Aethodia (English: /ɛˈθ.di.ə/ (listen); Aethodian: ʼái-fo-tya, tr. Aifodia, IPA: /ˈʔaj.fo.tja/ [ʔái.βo.ḏ͡ʒa] (listen)), officially the Technocratic Republic of Aethodia in English, is currently an internationalism and a micronation, and is composed of an online provisional government, a hypothetical culture, and a land claim in eastern Greenland; but it seeks to eventually become a sovereign fœderation of cantons governed at the national level by a lottocratic Technocracy. It was founded in Neapolita on 22 April 2010 as a kingdom; it became a republic in July 2013; and its current provisional government was declared on 28 June 2015. The country has a medium Dresner-Linden score and, due to its lack of controlled territory, a low Economic Potential Index.

Aethodia is a vehicle for effecting change outside the frameworks of pre-existing governments and societies, by leaving them and starting anew. This allows the project to experiment with concepts that could never be grafted onto older societies. A core idea of the project, is that pre-existing governments and societies are generally incapable of resolving the issues of today and tomorrow in a timely or competent manner, due to them being patchwork constructs plagued by path-dependence. These old-pattern societies are often seen as beyond hope of repair, and because of this many Aethodians have lost all faith in their host macronations' political systems. Even some of Aethodia's simplest reforms (approval voting) would be de facto impossible in many such societies.

Aethodia is renowned for its novel implementation of Technocracy, which uses representative sampling to select members of government. Aethodia is also known for its unorthodox stances on many policy issues, with it adopting such things as Interculturalism[2] and a kind of Distributism. Aethodia has taken substantial inspiration from modern software development processes, and the country's legislation is accordingly 100% Open Source and hosted on GitHub. Aethodia is also heavily nomocratic, and aspires to make de jure as many de facto policies as possible, so that all of the society's rules and paradigms can be developed explicitly. Politically, Aethodia lies solidly within the radical center, and nearly every aspect of Aethodian society, including the language, has been or is being carefully rethought and reworked from the ground up.

The hope is that Aethodia may serve as inspiration for (or even outright become) the governments of future Moon, Mars, or Seasteading colonies. Even so, Aethodia maintains a claim on Jamesonland in Eastern Greenland, a lush, unpopulated area that the Danish government is open to investors developing.[3] Aethodia also allows interested polities to self-determine into its jurisdiction, a relatively novel means of expansion.

The word "Aethodia" is an Anglicization of "Æþōdia", a blend of three morphemes: "æthēr", *"þeód", and "-ia". The first of those, "æthēr", comes from Latin, and means many things; chief among them, "the heavens".[4] The second is *"þeód" — a cross between Old Norse "þjóð"[5] and Old English "þēod",[6] both of which meant "nation" or "people". The last, "-ia", is a general latinate suffix connoting "region" and "country" in modern English. Taken together, these three terms mean something along the lines of "Heavenly Nationia", or "a nation out of this world".

The country was officially known as the "Kingdom of Theodia" from its founding in 2010 until mid-2013, when it became known as the "Republic of Theodia", which was its official name until the name-changes of late 2015 and early 2016, after which it became known as "The Free Cities of Theodia". Its name was again changed in 2017, to "The Technocratic Republic of Theodia". On 22 April 2022, Theodia's twelfth birthday, it was announced that the country would be rebranding as "Aethodia".

The demonym, adjective, and language all use the form "Aethodian". A name change was proposed sometime in 2011 in part to create unique forms for each of these in English, but it was ultimately decided to keep the original name of "Theodia". A similar but less dramatic proposal was made sometime in 2015 to change the English adjectival form to "Theodic", but this proposal only succeeded in renaming the script and the language family of which Theodian was a part. It wasn't until 2022 that a complete name change succeeded.

History

A lot has happened since Aethodia's founding in 2010 as the Kingdom of Theodia, and much of it can be found below, either in the sections themselves or in the full-sized articles they link to. An alternative model of specifically Theodian history can be found in the form of the Flag Model, which used to be the dominant way of looking at Theodian history before the rise of the era model that you see below.

Foundation

Aethodia, originally "Theodia", was founded as a kingdom by Swena. The traditional date of foundation for the monarchy is 22 April 2010, and the wave of innovation triggered by Theodia's connections to Underwoodia occurred after June in 2011; which means this period of Aethodia's history occurred during and between the Lethler and Post-Lethler eras of the MicroWiki community, at a time when the macronational world was in the middle of the Great Recession.

Theodia's foundational raison d'être was to create a society with a strong work-ethic and monoculture. Swena had considered the former to have largely disappeared in America, and the latter to be a solution to the problems of multiculturalism, something he saw as a dysfunctional corruption of the melting pot paradigm. Along with Theodia, Swena posited his tripartite approach to creating a society, namely (1) the creation of a national language, (2) the creation of a national religion, and (3) the creation of a national culture. The name Swena eventually chose for the country, Theodia, was seen as representative of both the country's aspirations of nation-statehood, and the country's emerging Germanic culture, as the word "Theodia" derives from the Old English word "þēod", meaning "nation".

After discovering MicroWikia and considering it to be the premier locale for a new micronation to manage its affairs, Swena began publishing wiki articles about Theodia on 23 May. Swena sought, from the start, to present a professional face for the country, as well as to quickly develop all of its official capacities as a state; but his primary goal was on the completion of the first component of the tripartite approach: the development of a national language. The language was, at the time of the country's founding, known as "Þeodspraask", and was intended to optimize the thought of its speakers. Theodia quickly became known for the language's broad scope, as Swena's continuous editing of the language's article throughout the summer of 2010 kept it at the top of the wiki's activity log.

During this period, Theodia laid claim to Amstria, Neapolita, and Nordia. Neapolita served as the country's capital, being the domicile city of all of Theodia's then-citizens; but the eventual goal was to develop the country in Amstria (the isle of Île Amsterdam).

Swena sought to jumpstart the Theodian economy via pineapple production, as he saw agriculture as being a clear first step towards the development of a functional economy. A physical national currency was developed, but was never used as a medium of exchange. It was known first as the "Thennar", a name inspired by the currency in the videogame Mount&Blade; and its symbol, which has remained effectively unchanged to this day, was "ꝥ" — the letter Thorn with a stroke, once used to represent Old English "þæt" in manuscripts.[7]

Theodia, at this time, was very open to participating in international relations, and became lightly diplomatically involved in a number of incidents. It condemned the Istorian declaration of war against Erusia, Lethler's fraudulency, the Atlantis Civil War, and Istoria's closing of its borders to non-Christians. Theodia also supported the maintenance of the Draco Republic article and, initially, declared diplomatic support for the rebels in the Starlander Civil War — but later withdrew this support after receiving superior intel. It co-founded the Runic Union along with West Germania, and later hosted the Union's first Althing. Towards the end of this period, Theodia, after defending its position on monoculturalism, joined the OAM, and participated in the controversy over New Guinea's membership therein. In total, Theodia exchanged mutual recognition with 20 other micronations.

In October 2010, feeling that he had a schedule to keep, Swena declared a constitutional convention that he was unprepared for. When the convention came to an end, Swena enacted an incomplete constitution on 2010, October 23rd and, in an effort to stave off oncoming inactivity, declared Theodia's American claims to be independent from the USA on October 22nd of the same year[8] — though this had little de facto effect, and Theodia did nothing to enforce its sovereignty over its American claims. Despite this, the country still ultimately descended into a several months' long bout of inactivity. When Theodia returned in early 2011, Swena declared the occasion to be a rebirth of the country into a golden age, and subsequently changed the flag to a mixture of orange and yellow.

The country's first political innovation was the development of "elemental" parties. Its second was the development of a system designed to tax members of religions which were considered to be significantly different from the majority religion, so as to encourage conformity and stability; this system was inspired by the jizya tax of medieval Islam. These ideas were formalized during the second constitutional convention.[9]

Transition

Aethodia's iconic
hex-gear symbol
was developed
during this period.

The "transitional" period of Aethodian history is considered to have started when Theodia and Underwoodia became connected in July 2011, and to have ended shortly before the declaration of the provisional government in May 2015; which means this period of Aethodian history occurred during and between the Post-Lethler and Polarised eras of the MicroWiki community.

During this period, Theodia drifted away from its nationalistic origins, gradually eschewing tradition in favour of innovation. It is this transition from foundational Theodia to the beginnings of modern Theodia, that this era's name refers to. This trend began a little before Axel Nielson joined the country, and he played an instrumental role in its continuation, in spite of his early death. Ultimately, the Transitional Era was both a time of great progress and a time of great sorrow.

Significant efforts were taken to rethink society at a fundamental level, especially where governance was concerned. Work began on a programming language designed specifically for writing legislation (GOV), a new constitution was theorized, and a micronational think tank – the Society for the Improvement of Humankind (SIH) — was created.[10] Even Theodia's name was rethought, with there being a proposal to change it to "Dautschland" — although this ultimately failed to gain traction. It was also during this time that Theodia's now-iconic hex-gear was created and placed on the flag, with its spokes being inspired by Sakio.

The most influential developments of the SIH were the application of the software release cycle to legislation and the replacement of bills with codeces, ideas that have stuck with Theodia to this day, and at the time lead to the creation of Repositocracy as a novel form of legislature. The SIH also developed the concepts of "modlevels" and "optlevels", which were respectively intended to provide fallback modes and to set how much approval/research was needed to change a policy. Work was also done on improving the school system, work which was spearheaded by Axel and received substantial assistance from Swena. Hundreds of lines of GOV code were written for a new constitution that took these ideas into account, but the work was never finished.

This era also saw the adoption of dozenal and ternary as Theodia's mathematical and logical bases, respectively. This prompted Swena to develop a new system of measurement which was dozenal-friendly. Pairdat exposed Theodia to the concept of amoury, which was later adopted nationwide. And the Theodian language changed a lot: its lexicon became predominantly a priori, and Milic runes were replaced with a novel featural alphabet. The basis of what would eventually become Theodia's current military equipment was developed during this time period, as well, with the famed Theodian lamella starting and finishing development during this time.

The recently-cessioned micronation of Underwoodia became the Theodian realm of Mentia, which was to be an entirely online territory located on a Minecraft server. Hundreds of hours were spent constructing the floating city of Lemuria, which was intended to become Theodia's capital city. Mentia eventually failed after its founder, Axel, passed away. Around the same time that Mentia went defunct, Theodia claimed Karia.

Theodia joined the GUM and the Glyphic Union during this era, although it later left the former, and the latter stopped existing shortly after foundation. This era also saw the end of the Runic Union, which had been a centerpiece of Theodia's foreign relations since its foundation. Theodia also established relations with several individual nations. Ultimately, the Transitional Era represented the last high point in Theodian foreign relations for a very long time.

Maturation

The "maturational" period of Aethodian history is considered to have begun with Theodia's declaration of a provisional government in June 2015, and ended with Theodia's return to intermicronational politics in March 2020; which means this period of Aethodian history occurred during and between the Polarised and MW@Discord eras of the MicroWiki community.

Throughout this entire period, activity levels remained at historic lows, and Theodia remained nearly or wholly absent from the greater intermicronational community. There was de facto no functional state or society, with Theodia becoming little more than a sort of model society or thought experiment. Even so, work did continue on the micronation; and slowly-but-surely, Theodia grew in sophistication. The Maturational period, while long and slow, set the direction of future development, with the many of the Emergent era's core institutions having their starts in this era.

In spite of the general trends of isolation and inactivity, the Maturational period included Theodia's first in-person micronational summits: MicroCons 2017 and 2019. This brought the nation some minor media attention, culminating in Swena's interview in Mortitia's Micronational Minutes. Theodia also accepted a few mutual recognition treaties.

During this era, Theodia, after some initial hesitation, fully re-orientated itself to its claim in eastern Greenland. It also created and adopted the modern Theodian flag.

There were numerous technical advances. GitHub was adopted for the development of legislation and computer software. Discord was adopted for internal communication, to the deprecation of Facebook Groups. Taiga was, towards the end of the period, adopted for project management. Work began on a custom national website.

There were numerous systems advances. Numerous novel calendars were created and adopted, only to be discarded soon after development. Trigonometry was better-schematized. Cartography was overhauled. The bases of Theodia's traffic laws were developed. A novel electrical outlet was designed, specified, and adopted. Work continued on the Ergonometric system. Robertson screws were adopted, along with a preference for clockwise chirality in society in general.

There were numerous cultural advances. Unitarian Universalism was declared the official religion. A standard way of writing music was adopted, as well as specific scales. Green-magenta distinctions replaced green-red distinctions, in order to maximize accessibility for all types of single-cone-deficient color-blindnesses. Elements of a national cuisine were defined. Official positions on gender roles were updated for the first time in years.

Many core features of Theodian materialized in this period, including proper numerals, logical operators, a spelling alphabet, a standard barcode and Morse code, and more.

Present

Main article: Modern Aethodia
Note: This section will remain cursory until the era draws to a close.

The "modern" period of Theodian/Aethodian history is considered to have begun with Theodia's return to intermicronational politics in early 2020, and it is currently ongoing; which means this period of Theodian/Aethodian history has occurred during and between the Discord and Modern eras of the MicroWiki community.

Demesne

Theodian claims every 6mo from foundation, for the first nine years

Aethodia has, throughout its history, maintained several land-claims on Earth. However, these claims have often been isolated and desolate, which makes it difficult to convince people to settle there voluntarily, as well as quite expensive to develop. Additionally, all of Aethodia's land-claims have thus far been de jure and de facto controlled by other polities. Even so, Aethodia has since 2016 maintained a claim on Jamesonland in eastern Greenland, as the claim is fertile and well-placed, has never been settled or developed by humans, and is not actively controlled by any polity (with Greenland/Denmark arguably only exercising de jure control); and given these facts, it is perhaps not wholly out-of-the-question that Aethodia may be able to enter into some form of protectorate/vassalage agreement under the Greenlandic government.

Regardless of the Greenlandic claim, Aethodia has, given the difficulties expressed above, additionally adopted a novel approach to territorial expansion: the enticement of already extant cities to voluntarily leave their current political realms to become free cities in the Aethodian fœderation. The Scottish independence referendum has shown that some polities are, at least in principle, willing to peaceably grant political sovereignty to groups on the bases of self-determination and democracy; and Aethodia is capable of offering greater rights and a more sensible government than many cities' previous suzerains. As Aethodia is not guaranteed to be particularly geographically contiguous under this model, it has opted to make all functions of the state virtual and to have no single capital, to show that no one of its member-cities is above another.

Aethodia has also expressed interest in virtual claims, but has not exercised any since Mentia in 2013.

Governance

Devolution

Aethodia has a rather unique and comprehensive devolution scheme consisting of numerous divisions ranging from the national to the interpersonal. Many of these divisions exist de facto in other nations, but in Aethodia they exist de jure and have specific roles and patterns of governance. The three general groupings of administrative divisions are regional, local, and personal. The regional divisions are the federation, the league, and the canton; the local divisions are the municipality, the hood, and the lot; and the personal divisions are the suite, the family, and the individual.

Government

Provisional

The current provisional government consists of the Founder, Swena, and the members of the technocratic juries. People are appointed to the juries according to their skills, and serve for as long as they or the Founder wish. Jurors are allowed to shape policy within the scope of their field. Legislation is developed at GitHub.

Post-provisional

The post-provisional fœderal government of Aethodia will expand dramatically on this base structure. The technocratic juries will number approximately one per discipline (academic and professional alike). Like in the provisional system, each will govern only topics of relevance to their field, with the Law Jury performing QA on all laws passed by the legislature, to ensure that all bills are properly designed and legal before they enter into law. Interdisciplinary issues must be cleared by all relevant juries, with a council of all juries (the "Grand Jury") deciding what is and isn't interdisciplinary. All laws are to be Open Source and available for all Aethodian citizens to see on a government-run hub online, where any citizen may fill out bug-reports and make suggestions, or even write their own legislation (which would then, of course, need approval by the relevant jury/ies). The juries themselves are to operate as Agile scrum teams.

The jurors themselves will be chosen at random from those with sufficient qualifications for the position, be paid ≈17% more than what they earned in the previous year. Each term is 3 years, and consecutive terms are not allowed. The number of people in each jury is 9, to avoid ties; 1/3 of this total (3 people) is replaced every year, to increase the stability of the body relative to completely replacing each jury every 3 years. Jurors can also be recalled. These are some examples of the many and varied considerations factored into the design of the post-provisional government.

Policy

Historically, Aethodian policy at the fœderal level has been for the most part non-formalized, with almost the only exception being the old constitution; and this remains the case under the current provisional government. That said, the vast majority of current policies do exist in writing; they just have not yet been forged into legislation. After the end of the provisional government, ONLY formalized policy will be legally active. All current canon law can be found on Aethodia's GitHub.

Military

Concept art of Aethodian-style armour
Provisional

The current military of Aethodia is an ad-hoc militia composed of every Aethodian citizen, with each training and equipping him/herself. The equipment used is typically homemade, and includes some standard models, such as the FGC-9 Mk2. The Martial Jury, which commands the Aethodian military, is currently headed by Haviair, a career soldier, West Point attendee, and officer in the US Army.

Post-provisional

After the provisional government, the country will practice true universal conscription. Although not everyone will be expected to participate in combat, they will be required to train at least 6 times a season, with a minimum of 6 days (one Aethodian week) between practices (similar to the medieval English requirement to train with the longbow weekly). Armour and weaponry will be provided by the government, with post-pubescent citizens being allowed to keep their equipment. Citizens will be allowed to choose their own combat-classes and preferred terrains, within allowances.

In order to become an officer, one must complete a military degree from an appropriate university, and then be hired by the government (as an officer in the Aethodian military) or a mercenary company (as an officer in a private military). Officers in the national military will have various ranks, which are to be ascended by a mixture of time spent as an officer and the depth of their education.

Police

Provisional

There is currently no formal police force in Aethodia; law-enforcement and justice are administered primarily by the Founder, and secondarily by the people.

Post-provisional

As all citizens would be in the military, all police would be in the military as well; and given this situation, Aethodia has opted to make exclusive use of gendarmeries for its fœderal police, with all such coppers being caparisoned for war, albeit in parade attire to assist with visibility and identification.

Each level of government below the federal would have its own ideas about the police, and the cantons would likely differ from each other significantly. Down at the local level, though, the hoods would typically use neighborhood watches, as a means of supplementing the levels above them.

Foreign affairs

Aethodian foreign policy generally follows the paradigm of Realpolitik. It has, since its founding, exchanged recognition with around 30 other micronations, although its foreign affairs have slowed down considerably since the death of Axel. Regarding international organizations, Aethodia has held membership in three that were of note: the Runic Union, the OAM,[11] and the GUM;[12] it currently lacks membership in any. The majority of the diplomatic treaties Aethodia has ratified have been simple statements of mutual recognition, although there are exceptions, most notable among them being the country's cession of Underwoodia.[13]

There are currently no established plans for how Aethodia's post-provisional government will handle foreign affairs and treaties differently from now.

Society

Economy

Aethodia's economy is expected to be a sort of regulated market-gift economy. It has been on a decline since 2011, when it produced aproximately $42 USD anually, and the annual GDP is now negligible. The government has been generally unconcerned with this, as the current state of the nation's economy in general has never been seen as of particular importance, due to the country's very recent founding and current state of development.

To this date, there have been only two Aethodian companies: Arrowe Games, an inactive video-game company that was once developing an MMORPG named "Quest for Power";[14] and the Theodian Times, which was a private news company founded by Pairdat and intended to release stories once a month about current happenings in Theodia.

It is planned to have Aethodia's economy entirely online, and to use advanced statistics and incentivizing taxes, among other things, to optimize it. Also, two different currencies are planned, one of which specializes in the store of value function, and the other in the medium of exchange function. The latter will be backed by the former.

Culture

Aethodian culture is divided into "high" and "low" forms. Aethodia's high culture is engineered by the technocratic juries; while its low cultures are those that emerge naturally. The high culture is taught in schools nationwide; while the low cultures are taught just in the areas where they are practiced.

Languages

Aethodia has two levels of official languages: primary (of which there can only be one) and secondary (of which there can be many). Each official language also has an official script. The primary language is used by the government internally; while secondary languages are used in citizen–government interactions. Each devolution of the government has its own primary and secondary languages, and these do not have to be the same as those used by the national government, with the exception that the primary national language must be at least a secondary language of each devolution. For the national government, the current primary language is Aethodian in Aethodic, and the only secondary language at the moment is English in Roman; but, as Aethodian is not yet complete, English in Roman is currently the acting primary language.

Regarding the current two official languages:
Aethodian is an engineered language designed by linguist Miles Huff to be as regular, intuitive, and ergonomic as possible; essentially, to get out-of-the-way of its users. It has been in development since 2010, and upon completion will gradually become the lingua franca of the country.
Aethodian English is a dialect of English spoken within Aethodia. It is very similar to Southwest-Floridian English, but with a few specific differences, such as its lack of gendered pronouns. Aethodians, in their day-to-day lives, currently speak English almost exclusively.

Customs

Aethodia's high culture is just as engineered as its language; but it is no less-vibrant than any other. Perhaps one of its most-noticeable characteristics is its conventions, which are vastly different than those of any other society. Instead of SI units, Aethodia uses the Ergonometric system; Aethodian maps point south-up; and mathematical conventions differ significantly from the norm in the West. Besides conventions, the country's unique traditional garb has also been engineered, and the country even has its own unique bricklaying bond, lamellar pattern, and chainmail weave. These traditions were not born of nationalistic dreams, but of holistic ergonomism, designed with every piece being, to the greatest extents possible, intuitive, ergonomic, and compatible with the other components. Aethodia in general throws the world's traditions out the window in the interest of finding things that are, in and of themselves, ideal.

Among other cultural traditions, Aethodia has six holidays every year, dual agnatic/enatic inheritance, a system of romance based on polyamoury, and a national religion dedicated to pluralism. The most popular sports in the country are battlegaming (especially per the FiodiLARP ruleset) and association football, with the former seen as especially representative of national identity. The country's musical tradition, however, is yet underdeveloped; and the country also lacks much of a graphical tradition, with such art being thus far limited to simple calligraphy in the primary national language.

Media

Aethodia has been mentioned in multiple academic works;[15][16] as well as several non-academic books, including the Micro series[17] and Bahareth's Micronations.[18] Aethodia has also received the attention of various news sources, both micronational[19][20] and macronational;[21][22][23] and the Aethodian language made an appearance in the documentary Conlanging, the Art of Crafting Tongues.[24] There even appears to be some foreign fan-art[25] and fan-fiction[26] based on Aethodia, this representing the first known non-Hetalian instance of Micro-chanism in micronationalism.

Regarding internal media, Aethodia has, since the year of its inception, had a national news-service and YouTube channel; although the former publishes only on rare occasion, and the latter has only posted one video.[27] In mid-2012, a development blog was started so as to document recent happenings in Aethodia;[28] it was later discontinued.

In early 2012, plans were made by Pandora Paradox to create a private news company in Aethodia. One article was completed, but it was never released to the public; and the company ultimately floundered. The original Wordpress site was deleted, its article presumed lost. It was later found by Founder Swena in Google Docs in 2013, and was an interview with him by Paradox about the GOV programming language. The article was then lost once again, for good, sometime in 2015.[29]

In 2014, a CyberNation[30] and a NationState[31] loosely based on and formally unaffiliated with Aethodia were created. Additional spin-off nations[32][33][34] in various other online simulations were created in 2017, but only the Politics & War one remained active for any length of time. In the beginning of 2019, both the CyberNation and the Politics & War nation were discontinued; and the NationState was discontinued later-on in 2019.
