History

The Chief of Defence Staff, formerly known as the Chief of the General Staff, served as the professional head of the Vishwamitran Armed Forces and was considered to the senior-most officer of the armed forces. However, in August 2021, Rashtradhyaksh Varuna Sriraya who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the tri-services made a proposal before the Armed Forces Council which was soon supported by all its members. It was proposed that the permanent chairmanship of the armed forces shall be abolished and be replaced by a tri-service collective command headed by the three Chiefs of the Services and the position of the chair rotating among the three service chiefs every three months. Finally, the position of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) was abolished on 24 August 2021.

Several months later, on 26 November 2021, Air Chief Marshal Matthew Griffin who serves as the Chief of the Air Staff was appointed as the first Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee (CoSC) for a tenure of three months which ends on 26 February 2022.
