The dukesmark (symbol: ℳ; code MQD; also abbreviated Mℳ to distinguish it from other mark denominated currencies) is the currency of the Grand Duchy of Marquette. Originally created in 2019. The current series was created in 2022.
Etymology
The name "dukesmark" is a combination of the word "duke," the system of government of the Grand Duchy, and "mark," from the former german currency, the deutsche mark. The Para is from the de jure subdivision of the Serbian dinar, the groz and polushka are from former subdivisions of the Russian ruble. The polushka is relatively unknown outside of taxes and is usually written as a fraction of a para.
Units
the subdivisions of the dukesmark are based on the Carolingian monetary system.
Decimal
the decimal mark (symbol: ) and was subdivided into 100 dukespieces (symbol: ). The dukesmarks issued by the Marquetten Lighthouse Board retain the decimal piece, however the symbol p is generally used as opposed to the traditional .
History
First Dukesmark
The First dukesmark was created in mid 2019, they were pegged to the U.S. dollar. the first series notes were disbanded because they were too time consuming to make as they were hand drawn.
The Second series of notes was created sometime early 2020, They were created digitally and printed off and saw much wider circulation. Planned coinage remained the same, hence the disparity between the series of coins and note in circulation.
Second Dukesmark
The Second dukesmark was created on 12 May 2021 and was the first to be pegged to Marquettes' most valuable produce—potatoes. It was also the only series to follow the divisible system (each note being half the next largest).
Third Dukesmark
The Third Dukesmark was created with the 2023 constitution of Marquette and reformed the dukesmark to use the Carolingian monetary system and revalued from an individual potato to one Marquetten pound of potatoes. The third series notes will continue to be accepted as legal tender until 2028 at an exchange rate of 4 decimal to 1 non-decimal, however the old mark has already fallen out of general circulation.
Redenomonation error
While the official rate of 3rd dukesmarks to new dukes marks was originally intended to be 5.34 to 1, it was noted early on that that number was based on an outdated value of potatoes, while this was quickly fixed for banknote exchange the number 5.34 would remain the de jure rate until June 26 2023.
fourth series notes resizing
following a test print on November 25th and a several week long discussion, the height of the fourth series notes were set at 3 inches. As opposed to 82mm, which was originally proposed.
Coins
The para and most groz denominations currently only exist legally as the Grand Duchy of Marquette currently does not have the means to create coins, although some coinage designs have been planned.

Ersatz notes
Main article: Notgeld
Ersatz notes are banknotes locally minted in chiefly the value of the missing national coinage. Their design varies between issuing location greatly but they are typically quite simple. they frequently have an expiry date built in. Ersatz notes have seen diminishing circulation in recently due in large part to the release of official fractional banknotes.
Official fractional notes
Due to the continuing inavailability of coinage the Marquetten government has approved the issue of notes denominated 1П, 3П, 6П, 1/~, and 5/~. Marquetten fractional notes will go through demonetization 2 years following the minting of national coinage.
