one deputy in the Federal Chamber.

New Scireland was a unitary atate with no political subdivisions. For geographical and cultural purposes, the Canton was subdivided into the districts of Castle Hesperus and Scireland. These districts were not used as a level of political administration and all aspects of government were the responsibility of the cantonal government.

Culture

English was the official language of New Scireland whilst Scottish Gaelic and Italian were frequently spoken minority languages. New Scireland's culture placed a strong emphasis on classical music and the creative arts.
