Royal cyphers

Upon coronation, the monarch will be presented its royal cypher. These are usually designed with a tudor crown, with the letter of their regal name, followed by a regal number, then 'R' for rex or regina. For example, the cypher for John I would be stylized as IIR.

Within the letters-patent which styles one as a prince, at the bottom right will show the prince's new cypher. These are usually designed with a princely coronet without the circlets and cap. For example, the cypher for John, Prince of Kingston would be stylized as I.

Combined cyphers

Combined cyphers also exist where the cyphers of two persons are intertwined. For example, the dual cypher of the Duke and Duchess of Kingston was an intertwined IS, prior to their divorce.
