The Arundel Convention is an Agreement between micronations that involves micronational mutual recognition, land claims, and micronation definition. The Convention was discussed and drafted by a collection of micronations, until the current version became official. The document is officially hosted on the League of Independent Nations.
Any micronation may subscribe to the Arundel Convention. To formally subscribe to the Convention, a micronation leader simply needs to declare, on any public space (either physical or virtual), that his/her micronation officially subscribes to the agreements and benefits offered by the Arundel Convention. "Public space" is defined as a space that can be accessed without restrictions or without the need to log in. This excludes Discord servers and Facebook posts, but includes public Reddit subs.
Preamble
The Arundel Convention first describes the motivation for the name. Arundel is a town in Quebec, where the Convention was first formulated. As it is the tradition with most conventions, the document was therefore named after the town it was drafted in. The document then describes the purpose of the Convention:
- The Arundel Convention seeks to provide an agreement between the emerging nations of the World, those that are often called "micronations". This agreement is similar to the one signed by the league of nations several decades ago. However this Convention hopes to provide a new, modernized platform for all emerging nations to stand taller. The purpose of such an agreement is to allow the evolution of the world and of its new cultural forces, to ensure peace between these new nations, and to encourage individuality and prosperity for all participating parties.
The document here indirectly refers to the Montevideo Convention, which is often invoked to support micronational movements. The Arundel document therefore aims to form an updated version of the Montevideo Convention.
Article 1
The First Article describes the different stages of micronational creation.
Three Types of micronations (referred to as "nations" in the document) are described, so to separate true micronational movements from temporary ideas. These Types are determined by the amount of time a micronation has existed, which is a fair indicator of its seriousness. Micronations that have existed for a year or longer are considered Type 1 Nations, or true micronations, and therefore gain the full benefits of the Convention. Those that have existed for a smaller period of time are considered Type 2 (4 to 12 months old, also called "Nations in Training") and Type 3 (less than 4 months old, also called "Newborn Nations). According to the Convention:
- Any nation, regardless of its Type, shall be recognized as such only if it meets all of these three criterions:
- it must have a stable population of individuals that voluntarily became official citizens,
- it must have a formal Constitution that describes a government structure for the nation,
- it must be a fellow signatory to the Arundel Convention.
Note the difference with the old Montevideo Convention, which required micronations to request land claims. The new definition provided by the Arundel Convention allows for the recent rise of virtual nations; it also allows for the Parallel Plane Theory of sovereignty.
Article 2
The second article of the document describes non-interference provisions, and introduced automatic mutual recognition. Article 2 states that signatory micronations may not attack one another, or interfere in any manner with one another's governments. This is to ensure that signatory micronations conserve their individuality and independence.
The second article also decrees that all signatory micronations are required to recognize one another. This enforces an automatic recognition system, in other words, all micronations are assumed to recognize one another - which means that they are not require to maintain official recognition statements once they subscribe to the Convention.
Article 3
Article 3 of the Arundel Convention is a declaration of the fundamental rights of the human citizens of any micronations. Many newly formed micronation struggle to define the rights of their citizens in their constitutions, and so the Arundel Convention provides some basic rights for them.
- the Right to live - individuals have the right of life and of existence, and such life may not be terminated by any entity.
- the Right of health - the health of any individual may not be altered by any entity, for any reason.
- the Right of movement - the movements of any innocent individual shall not be subject to restrictions, as long as such movements respect the Constitution and laws of the nations.
- the Right of expression - no individual shall be coerced to remain silent, or coerced to express things against her/his will, as long as such expressions respect the Constitution and laws of the nations.
- the Right of thoughts - no individual shall be coerced to believe ideologies against her/his will.
- the Right of actions - no individual shall be coerced to take actions against her/his will. Individuals are free to take any actions as long as such actions respect the Constitution and laws of the nations.
These rights are inspired by the old Declaration of Human Rights, and their adoption may increase likelihood of recognition by other, more conventional nations.
