Dukesmark banknotes are the banknotes in circulation in the Grand Duchy of Marquette and it's related territories denominated in dukesmarks (symbol: ℳ; code MQD; also abbreviated MQℳ to distinguish it from other mark denominated currencies.).

Dukesmark banknotes are official currency in the Grand Duchy of Marquette, and the Marquetten Empire as well as being accepted somewhat in Socorro and Badis

dukesmark notes have seen circulation in Marquette even in rural areas, counter to what was previously thought.

Types of Banknotes

There are several official designations for banknotes in Marquette, chiefly Bank of Marquette Notes.

Current

Bank of Marquette Notes

Bank of Marquette notes are the most commonly circulated banknotes in Marquette, they are issued by the Bank of Marquette and are officially backed with Treasury Notes.

Treasury Notes

Treasury Notes are banknotes issued directly from the Grand Ducal Treasury officially every ℳ1 in Treasury Notes is backed by 1lb of potatoes.

Treasury Certificates

a Treasury certificate is similar to a Treasury note except it is backed by materials other than potatoes. Treasury Certificates are typically referred to by their backing (I.E. Gold Certificate)

Currently circulating notes

The current issue is the fourth series, it is the first series to have the banknotes scaled by value.

Withdrawn notes

There have four series of banknotes to date, with only the third and fourth still in common circulation

First series

The First series was created in mid 2019, they were hand drawn and pegged to the U.S. dollar, the were disbanded because they were too time consuming to make.

Second series

The Second series was created sometime early 2020, They were created digitally and printed off. they were still pegged to the U.S. dollar they were withdrawn due to badly ageing design.

Third

The Third series was created on 12 May 2021 and were the first to be pegged to the GDMs most valuable produce, potatoes. It was also the only series to follow the divisible system (each note being half the next largest). They were withdrawn due to badly ageing design and to aid in de-decimalization.

Issues with third series notes

Third series notes were plagued with issues dating back to the designs of the notes themselves as the intent was the same as currently circulating notes.

Issuance

The Bank of Marquette is currently the only issuer of circulating dukesmark banknotes. There are several individuals and institutions permitted to issue dukesmark denominated banknotes these are

The following can issue Banknotes of any denomination under ℳ1

  • Parish Governments
  • The County of Montague
  • The Grand Ducal Armed forces*

*with the exception of the Grand Ducal Guards with a limit of ℳ5 and the House Militia with a limit of 10/~.
