The Kingdom of Salanda, referred colloquially as Salanda (Salandan (old script) Ćaüaméa /Salandan (simplified): Salanda), (Hebrew: סלנדה) is a nation and a self-proclaimed sovereign state. Salanda declared its independence from the United Kingdom followed by its formal establishment on 22 June 2018, a day which is now observed as Independence Day.[3]

The Salandarian mainland is located on the island of Great Britain, specifically in London. The mainland is completely landlocked within England and consists of five provinces as well as eight uninhabited territories. Buso Territory, Veavel and New Lucia are located in the mainland while the Negev Territory is located in Israel as well as Silavere which is also located far away from the mainland, and is landlocked as well, similar to Federalia which is landlocked in Spain. Rocks and stones, which are also part of the sovereign land of Salanda, together with the mainland make up the territorial integrity and landmass of the nation. The Salanda National Archives is very important for the history of the nation. The archives include Salandarian cultural artifacts, such as the constitution and passed legislation and is referred to as one of the most important pillars of the nation. However, it is not counted as territorial integrity rather the components and premises on which it is partially based on is considered a property of the Kingdom.[4] Salanda is primarily located in the United Kingdom, but it has claims in other countries.[5]

The current government of the nation is the Third Government of the Kingdom of Salanda. The national capital is Suveste. A planned capital, Cantaras, had been approved but its establishment has been scrapped, after being delayed, due to issues in the parliament and the re-evaluation of the benefits and costs. The name Cantaras has since been reused elsewhere in the nation.[6] The Tepoelan[a] is the bicameral legislature of the government of Salanda. The executive power of the government lies with the Prime Minister and the cabinet who are responsible for the governance of the nation. The Prime Minister is elected by the people and appointed by the Head of the Monarchy of Salanda, the ruling house of Salanda which is currently King Reuben I, who ceremonially rules over the nation. The nation has an ideological liberal democratic system [7] and has a significant culture. It has seen a generally stable population growth for a substantial amount of time.[8]

Salanda is the founding member of the Alliance of the Micronations (AOTM) [9] and is a full member state of the Grand Unified Micronational (GUM) and the International Aerospace Community.[10]

The name Salanda comes from the Salandan language. It is said to mean (the) Land of Diamonds.[b]

Prelude and establishment of the Kingdom of Salanda

Ever since the dissolution of the Kingdom of Ristabbita, around 2015, King Reuben I wished to establish another nation. After a long period of inactivity, Reuben I founded Salanda on 22 June 2018, which coincided with his 13th birthday. He proclaimed the establishment of the Kingdom of Salanda and determined that its form of government would be an absolute monarchy with him being the King and head of state of the nation. At that time, the nation had a single citizen which was the founder.

Initial period

Absolute monarchy (22 June 2018 – 1 November 2020)

Salandarian Forces capturing the Tuse Fort on 18 July 2018 in the Great Pillow War.

The Kingdom of Salanda was an absolute monarchy between 22 June 2018 and 1 November 2020. A few days following the establishment of the nation, King Reuben I decided to base his new nation on the territorial integrity of some technology that he owned. Also, he claim the property on which he resided as part of the nation in order to sway away from the grasp of simulationism. On 18 July 2018, external opposition started to grow and a former citizen, established a new sovereign state named Tuse which then declared war on Salanda. Salanda overcame the war and dissidence having won the decisive war called the Great Pillow War which also led to the dissident being placed under a period of suspension from Salanda.[11] In a period between July and December 2018, King Reuben worked on improving the nation in order to turn Salanda into a better and prosperous nation. He then decided to transform the Kingdom into an Empire on 1 December 2018. It was followed with Salanda experiencing major growth and the formerly dissident citizen re-joining the nation.

The year of 2019 was marked by strong growth for the nation with more institutions being established such as the Salanda Airspace Administration (established in early 2019) and the Salanda National Studios (established on 2 September 2019 as Cinecraft Studios).[12] The opening of these institutions helped to propel the nation. In 2020, aside from the Covid-19 Pandemic which greatly affect the nation by slowing down its growth, the nation managed to continue growing and to expand its institutions. This eventually led to Salanda’s population growing as a result of the expansions. However, by late October 2020, there were demands for the end of the absolute monarchy which finally led to King Reuben I assume the position of the first Prime Minister of Salanda.[13]

On 1 November 2020, the Empire was dissolved and the Kingdom was re-established and the absolute monarchy came to an end in the process. The next day, on 2 November, the basic foundation laws of the Kingdom were established and a democracy under a constitutional monarchy was proclaimed with King Reuben I becoming the first prime minister. King Reuben I formed a coalition on 1 November 2020 with the Tuse Salanda Party.[c] His victory in the 2020 Salanda elections confirmed his Premiership.

First Government of Salanda

In order to help the formation of the First Government, Tuse rejoined Salanda, with the government being formed by King Reuben I, as the prime minister, and the Tusean delegation. The First Government was formally inaugurated on 1 November 2020. It was called the Provisional Government and had an uncodified constitution. Another election was held on 19 November 2020,[14] to confirm the new Government giving it the name of ‘First Government’ with confidence from the people. Under the First Government, Salanda experienced major economic growth and development as well as established relations with other fellow nations. During this time, a growing unpopularity with the Aimsworth Communist Party, since here were allegations of illegal happenings within the Party, led the people to hold a referendum to ban the Aimsworth Communist Party to which all citizens voted for. This event boosted the First Government’s popularity as the First Government’s manifesto mentioned tackling corruption. The nation also became very stable and experienced an influx of citizens during that time. The desire of Tuse to regain its independence, lead to the First Government collapsing on the 19 June 2021. This was followed with an election being held, in which Solomon K defeated King Reuben I to become the next prime minister. The Second Government was formed on 20 June 2021 which marked the dissolution of the First Government of Salanda.

Second Government of Salanda

The Second Government was established on 20 June 2021,[15] under the leadership of Prime Minister Solomon K. He was elected to the office following his victory in the 2021 general election. The second government had been instrumental in enacting policies stabilising Salanda and continuing the growth of the nation, during this period Tuse voluntarily rejoined Salanda to become a part of Salanda, first as an autonomous community and the became Tuse Province as it remains today. The government was widely credited for transferring Salanda into a more outward and structured nation. This had been done by establishing more diplomatic relations as well as governmental institutions such as the Salanda Land Trust and transforming the uncodified basic laws of the constitution into a codified constitution which has been widely approved by the people. This contributed to enhance the government's popularity. Solomon K resigned as Prime Minister of Salanda on the 27 February 2023, he was replaced by Samuel B as Prime Minister of Salanda who led the Second Government of Salanda into the 2023 General Election of Salanda. This same government created the framework for the integration of the old Federalian state as a new territory on the 24 April 2023. The Second Government of Salanda was automatically dissolved on the 23 July 2023, following the 2023 Salanda general election.

Current period

Third Government of Salanda

The Third Government of Salanda was formed on the 23 July 2023, with the Solo Party and Federalian Nationalistic Party entering into a coalition following the 2023 Salanda general election, Samuel B the leader of the Solo Party remains the Prime Minister of Salanda with Eric Darkgoat, the leader of the Federalian Nationalistic Party became Chancellor of the Exchequer of Salanda succeeding Yekutiel A.

Government and politics

The front cover of the Salanda Basic Foundation Laws constitution

With the imminent collapse of the absolute monarchy, a commission was put together in order to discuss the establishment of democracy in the nation. Under the commission, a committee was established in order to draft a constitution for Salanda. After multiple drafts, a constitution was created, named as the Basic Foundation Laws. However, during this time, the main committee was divided into several sub-committees and the final product resulted in an uncodified constitution which was used between 2 November 2020 and 13 October 2021 with no amendments being initiated. Though the constitution provided stability to the newly democratic nation, by September 2021, the Supreme Court feared that the constitution could be lost as it was not codified. The current version which has been into force since 13 October 2021 has since undergone eighteen amendments with its latest amendment being on the 23 April 2023. It also lists the nation's culture, procedures of the monarchy, as well as listing how the branches of the government were to function. It also defines Salanda as a liberal democracy and ensures the freedom and rights including the freedom of speech until harm and the right to vote and contest elections.

Royal Standard of the Monarch of Salanda.

Salanda is a constitutional monarchy where the role of the monarch is primarily limited to that of a ceremonial ruler with no actual authority over the government and day-to-day functions of the state. The King represents the nation at the international level including conducting diplomacy with other nations and being part of several organizations. The current monarch is King Reuben I who has been on throne since the establishment of the nation on 22 June 2018.

Despite being a constitutional monarchy, it is of great importance and reverence for the people of the nation. It is also referred to be one of the founding pillars of the Kingdom. As the royalty of Salanda is intertwined with the Salandarian mythology, the monarch is often seen to wear the Star of Salanda necklace on special occasions including Independence Day. Within Salandarian mythology, the object is viewed to be very important and as an object of utmost courage and strong leadership.

The Cabinet Executive Group, this is where the executive is supposed to discuss with the cabinet, though nowadays discussion with the Cabinet is done on a one on one basis.
An example of the Prime Minister approving an Executive Order proposed by a Cabinet Minister.

Salanda is a unitary parliamentary constitutional monarchy under a stable democracy granting full voting rights to all its citizens. Citizens elect a candidate as Prime Minister who is the head of the executive. The candidate who wins the election is appointed formally by the Monarch as Prime Minister of the nation to serve their tenure in office. The term is of two years and can be renewable should they win again. There are no term limits for the office of the Prime Minister as described in the basic foundation laws. Salanda is regarded by its populace as a traditional liberal conservative nation.

The current government is the Third Government of Salanda which is headed by Prime Minister of Salanda Samuel B and it was established after the 2023 Salanda general election. All executive orders are issued by the government and do not need any approval from the King as the constitution describes the position of the monarch to be that of a ceremonial head of state with little or no interference in the executive and administrative functions of the state.

The Chamber of Provincial Emissary of the Tepoelan seating composition following the 2023 Salanda general election held in July and By-election held in November 2023.

The Tepoelan also known as the Parliament of Salanda is the bicameral legislature and is the organ within the Legislative branch of the government. It is currently composed of eleven seats. Eight seats are held by the Solo Party and three seats by the Federalian Nationalistic Party which makes up the Third Government of the Kingdom of Salanda. Three seats are held by the Salanda Great Military Party, the official opposition party. One seat is held by the GLP Party which is also part of the opposition, the GLP Party had two seats however one seat was vacated and not filled thus triggering a by-election which was won by the Solo Party giving them an extra seat in the Chamber of Provincial Emissary of the Tepoelan. In addition, a seat is reserved for the Speaker of the Chamber of Provincial Emissary of the Tepoelan, however it is not counted as an official seat since the Speaker does not belong to any political party. In the Second Government, the nation looked into the possibility of expanding the number of seats in the parliament for a better representation of the people, which was enacted by three Acts of Tepoelan. The Tepoelan meets a few times a month and all legislation passed by the Tepoelan is signed by the Monarch.

Salanda’s parties cover a broad spectrum of political parties ideologies and had a stints of a left wing period follows by a predominately right-wing conservative stint. One example of this, is how the people feared the Aimsworth Communist Party which has since been outlawed in the nation. The party threatened to destroy the structure of the nation with its policies which was a basis serving upon the conservative idealism in Salandarians. Recently, there as been an up spring as a new branch of liberalism started to spread through the nation culminating in a new left wing party known as the Federalist Party of Salanda. The party has a new outlook on many policies of the nation and won one seat in the Salanda 2022 July By-election series.[16]

The Supreme Court of Salanda is the highest judicial body and the sole organ of the judicial branch in the government. It supervises the executive and legislative branches. The judges of the court are chosen by the people through a majority secret vote and are then formally appointed by the monarch. They look after the cases forwarded to them and refer to the constitution while delivering judgments needed to execute the law. If the people are not satisfied with the verdict, they can petition for a way and also petition to change the judge if needed.

Political Parties of Salanda

There are currently four political parties in the nation with seats in the Tepoelan in the upper chamber called the Chamber of Provincial Emissary. The Solo Party (SP), a predominantly right-wing nationalist party, with the majority of seats in the Chamber of Provincial Emissary. The Tuse National Party (TNP), a centre-wing party with minority interests and regionalism policies and the official opposition party. It became the official opposition party following the Solo Party’s May 2022 by-election victory and the Cleansden Party’s defeat in the Salanda 2022 May By-elections. The Federalist Party of Salanda (FP), a left-wing party focused on the ideological values of Federalism with one seat in the Parliament. The party gained one seat in the 2022 July By-election series following the expansion of the Tepoelan from five to eventually eleven seats. And the Federalian Nationalistic Party (FNP), a centre-left-nagionalistic-wing party major interest on nationalistic ideas on the region of Federalia. It was established in 2023 and debuted in the 2023 Salanda General Election (shown in the chart below) that took place on the 18-21 July 2023.

Foreign relations and policy

The Salanda flag and Israeli flag side by side.

Salanda maintains both formal and informal relations with several other nations as well as having non-resident embassies in most of these nations. Salanda is the founding member of the Alliance of the Micronations and is also a member of the Grand Unified Micronational (GUM) as well as a member of the International Aerospace Community.

Salanda recognises most member states of the United Nations and some non-member states as well as ‘’de facto’’ recognition of member states of the Alliance of the Micronations. It also recognizes Bougainville due to both parties recognising their independence referendum with no controversy.

The policy for the establishment of relations with the Kingdom of Salanda is listed below as published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  • Salanda grants full de jure recognition to micronations that have formal ties and have signed a treaty with them.
  • It is willing to establish diplomatic ties with any micronation that respects the culture of Salanda.
  • It also has extremely close informal ties with Israel due to their shared culture which should be taken into account.

The nation refuses to have diplomatic relations if the conditions are not realised. The current government also keeps the matter of sanctioned micronations away from public eye and is also very secretive about its sour relations with some other sovereign states. As of July 2022, only two officials are publicly known to have been sanctioned by the nation. All other sanctioned states or individuals are kept on an undisclosed list.

The Kingdom of Salanda is a signatory of the following treaties:[17]

Defence force

Salanda has a defensive agency named STADAL which acts as the nation’s defence force and is legalised under the Constitution. Although there are no current threats to its sovereignty, the Kingdom of Salanda likes to monitor the airspace above its land where it carries out monitoring patrols with the help of the Salanda Airspace Administration. The administration, which was established on 14 April 2019, has the mandate to monitor the Salandarian airspace.[18] Salanda does have secret services which are under the STADAL agency to monitor threats. Being a part of the Union Against Micronational War, Salanda is currently not part of any ongoing wars or conflicts. It hopes to have permanently withdrawn from all wars and does not plan to start one. The Kingdom of Salanda plans to stay neutral in all conflicts or disputes however it can display its support for certain nations at time. Currently the STADAL agency is used for ceremonial purposes only such as, commanding parades and raising of the flag of Salanda in parades though it can act to defend the Kingdom of Salanda in times of need.

The terrain of Salanda in Great Britain tends to be quite flat with some hilly parts. The Negev Territory’s terrain is much more rugged though there are some flat areas as well. The Kingdom of Salanda is considered a transcontinental country as the Salandarian Mainland and the Negev Territory are on two different continents.

Some notable sights of interest in the Kingdom of Salanda are its flat plains and gardens as well as the general landscape of the Salandarian Mainland. The Negev desert is also a notable site of interest due to its terrain and natural landscape as well as the sky above it.

Sovereign land and claims

Salanda claims the land of its citizens, which are in the United Kingdom, and the Negev Territory in Israel. The Kingdom hopes this is a temporary claim and aims to purchase permanent land that it is habitable and can fully support the Kingdom’s needs. Salanda is based on its claimed lands as well as other elements which forms its territorial integrity.

The sovereign land of Salanda.

Salanda is made up of five provinces with full control and sovereignty over them. It also has some land of its citizens which they live on. On 18 July 2021, the Kingdom of Salanda established the Salanda Land Trust which buys land for the Kingdom of Salanda. It also protects the land and keeps it environmentally friendly for all, which includes all of the Kingdom’s sovereign land.[19]

All Salandarian provinces are on sovereign land. Rocks and stones that are part of the provinces and territories of the nation and which were for representation purposes remain a part of Salandarian provinces to this day. The provinces and territories of the Kingdom of Salanda make up the nation’s territorial integrity.

The Kingdom of Salanda has four sovereign territories which are also known as Salanda Royalties in the nation. These territories are:

Culture and religion

The guitar used by the Salanda National Symphony Orchestra also known as the Guitar of Salanda and the King Reuben I Guitar.

Salanda's key national foods are the chocolate éclair and Chicken soup, considered a reflection the the nation's Jewish heritage and its cusine.

Salanda’s national animal is the Collared dove which represents the ideological views of Salandarians which are to establish peace with whoever they can.The national fruit and its tree are the Orange fruit and tree which are reminiscent of orange, a national colour of Salanda.

The flag of Salanda is an orange-white-orange vertical tricolor, with a yellow sun, two myrtle branches, and a red diamond. The red diamond was chosen because of its rarity in relation to Salandan beliefs portraying Salanda as a nation of unmatched rarity and beauty.

Salanda uses four different calendars, the Hebrew Calendar for the state religion, the Salandarian calendar for the culture, the Tuse calendar for the autonomous provinces of Tuse and Moonstone, and the Gregorian calendar for daily life and business in the nation. The national anthem is Our Great Kingdom, while the state anthem is Israel's national anthem, Hatikvah.[d] Hatikvah is used due to Salanda’s cultural ties with Israel.

Religious objects of Judaism.

The state religion of the Kingdom of Salanda is Judaism. Salandarians are very religiously observant and attend Synagogue. Judaism is greatly intertwined with the culture of the Kingdom of Salanda. Judaism has lots of cultural influence on the Kingdom of Salanda and most of its cultural dishes all stem back to Jewish culture and heritage.

Music is very popular in the Kingdom of Salanda. Established on 1 March 2022, the Salanda National Symphony Orchestra, an umbrella organisation formed from the merger of previous organisations, is an important organisation for the promotion of music in Salanda. The orchestra produced its first piece on the day of its establishment called ‘Midnight’s Rain’. The piece is a short segment of guitar music with low soft notes. The Salanda National Symphony Orchestra plans on performing more pieces and purchasing more equipment.[20]

Salandarians mainly speak English, and it is the government's working language. Salanda has several other official languages, Hebrew, Spanish and Salandan. Hebrew is mainly used for Jewish purposes such as the Hebrew calendar. Spanish is mainly used because of cultural practices of many Salandarians, however, it does not have an official purpose other than being an official language. Salandan, the constructed language of the Kingdom of Salanda, is used for ceremonial purposes and is not used on a day to day purpose. The current government is working to make a new Salandan simplified script for day to day use.[21]

Mythology and symbolism

Salandarians believe in a war between Salanda and a foreign enemy, this mythical event is referred to as the “Battle of Orange”, in which the native people managed defeat the invaders twice in a miraculous victory and regained control of the island they lived on. After this war, the Salandan people created a flag with orange as the only two color available, resulting in the Salandan tricolor with two stripes of orange for each victory against the invaders. In Salandarian mythology, Salanda is personified as a warrior that fights for and defends its people.

Salanda means Land of Diamonds in Salandan and it represents the unique status of the Kingdom. The nation’s flag has a lot of symbolism. The two orange stripes represent its two mythological victories. The sun represents the fact that Salanda is shining out its very good traits of her people on the world. The two myrtle branches symbolises peace. The red diamond, since it is the rarest diamond, symbolises the Salandarian people’s good deeds. Salandarians also use the name Salanda as an acronym to symbolise its power.

The Salandarian Independence Day is on the 22 of June, which is celebrated on the same day the Kingdom was established. The national holidays of the Kingdom of Salanda and the Jewish holidays are highly regarded as an important time for many Salandarians to come together.

Demographic changes have been happening a lot since many people have joined the Kingdom of Salanda. The trend is still growing rapidly and it is expected that Salanda will have more citizens in the following years. Many Salandarians come from very ethnically mixed background and many are ethnic Jews, with a lot of the nation’s population coming from the Ashkenazi Jews, Mizrachi Jews and Sephardi Jews. There are a minority of citizens who are from different cultures and religions.

Salandarian citizenship was previously split into two categories: “Standard”, known as half citizenship, and “Exemplary”, also known as full citizenship. Half citizenship was obtained from the nation's official Discord server after filling out an application form in circumstances. This enabled the right to vote and run in elections. Full citizenship was given only by the will of Salanda and enabled the same rights as that of half citizenship as well as the right to own Salandrian land. They were both counted in the Kingdom’s population census and Salandrian citizenship could be revoked at any time by Salanda’s ministry for the interior.

Full citizenship came with a passport and the Salandarian Government had worked on ways to advance the process. However, since there was not a lot of activity, especially with Half Citizenship, the Salandarian Government scrapped the two categories and replaced it with the single Salandarian Citizenship. This was formalised by the Salandarian Activity Act of 2022, which was passed on 18 March 2022. The act also simplified the citizenship application process and relaxed it allowing people to apply for citizenship on institutions such as the nation’s Discord server for example.[25] On the 23 April 2023, the Salandarian Activity Act of 2022 was integrated into the Eighteenth Amendment of the Constitution of Salanda (Basic Foundation Laws of Salanda), thereby reinforcing its contents and implementing of the Act.

The official currencies of Salanda are the Salanda coin, Microcredits, Israeli shekel, Euro and the British Pound although all four are the official currencies, the British Pound is the main working currency of the nation.[26]

All the four provinces of Salanda rely on agriculture and tourism for their local economy. The Suveste Province has the strongest provincial economy, by far, of all the provinces mainly because of the national capital being located in that province. The nation heavily relies on importing produce and cosmetics as well as electronics. Its main import partner is the United Kingdom which is also the nation’s largest exporting partner. After a brief review on the nation’s finances by the Salandarian Government in July 2021, the Kingdom of Salanda opened itself up to tourism. Although it had done so before, it was never official and those who wanted to visit needed a permit from the Salandarian Government. On the 9 July 2021, the Kingdom of Salanda officially opened a Ministry of Tourism department for anyone wishing to visit the nation.[27]

Salanda hopes to diversify its economy by working on its media and technology sector. It also hopes to work on a merchandising sector and a commissioning sector where customers could buy things from the nation, such as souvenirs, as well as get commissions for media and technological help. The Kingdom believes that this will help fuel its economy and further its growth and expansion. Salanda also wishes to expand the growing music sector in the nation with projects in development to bring it as an integral part of the nation’s economy.[28]

Northern line train on the London Underground network.

There are no internal transport networks within the nation. For travel purposes, Salanda is serviced by the London Underground and buses. Salanda, unlike its neighbouring country of the United Kingdom, drives on the right though it does uses the system of miles per hour like the United Kingdom, though this right hand driving system mandated by Salandarian law has not had any significant impact in Salanda given that Salanda has not constructed such an infrastructure to facilitate a right hand driving capacity which is due to Salanda’s capacity and size not being large enough yet to handle such infrastructure.

Education and Research

UN sustainable development program.

The Kingdom of Salanda is working on expanding its science and technological industries as well as its cultural sectors. It plans to do this by introducing cultural programs that will expound upon the nation’s culture and history and will be available for citizens and non-citizens alike. It also plans on expanding the Salanda National Studios to work on new films and commercial projects. Furthermore, the nation is working on expanding its science and technology sector and investing in research and development for new scientific projects.

The Kingdom of Salanda also aims to be an environmentally friendly nation by the year 2030. It is currently aiming for the objectives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 having set these objectives on 7 November 2021.[31]

The Kingdom of Salanda operates a YouTube channel [32] showcasing its culture. It also plans to launch news from the Salandarian Times on its YouTube channel as well as for producing films. The Salanda National Studios is currently working on producing a film as well.

Salanda does not have any data about freedom of the press since no newspapers have ever visited the Kingdom. Its national newspaper, the Salandarian Times, is state owned. It is generally said to be unbiased and is read by many Salandarians. It has been criticised for provoking nationalistic feelings into Salandarians, which, according to the Tuse National Party, has made tensions rocky from time to time with its neighbours. Overall, the newspaper is regarded as a good newspaper to read by Salandarians and it has tried to be critical of the Salandarian Monarchy and of the Government to improve its standards.
