It outranks a lieutenant colonel of the army and marines, a commander of the navy, and a wing commander of the air force. Its equivalent is a colonel of the army, and marines, and a group captain of the air force. It is outranked by a brigadier general of the army and marines, a commodore of the navy, and an air commodore of the air force.

The duties of a captain are to command a base, school, or large warships.

Insignia of a captain on the peaked cap is a row of gold oak leaves on the peak. On the service hat, it is a thick gold strap. The cap badge is a senior naval officer cap badge. Three rows of buttons are worn on the tunic, as well as four regular gold bands around the cuff, with the top-most having a curl facing inward.
