The Socialist Party of the Arstotzkan Union (SPAU) is a left wing political party in the Arstotzkan Union. The party is also the ruling party of the nation and has been in complete power since January 2023.

The party has gone by many names since its formation. On 23 March 2020 the party was known just as the Coalition Government until the party was given its first name to be known as the United Government Alliance before it was renamed following the addition of the Arstotzkan Labour Party into the Alliance. On 12 May 2020 the party became the Second Democratic People's Party of the Arstotzkan Union or SDPPAU for short. The party took inspiration from the Arstotzkan People's Party, which was the first political party in the Arstotzkan Union. On 8 August 2022 the party was renamed again by the Presidium Congress and became the Arstotzkan Social Liberal Democratic Party.

On 16 February 2024 the Arstotzkan Future Party, the leading body party in the SPAU put forward a motion in the Political Bureau to rename the party from the Arstotzkan Social Liberal Democratic Party to the Socialist Party of the Arstotzkan Union and the next day the Presidium announced that it would approve the name change. The Arstotzkan Future Party claimed it was due to the nation adopting a more socialist stance and that it should be the mission of the party to embrace it.

Since January 2023, the ASLDP has been the sole ruling party of the Arstotzkan Union. This has been the case for the party before and from 2020 - 2022 the SDPPAU was the sole ruling party of the state until the formation of the Arstotzkan Conservative Alliance Party. Following the attempted January 2023 Coup, the ASLDP became the sole ruling party of the Arstotzkan Union, and it continues to this day.

The party’s current General Secretary is Peter Gedye, who is also head of two of the four body parties of the ASLDP: the Arstotzkan Pirate Party and Communist League of the Arstotzkan Union. First President Ethan Brinkman is head of the other body party, which is the Arstotzkan Future Party.

The party’s political ideologies derive from its main body parties. The ASDLP gets Arstotzkanism and Democratic Socialism from the Arstotzkan Future Party and Communism from the Communist League.

The party holds an absolute majority in the houses of the Arstotzkan Federal Government, and has stood unopposed since January 2023.

History

The party was established on 11 May 2020 and held all seats in the National Assembly. This moved the Arstotzkan Union from a multi-party government to a single-party state over nearly a month.

Over the time since the election the party has seen major reforms in the Arstotzkan Union with the Federalisation of the Arstotzkan Union beginning in early October 2020, as well as the changing of Presidents in January - February 2021.

When the National Assembly was divided in April 2021, the SDPPAU still held all seats in both houses.

In February 2022, the SDPPAU lost majority control in all houses to the newly created Arstotzkan Conservative Alliance Party.

On 8 August 2022, the Presidium Congress ruled that the name of the SDPPAU was too long and made it the Social Liberal Democratic Party.

Following an attempted coup by the National Right Alliance Party, which was known as the Arstotzkan Conservative Alliance Party until it was taken over by ultra-nationalist, conservative militarists, the Socialist Party became the sole ruling parting in the Arstotzkan Union again. This brought the Arstotzkan Union back to a single-party state again.

In 2024, the Arstotzkan Future Party announced a motion to rename the party to the Socialist Party of the Arstotzkan Union. On 18 February 2024, the Presidium Congress of the Politburo officially approved the name change.
