The Despotate of Socorro, more commonly known as Socorro, is a micronation off the coast of Mexico. It was originally founded as a school project by Nada I of Reynolds-Romanova. It has continued to be operated as a true personal union of marquette, with Nada I of Reynolds-Romanov as it's Despot

The Despotate of Socorro is a Feudal state with a socialist economy based somewhat on the traditional incan economy.

Etymology

Socorro Island was discovered by Spanish explorer Hernando de Grijalva on Christmas Day 1533. Rediscovered in 1608, it was named Isla Socorro ("Island of Aid") by explorer Martín Yañez de Armida.

History

in 2021 Socorro was founded as a school project for an economy class, however at the end of the project Nada I was so endeared to the nation and she decided to continue it's operation

Politics and government

the despot

The Despot is the supreme executive power, who is chosen by the prior Despot from any citizen. The Despot has the power to sign or veto legislation,appoint the commanders of the armed forces, ask for the written opinion of the Duma, convene or adjourn The Diet, grant reprieves and pardons,set the budget as well as set payment for government positions and universal income, and receive ambassadors.

The Duma is an advisory body to the Despot elected by the populace, consisting 32 members, the Duma doesn't have executive power itself, instead voting on a recommendation for the Despot's course of action.

the diet

The Diet, is a unicameral legislative body, they have 128 members that are elected by the fiefs, it has the power to, Make laws, Declare war, Raise and provide public money, impeach and, try Government officials, Approve treaties negotiated by the Despot, Oversight and investigations, and approving Despotic orders.

the fiefs

Fiefs are a class of people who are appointed land to manage in the name of the despot, they have the power to, sign or veto local legislation, Create an advisory body, convene or adjourn Their Council, Submit petitions to the duma, and vote on any citizen to be a member of the diet.

The title "Fief" is itself just the class, the actual members can be one of 7 titles, the difference is a combination of amount of land and prestige, they are, in order of most to least prestigious:

councils

Councils are a local bicameral legislative body, they have 96 members 32 of which are appointed by the Diet, the other 64 are elected from the local populace, it has the power to, Make local laws, Submit petitions to the Diet, Oversight and investigations, and approve Fief's orders.

Military

Professional army

Socorro only has one standing regiment of professional soldiers, but with approval from both the Diet and the Despot more can be raised, for a period not exceeding 2 years without renewal.

National Guards

The national guards are semi-permanent armies made of volunteers that are formed and run by Fiefs, they are funded entirely by the Fief who controls the structure and equipment of the national guard

Militias

Militias are volunteer armies made of, run by, and entirely funded by, citizens.

In times of desperation, with approval from two of the following, the local council, the Diet, the Despot, at which point it will temporarily be nationalized as a regiment, where it will be funded and equipped by the government (until the time that it fails to be renewed.).

Geography and climate

Mean daily air temperatures at Socorro average 26 °C throughout the year. The annual precipitation is 761 mm year -1 , 80 % of which occurs during the summer.^[1]

Economy

The economy of Socorro is based around a system of "labour levies" where the government will estimate the number of people needed for a project, look for qualified people, and send them a notification that they will be needed for work. Participation is not mandatory, and the candidate can refuse or request different work. Workers recruited in this manner will be paid by the state.
