|Awarded for||Public service|
The title of Knight Bachelor was the basic rank granted to a man in Vishwamitra who had been knighted by the monarch of Vishwamitra in recognition of his contributions towards the field of public service. Despite being a part of the Vishwamitran honours system, the knighthood was not directly granted upon an individual along with any order of chivalry or order of merit to which he had been appointed as a Knight Grand Cordon or Knight Grand Cross. A man who was knighted was formally addressed as "Sir [First Name] [Surname]".
This system was discontinued in July 2021.
Knighthood was usually conferred for public service; amongst its recipients included members of the cabinet, diplomatic staff, etc. who had been appointed to the nobility. Knighthood was not directly associated with any order of chivalry or merit under the Vishwamitran honours system and was not automatically granted to a recipient of an order to which he had been appointed in the grade of Knight Grand Cordon, Knight Grand Cross or Knight Commander or any equivalent grade. Discretion on the appointment of individuals were solely made by the Sovereign.
Honorifics and post-nominal letters
Knights Bachelor used to use the prefix "Sir" to their forenames. The knighthood entailed no post-nominal letters for use as most of the knights bachelor were inducted to various orders of chivalry and merit and henceforth bear the post-nominals of the orders.
This is a list of recipients who were knighted.
