Makronisos (Hellenic: Μακρόνησος, romanised: Makrónīsos, pronounced: [maˈkro.ni.sos]) is one of the five Special Administrative Divisions of Græcia. It was formed on 14 March 2024 AD, located on the island of Makronisos, Hellas.

Name

Makronisos was named after the homonymous island which is claimed by Græcia. In English, it means "long island"; the term «Μακρόνησος» is a compound word, composed of the words «μακρός» ("long") and «νῆσος» ("island").

History

Poseidonia

The island of Makronisos was initially claimed micronationally by Aziz Baştosun, who founded the Republic of Poseidonia (Hellenic: Δημοκρατία τῆς Ποσειδωνίας) in April 2012 AD. Poseidonia was named after Poseidonia, a settlement in southeastern Attica, Hellas. The area claimed by Poseidonia was ca. 18,5 km² and as of 2012, there were 9 recorded inhabitants in that year's census. Poseidonia's currency was the Poseidonian Sterline, alongside Euro. On 1 February 2019 AD, after a long period of inactivity, the president of Poseidonia requested the disestablishment of the micronation. It was revived on 9 March 2019 AD by the former vice-president of Poseidonia, who created a constitutional assembly and appointed himself as the president.

Poseidonia became a member of the League of Hellenistic Micronations on 7 March 2017 AD. Although initially invested, the micronation gradually fell into obscurity. By AD 2021, Poseidonia was no longer active. Following the abolishment of the General Secretariat of the League, Poseidonia lost its status and was demoted to [inactive] Observer on 21 September 2022 AD. On 14 March 2023 AD, Poseidonia became a Protectorate of Græcia, following the guidelines established by the League: for one year, the integrity of the micronation is defended by the volunteer protector-micronation. If one year passes without the return of the legal government, the protector has the right to absorb the protectorate and incorporate it as part of his micronation; otherwise, the control of the region must be returned to its legal governor(s). As predicted, no micronationalist claimed Poseidonia and on 14 March 2024 AD, a year after its establishment, the Protectorate of Poseidonia was officially dissolved and assimilated by Græcia, given the status of "special administrative division".
