Klaise (/klaɪs/), officially Dominion of Klaise, is an autonomous dominion of states in the Appalachian foothills of eastern North America. The country is an enclave within the United States with no micronational borders. Its history dates back to 2009 when it was founded on a school playground. The country has a colonial presence, having some external states. The government operates as an absolute monarchy with a Duke holding an absolute position as head of state.

Klaise comes from a mis-spelling of the name "Klause". The Autocrat thought it sounded neat after doing the typo many times before and renamed the country from Schandeleiria to Klaise. The name Schandeleiria comes from the Autocrat's surname. The name Dodoa came from the Autocrat's fascination with the dodo. The name Bijbojique, the original playground micronation, comes from the founder's pet chihuahua's name Big Boy and adding -ique to the end. The dog the country was named after would later be attacked by a much larger dog in May 2013 and pass away.

The Duke of Klaise's role name does not refer to the traditional definition of duke, but from Latin dux, for leader.

Before Klaise

Before European settlers such as the British came to the area around Klaise, the Shawnee people lived in the area as there is evidence of this in the surrounding area. It is not known if any indigenous people lived on or used the land that would become Klaise. In the late 20th century, logging happened in the area. This is evident by the logging roads and leftover litter from that time. In the early 1990s, the first Klaisan settlers would buy a single plot of land to build a house in what would become Monomiu.

Flag of the Duchy of Dodoa, 2011

In late 2009, Bijbojique was created. This micronation was created by elementary kids on the playground, and it was a monarchy. This country never claimed the land where Klaise is, but as a state it is considered a predecessor of what is now Klaise. This soon fell into irrelevancy until early 2011 when the Duchy of Dodoa was founded. This country had its own flag and would be the first micronation on the land where Klaise is. This micronation was later renamed Schandeleiria and the duchy was replaced with an autocracy. This micronation would be the first Klaisan country to be documented on any micronational wiki. On the wiki, this country would be removed around 2012 after politically incorrect things were allegedly said to the wiki's chat from the Autocrat.

Middle and Meme Eras

From late 2012 to early 2016, this time is called the Middle Age in Klaisan history. During this time, Schandeleiria would be renamed to Klaise. Klaise was slowly developing a culture and language until it became apparent Klaise had its own distinct culture and was a country that not just Klaisan nationals participated in, but outsiders as well. The Express Route system was created for fast transportation of vehicles between the major settlements.

In 2015, Klaise created its own writing script which would fall into obscurity a few months later. In late 2015, Klaise was thrown into a scandal pertaining to online content, again in early 2017. These events are colloqually known as memes. December 2015 is considered the start of the Meme Era.

Pier on Lake Kekyl, 2016

In early 2016, Klaise is reformed and becomes a federation of individual "states" (state governments didn't exist) and was renamed to Schandeleiria. Schandeleiria would be a host of synth music and continue to produce entertainment. Development of Vinsford, a town on the Klaise River began. In 382 (early 2016), Schandeleiria's northern neighbors took control of the Cervosia region so Klaisan colonists moved south to create Lake Kekyl which would make Kekyl and Geoxe County thrive.

In late 2016, the downfall of Schandeleiria as a country began. The draining of Lake Kekyl caused a high demand of water, but a low supply due to the northern tensions about the river. All of the progress in Kekyl disappeared, and an economic recession began. Demand for wood went down while it was still being produced, causing a large surplus of wood. This wood was used to build a storage building in the Scipler region on the site of what would become Isciler. In October 2016, Schandeleiria would be renamed back to Klaise. In January 2017, Klaise begins exploring the Diluvame area, which is farther downstream from Vinsford. The Meme Era is regarded by some to be the worst time in Klaisan history due to these economic effects along with other factors.

Recent events

Development of the north continued with the Cervos Bridge and Isciler Tower built in April 2017. The second attempt at a Cervosian colony failed at Cervos Bridge. The failure of this colony was also caused by the northerners who came and took over the area. The bridge would soon fall into a state of disrepair and would be washed out by a flash flood. In late 2018 Klaisan web developers saw their work become very popular, such as with the Normie Test or the Do you like memes website in general.

In 2020, Felixshire County saw great developments as Monomiu's urban sprawl entered the county. New residences exist in the new town of Ivydon, east of Monomiu. During the deforestation for Ivydon, Scipler County was greatly deforested, destroying a lot of the Klaisan scenery.

In early 2021 the Scipler State movement began, beginning the dialogue about establishing a new state in the north of Klaise State, splitting it in two. Environmentalists upset about the clearing of the forests want to establish a new state in the north of the country which is still forested and wild.

In late 2021, the Isciler Tower collapsed. Isciler is now a ghost town.

In March 2022, Klaise reorganized its self into a dominion of states, to organize its rule of distant states and to decentralize the rule from Klaise State. The Autocratic Office renamed its self to the Duke's Office. The Autocrat is now a Duke. Rather than declaring himself an emperor, Vincent I decided to declare his role as a Duke in this newly organized dominion. He deemed the title of "emperor" to be too arrogant.

The official motto of the country was changed to "Feliung un frie", in English, forested and free. This refers to Klaise being covered in forests and it being a free country.

On 3 March 2022, Klaise became a founding member of the Based Micronational Union, a union primarily centered around a stance against using Discord and other closed and proprietary software and services to conduct micronational diplomacy.

Klaise has drafted a Constitution in late 2019, but it has yet to be made official. Rights of the citizens include the right to bear arms, to free speech, to remain silent, to roam freely within the country's boundaries as a citizen, and to maintain a homogenous nation.

Notably, Klaise heavily restricts the importing of unhealthy food, the publishing of accurate analytics and maps of the country, and the affiliation with any religion besides Christianity.

Since 2022, Klaise was declared a dominion and its previous organization was disbanded. Klaise's head of state is now a Duke. The current duke is Vincent van Klaise. The Duke's role in the country is exactly the same as the previous Autocrat role. The Duke has absolute rule over the country. States that are autonomous in their nature are not fully ruled by the Duke.

The Autocratic Office was the head of state in Klaise for many years, from 2011 to 2022. The holder of this seat was called the Autocrat. This position has been renamed the Duke's Office.

There are zero political parties in Klaise. The country could be considered a single-party state, with affiliation with Klaise being a de-facto political party.

Health and education

The Office of Education and Health operates an emergency clinic for first-aide in Monomiu, and operates a school for children's education from grade 1 to grade 12. Klaisan adolescents are encouraged to earn their high school credits as soon as possible. So far, 100% of Klaisan citizens earned their high school diploma before the age of 18, prior to grade 12. It has been considered to make it compulsory for high school students in the country to graduate as soon as possible, at age 16 if possible, to get students in post-secondary education sooner.

Office of Education and Health

In 2022, a new office was created along with the Duke of Klaise. The Education and Health Officer role was created to manage Klaise's primary education, healthcare and libraries. This office is seated in Monomiu. It is the second office created in Klaisan history.

On 28 February 2022, Eleanor I of Pinedale was appointed as the Education and Health Officer by Vincent I. She deems herself as the country's reference librarian.

Klaise determines citizenship by jus sanguinis, meaning a newborn child whose mother and/or father is a Klaisan citizen will also be a Klaisan citizen. A person can be naturalized in Klaise, gaining citizenship if they have a similar ethnicity to Klaisan people, has accepted Jesus Christ as Lord, is familiar with Klaisan culture, and is provably self-sufficient. A new citizen's naturalization is done by the Duke.

States are municipalities within the dominion. There are four states in the dominion, none of them being contiguous. States don't require their own governments, but they have the capacity to implement one. Two states are designated as semi-autonomous, meaning they rule over themselves locally but are still owned by the dominion. Klaise State and Kataun are both directly administrated by the Duke of Klaise, they are not autonomous.

Counties are ceremonial divisions within states. Counties are best compared to northern England's hundreds. Not all states have counties. Counties don't have any government of their own and are mainly used for analytical and geographic purposes. As of 2020, there are seven counties in Klaise State. Many Klaisans will use counties as their hometown in conversation.

Klaise State's counties and cities

Klaise is a country that is divided into four states, none being contiguous. One of them, Klaise State, is divided into seven ceremonial counties.

Southern Klaise State holds more than half of the country's population in Monomiu. This region is an open grassland with rolling hills. The north of Klaise State is heavily forested and mountainous. The region gives way to a deep valley.

Scipler and Smokia Counties are on a ridge with the Smokia and Scipler Rivers flowing into the Cervosia River to the north. Felisenke and Umberjualde Counties are primarily in the lowlands, near the Cervosia River.

In Klaise, there are a few settlements. Monomiu is the most populous town in the country, and is also the capitol. It is home to more than half of the country's population. Saukrame is the country's industrial center, having farms and machines. Ivydon is a suburb of Monomiu, to the east, having a few housing developments. Ausshaffen is a small village north of Monomiu in Geoxe County, surrounded completely by a wall. The rest of the settlements around the country aren't actively developed or inhabited, such as Isciler and Deilton.

There are a few bodies of water in Klaise, and the most prominent and permanent is the Cervosia River in the north. The Vinsford Dam held back a reservoir on the river in the early 380s (early 2016) before the dam was inundated by a flash flood.

Lake Kekyl existed from 2010 to 2016. In 2016, the dam was undone because of poor water quality. Since 2018, the area where Lake Kekyl once sat is now Geoxeton, which lays at the turn where the Geoxe River runs through a canal into the northern parts of Felixshire County instead of Scipler County, which irrigates crops in the region. In 2020, a basin was dug out for a pond to exist north of Geoxeton, in the same area Lake Kekyl existed.

Klaise has different microclimates, which can differ with variations of a humid subtropical climate. Temperatures are cooler in the higher elevations, where Isciler is at 1400 feet. At Deilton, at 1250 feet, it is slightly warmer. The entire country is slightly colder than the rest of Kentucky due to its unique position to wind chill, making it have a hardiness zone of 6a rather than 6b.

Klaise State's highway map (Click to view)

Klaise State has a road system called the State Road System which connects major places together. These roads have no standard for construction and most can't support vehicle traffic. The numbering system is similar to the American Interstate system, with odd numbers being north-south, even numbers being east-west, numbers increasing the farther northeast the road is, and decreasing to the southwest.

The most heavily travelled road in the country is State Road 45, which connects the southern border, Monomiu and Saukrame. It is an important artery for Monomiu and Geoxe Counties. Other important routes are Road 55 for northern travel and Road 10 for eastern travel within Klaise State.

There are a variety of bridges in Klaise. They mainly span the Geoxe River and are located in Geoxeton. There is a suspension bridge, a chisled stone bridge, and an improvised stone bridge.

Klaise has a population of 11 as of Census 490 (March 2022). In Census 490, cats and dogs are no longer considered part of the population. Also, the public data from this census is required to be spoofed by a small number, as it was deemed a security concern to reveal the exact population of the country or any of its municipalities.

The flag of Klaise features the colors navy blue, white, and goldenrod yellow derived from Kentucky's flag. Klaise uses the 3:5 ratio. The flag is a horizontal tricolor with a simplified version of the Katzedemblem on it, a symbol that is a depiction of a cat's head, Klaise's national animal. The seal is placed 1/3 from the left edge and halfway between the top and bottom.

Historically, Klaise's colors have alternated between navy blue or maroon (dark red), with yellow and white being secondary colors. The main color of Klaise changes to the current paradigm of the country. Currently, it is navy blue, as the country deemed the previous red-on-black banner to be too edgy. Before the "Edgy Banner" was dedicated in 390, the flag was a simple Katzedemblem colored light blue on top of a white banner, which had been the flag since at least 2013. Before this, Klaise's flag was never officially dedicated but contained both blue and red colors.

All designs of the Katzedemblem

The Katzedemblem is the most recognized symbol of Klaise. It was created in circa 2010. It is intended to appear as a cat's head.

Coat of arms

Klaise's Coat of Arms

The country's coat of arms was officially dedicated on 1 January 2020 and depicts a triple-pointed shield with a grey tabby cat and albino rabbit as supporters, with a four-leaf clover and tulip-tree leaf being displayed. For the helm, a green cap commonly worn by Klaisans is displayed, with ferns from Felisenke being shown on top. The coat of arms is used on official documents and other affairs.

Strangely, both of the animals the supporters are based on both died within a week of each other in January 2021.

Klaise's economy is mainly based on exporting service and labor rather than exporting produced goods. In early 2018 Klaise begin cuniculture, the farming of rabbits. These rabbits are raised in a farm in Saukrame and are potentially Klaise's main export in the coming years. Previously in 2016, Klaise had logged tulip trees in Scipler County, in the area that would become Isciler, but in early 2017 environmental concerns came up and it was deemed destructive by the Autocratic Office to continue felling trees in Klaise's forests.

Foreign relations

Klaise maintains foreign relations with a few micronations. Klaise is a founding member of the Based Micronational Union.
