A lieutenant is a junior commissioned officer of the Baustralian Armed Forces, more specifically, His Royal Navy. It outranks a sub-lieutenant of the navy, and a lieutenant of the army. Its equivalent is a captain of the army. It is outranked by a lieutenant commander of the navy, and a major of the army. The duties of a lieutenant are to be second in command to a ship, or commander to a patrol vessel.
Insignia
Insignia of a Lieutenant of the navy on the peaked cap is a gold band on the outward edge of the peak. On the service hat, it is a thin gold strap. The cap badge is a crowned anchor surrounded by a oak leaf wreath. Three rows of buttons are worn on the tunic, as well as two gold bands around the cuff, with the top-most having a curl facing inward.
