The Socialist Party of the Arstotzkan Union (SPAU) is a prominent left-wing political entity within the Arstotzkan Union. Since January 2023, it has maintained an unbroken tenure as the ruling party of the nation.

The party’s nomenclature has evolved significantly since its inception. Initially known as the Coalition Government when it was founded on 23 March 2020, it was subsequently renamed the United Government Alliance from 9 April 2020 until the integration of the Arstotzkan Labour Party following the Election. On 12 May 2020, the party adopted the title of the Second Democratic People’s Party of the Arstotzkan Union (SDPPAU), drawing inspiration from the Arstotzkan People’s Party, the inaugural political party of the Arstotzkan Union. A further name change occurred on 8 August 2022, when the Presidium Congress rebranded the party as the Arstotzkan Social Liberal Democratic Party (ASLDP).

On 16 February 2024, the Arstotzkan Future Party, a leading constituent party within the SPAU, proposed a motion in the Political Bureau to rename the ASLDP as the Socialist Party of the Arstotzkan Union. The Presidium approved this change the following day, reflecting the nation’s shift towards a more socialist orientation and the party’s commitment to embody this transformation.

From 2020 to 2022, the SDPPAU held exclusive power over the state, a position that the SPAU has held since January 2023. This transition followed the formation of the Arstotzkan Conservative Alliance Party and the unsuccessful coup attempt in January 2023.

The current General Secretary of the party is Peter Gedye, who also presides over two of the four constituent parties of the SPAU: the Arstotzkan Pirate Party and the Communist League of the Arstotzkan Union. The First President, Ethan Brinkman, leads the Arstotzkan Future Party, another constituent party.

The SPAU’s political ideologies are informed by its constituent parties. It derives its principles of Arstotzkanism and Democratic Socialism from the Arstotzkan Future Party, while its Communist leanings are influenced by the Communist League.

The party maintains an absolute majority within the Arstotzkan Federal Government and has remained unchallenged since January 2023.

History

The party was established on 11 May 2020 and held all seats in the National Assembly. This moved the Arstotzkan Union from a multi-party government to a single-party state over nearly a month.

Over the time since the election the party has seen major reforms in the Arstotzkan Union with the Federalisation of the Arstotzkan Union beginning in early October 2020, as well as the changing of Presidents in January - February 2021.

When the National Assembly was divided in April 2021, the SDPPAU still held all seats in both houses.

In February 2022, the SDPPAU lost majority control in all houses to the newly created Arstotzkan Conservative Alliance Party.

On 8 August 2022, the Presidium Congress ruled that the name of the SDPPAU was too long and made it the Social Liberal Democratic Party.

Following an attempted coup by the National Right Alliance Party, which was known as the Arstotzkan Conservative Alliance Party until it was taken over by ultra-nationalist, conservative militarists, the Socialist Party became the sole ruling parting in the Arstotzkan Union again. This brought the Arstotzkan Union back to a single-party state again.

In 2024, the Arstotzkan Future Party announced a motion to rename the party to the Socialist Party of the Arstotzkan Union. On 18 February 2024, the Presidium Congress of the Politburo officially approved the name change.
