Klaise (/klaɪs/, /kleɪz/), officially known as the Autocracy of Klaise, is a micronation in eastern North America. The country is on the Cumberland Plateau in the backwaters of the Cumberland River's watershed. The country is rural with a few villages. Most of the country is covered with a temperate forest in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Most of the country lives in the southern part, with the majority of people living in Monomew, the capitol. The country's history dates back to 2009 when the country was founded as a pretend country on a school playground until it evolved into the country it is today.

The country is made up of a single state, but there are wards for municipal governments. Klaise also has a colonial presence, owning a few exclaves of land such as Kataun and Bleuselt. The country's government is an autocracy, meaning a single individual holds most of the power over the country. Although Klaise is an autocracy, wards can govern themselves however they like and private land-owners have a considerable amount of freedom over their properties.

History

All dates are formatted to the Klaisan calendar.

Before Klaise (before 200)

Before European settlers such as the British came to the area around Klaise, the Shawnee people lived in the area as there is evidence of this in the surrounding area. It is not known if any Amerindian people lived on or used the land that would become Klaise, though. In the late 20th century, logging began to happen in the area. This is evident by the logging roads and leftover litter from that time. In the early 1990s, the first Klaisan settlers would buy a single plot of land to build a house in what would become Monomew.

(250 to 320) Establishment

Flag of the Duchy of Dodoa (295)

In circa 265 (late 2009), Bijbojique was created. This micronation was created by elementary kids on the playground, and it was a monarchy. This country never claimed the land where Klaise is, but as a state it is considered a predecessor of what is now Klaise. This soon fell into irrelevancy until the year circa 300 (early 2011) when the Duchy of Dodoa was founded. This country had its own flag and would be the first micronation on the land where Klaise is. This micronation was later renamed Schandeleiria and the duchy was replaced with an autocracy. This micronation would be the first Klaisan country to be documented on any micronational wiki. On the wiki, this country would be removed around 2012 after politically incorrect things were allegedly said to the wiki's chat from the Autocrat.

(320 to 360) Middle Age

From the years 320 to 360 (late 2012 to January 2015), this time is called the Middle Age in Klaisan history due to it's median position in terms of time between the founding of Dodoa and the current day (mid 2019). During this time, Schandeleiria would be renamed to Klaise after a typo of the word "Klause" occurred and the Autocrat thought the name sounded neat. Klaise was slowly developing a culture and language until it became apparent Klaise had its own distinct culture and was a country that not just Klaisan nationals participated in, but other "normies" as well. In Klaise, the Express Route system was created for fast transportation of vehicles between the major settlements.

Through the 360s, Klaise would relocate cats to Kataun Parcel. These cats would be taken care of until they went to a different house in the area around Kataun. This would be known as the Kataun Exchange and these cats would move between Kataun and Klaise, incidentally or with purpose. During this exchange, cats that already lived in Kataun would relocate themselves to Klaise, so there truly was an exchange of cats between the two territories.

(360 to 376) Beginning of the Modern Age

During the year 2015, Klaise would continue to be a micronation with a developing culture and identity. The country would begin to be a center for music and entertainment, and its citizens would indulge in prank calling. During this time, a few outsiders would still partake in and enjoy Klaisan culture until in the year 376 (December 2015), the First Meme occurred. During this time, Klaise created its own writing script which would fall into obscurity a few months later. The First Meme happened on 3 December 2015 when macronational authorities cited four individuals, including the Autocratic Office, for posting dank epic memes on a Facebook chat which were allegedly more obscene than the law would allow for a minor to see, despite the posters themselves being minors. This resulted in the expulsion of these individuals from the macronational institution, and they would be put through a diversion, which was an alternative to macronational court. The weird name of this charge would cause rumors among normies, and the names of those involved would soon be defamed. The Autocrat wasn't the only one effected by the First Meme, as many things changed for the country as a whole.

(376 to 400) Post First Meme

Pier on Lake Kekyl in 385

After the First Meme happened, Klaise became an isolated country and the Autocratic Office would stay in Klaise for a few months until the year 390 (late 2016), when Klaise's Autocrat would begin to leave the country for macronational responsibilities again. Klaise is reformed and becomes a federation of individual "states" (state governments didn't exist) and was renamed to Schandeleiria. During the 380s (mid 2016), Schandeleiria would be a host of synth music and continue to produce entertainment, but no longer indulged in prank calls. Through the 380s, development of Vincememe, a town on the Cervosia River began. In 382 (early 2016), Schandeleiria's northern neighbor, Aquilonia, took control of the Cervosia region so Klaisan colonists moved south to create Lake Kekyl which would make Kekyl and the Geoxe region thrive.

Beginning in 389, the downfall of Schandeleiria as a country began. The draining of Lake Kekyl caused a high demand of water, but a low supply due to Aquilonian tensions over the Cervosia River. All of the demand in Kekyl disappeared, and an economic recession began. Demand for wood went down while wood was still being produced, causing a large surplus of wood. This wood was used to build a storage building in the Scipler region on the site of what would become Isciler. Around the year 396, Schandeleiria would be renamed back to Klaise. In 397, Klaise begins exploring the Diluvame area, which is farther downstream from Cervosia. The 390s are regarded by some to be the worst time in Klaisan history due to these economic effects along with other factors. This would lead to Klaise's Second Meme, which resulted in Klaise's Autocratic Office permanent expulsion from the macronational institute.

The Second Meme resulted in further defamation of Klaise and its Autocrat, and caused much more problems than the First Meme before it. The Autocratic Office has deemed it a problem of micronational security to disclose the Second Meme and its events, so it cannot be explained in this article.

(400 to 430) Post Second Meme

The Isciler Tower, built in 401

After the Second Meme happened, Klaise remained an isolated country and the Autocratic Office would stay in Klaise to this day (2019). Development of the wilderness to the north continued with the Cervosia Bridge built in 400 and the Isciler Tower built in 401. The town of Isciler would continue to thrive to this day, but the second attempt at a Cervosian colony failed at Cervosia Bridge. The failure of this colony was also caused by the Aquilonians who came and took over the area around the Cervosia Bridge. The bridge would soon fall into a state of disrepair and would be washed out by a flash flood in 410. Into the 420s (early 2018), the Autocratic Office began taking precautions to prevent a continuation of the Second Meme, or a Third Meme. This caused the Autocratic Office to go offline until the year 428 when the Autocratic Office returned to the internet. The 430s (late 2018-2019) would be a time when Klaisan web developers would see their work become popular, such as with the Normie Test or the Do you like memes website in general.

Etymology

Klaise comes from a misspelling of the name "Klause", and the Autocrat at the time thought the name sounded cool after doing the typo many times before and renamed the country which was then Schandeleiria to Klaise. The name Schandeleiria comes from the Autocrat's surname. The name Dodoa came from the Autocrat's fascination with the dodo, the flightless bird that went extinct on Mauritius in the seventeenth century. The name Bijbojique, the original playground micronation, comes from the founder's pet chihuahua's name Big Boy and adding -ique to the end. Later on, the hard "G" in the name would be replaced with a softer G sound, implied by "J". The dog the country was named after would later be attacked by a much larger dog in 332 (mid 2013) and pass away.

Flag

The flag of Klaise features the colors navy blue, white, and goldenrod yellow derived from Kentucky's flag. It is speculated that the Klaisan flag is just a Dolan Duck meme in reference to the Autocrat's name, but it has not been confirmed nor denied. Instead of the 10:19 ratio that the US and Kentucky flags use, Klaise uses the 3:5 ratio. The flag is a horizontal tricolor with a simplified version of the Katzedemblem on it, a symbol that is a depiction of a cat's head, Klaise's national animal. The seal is placed 1/3 from the left edge and halfway between the top and bottom.

Historically, Klaise's colors have alternated between navy blue or maroon (dark red), with yellow being a secondary color. The main color of Klaise changes to the current paradigm of the country. Currently, it is navy blue, as the country deemed the previous red-on-black banner to be too edgy. Before the "Edgy Banner" was dedicated in 390, the flag was a simple Katzedemblem colored light blue on top of a white banner, which had been the Klaisan Flag since at least 2013. Before this, Klaise's flag was never officially dedicated but contained both blue and red colors.

Seal

All designs of the Katzedemblem

The Katzedemblem is the most recognized symbol of Klaise. It was created by the Autocrat as a personal symbol in circa 290. This symbol would later become the emblem for Schandeleiria, the predecessor of Klaise. The emblem is a cat's head, with the two diamonds on the sides being ears, the central diamond being the face, and the bottom diamond being a neck or a head. It is disputed if the emblem is a cat's bust or just a big headed cat.

Coat of arms

Klaise's Coat of Arms

The country's coat of arms was officially dedicated on 1 January 2020 (450) and depicts a triple-pointed shield with a grey tabby cat and albino rabbit as supporters, with a four-leaf clover and tulip-tree leaf being displayed. For the helm, a green cap commonly worn by Klaisans is displayed, with ferns from Felisenke being shown on top. The coat of arms is used on official documents and other affairs.

Government

Constitution

Klaise has drafted a Constitution in late 2019, but it has yet to be made official.

Autocratic Office

The Autocratic Office is the highest micronational office in Klaise. This office's duties are mainly executive and legislative, but may also be judicial. Unlike a monarchy, the Autocratic Office isn't chosen by heir, although a dynasty may exist. Although the Autocratic Office exists, democracy still occurs in Klaise in different municipalities. The Autocrat may be presented with potential laws by individuals or create his own laws, and may add laws via an Autocratic Act, which is the way the Autocrat makes changes to the current Klaisan state. The office does not tax Klaisan citizens, as its main source of income is through private investors who are Klaisan nationals.

Ochlocracy

Although Klaise's state is officially an autocracy, the micronation may also be regarded as a ochlocracy, a country ran directly by its people not through democracy, but through a collective. Due to Klaise's monogenous population, this system isn't completely flawed due to everyone having the same religion, ethnicity and culture. Because it is easier for the Autocratic Office, and gives more freedom to the people, Klaise more often functions as an ochlocracy than an autocracy. A time when this was very prevalent was during a full-blown cat turf war in the early 400s (early 2017) in all of Klaise between stray feral cats and the domesticated cats in Monomew. The country operated as an ochlocracy until it became necessary to govern the country as an autocracy to stop the turf wars. These strays would then be dealt with and peace would come back to Klaise so it could function as an ochlocracy again. In a way, a check-and-balance system exists naturally, but it isn't official.

Citizenship

To be a citizen of Klaise, one must be born to a mother who is a Klaisan citizen. To become a citizen or an honorary national of Klaise, one must be given citizenship by the Autocratic Office. Citizenship allows for being counted in the Klaisan census and other analytics, and being able to live in Klaise with the blessing of the Autocratic Office. To become a citizen or a national, one must be knowledgable about Klaisan culture to a fluent extent, and must identify micronationally with Klaise. The difference between a citizen and a national is simply if the individual lives in Klaise or not. A national does not live in Klaise, while a citizen does. A unique aspect of Klaise is productive animals that aren't normally consumed by people are considered nationals, so in censuses, cats and dogs are included in the population.

Wards

Wards in Klaise are municipalities intended to organize smaller areas, in order to organize them geographically and to manage them. Wards are best compared to northern England's hundreds. Wards don't have a government of their own and are mainly used for analytical and geographic purposes. As of the year 2020, there are seven contiguous wards in Klaise. Many Klaisans will use wards as their hometown in conversation. The current system of wards used to be known as counties but that term was deemed inaccurate for what these divisions of the country really were, as they contained no government of their own. The unofficial Constitution describes wards as at the very least, "a locally relevant plot of land".

Parcels

Parcels in Klaise are administrative divisions that are usually separated from the main body of the country. Parcels are defined by the unofficial Constitution as "being an area detatched from contiguous Klaise yet still outright owned by Klaise". Historically, these areas have been known as colonies, but those were never defined by law as to what a colony is, or what it could do within its self. Parcels are capable of establishing a semi-autonomous local government, and are by law, capable of becoming a successor of Klaise and moving the source of all the country's management and continuity to its self if the parcel were to become more relevant and populous than Klaise proper. Parcels also usually have their own symbolism, such as flags and coats of arms. Parcels are usually comparable in size to Klaise proper with Kataun Parcel being only eight percent smaller than Klaise. Parcels are capable of organizing their own Wards, but due to most of Klaise's parcels having little to no development, none have organized any wards of their own. By law, a parcel doesn't need to be geographically separate from the country, it only needs to be so large and uninhabited it is necessary to organize it as an entire entity at the scale of a state. However, small detatched territories would always be defined as parcels.

Geography

Main article: Regions of Klaise

Klaise is a country that is divided into seven contiguous wards, and has three non-contiguous parcels.

The southern parts of Klaise are on top of a ridge in what is known as southeastern Kentucky. The ridge slopes down in the north where slopes can be as steep as 45% grade. Klaise has different microclimates, which can differ with variations of a humid subtropical climate. Temperatures are usually cooler in the lower elevations due to sunlight being blocked from these areas by the country's mountainous terrain, which gives Umberwalde Ward its name.

Klaise's urban areas are in the Metropolitan region, which is an open area of rolling hills on top of the ridge. North of the developed areas is the edge where the plateau gives way to the Felisenke Valley. On the east is the Scipler Gorge, which is the most extreme in depth, with cliffs in some places, and on the west is the Smokia Valley, which is more shallow and acts as a drainage basin for the west. The bedrock is made of sandstone in Smokia, and limestone in Scipler. This is thought to be the reason why Smokia has more gentle slopes than Scipler does.

Northern border

The northern border of the country is officially defined as being a straight line parallel to the northern Geoxe Ward border, ~130 meters north of it. Despite Felisenke and Umberwalde Wards being defined as extending to the Cervosia River, Klaise's official territory isn't defined this way. This causes development within these wards to be casually extending into unincorporated areas. The only part of the country that has land across the river is in the extreme northeastern corner of Felisenke Ward, where Deilton is settled at a river crossing.

Towns

Main article: Cities of Klaise

In Klaise, there are a few settlements. Monomew is the most populous town in the country, and is also the capitol. Monomew is home to more than half of the country's population. To the north is Saukrame, which is an emerging economic area. Saukrame is the country's industrial center, producing produce such as berries and livestock such as rabbits. To the east of Monomew is Ivydon, a developing settlement in Felixshire Ward. Many developments are active in this area and it is becoming an industrial center for the country. Ausshaffen is a small village north of Monomew in Geoxe Ward, surrounded completely by a wall. The rest of the settlements around the country aren't developed or inhabited, such as Isciler and Deilton.

Water

There are a few bodies of water in Klaise, and the most prominent and permanent is the Cervosia River in the north. The Vincememe Dam held back a reservoir on the river in the early 380s (early 2016) before the dam was inundated by a flash flood.

Lake Kekyl existed from circa 290 to 389. In 389, the dam was undone because of poor water quality. Currently in 442 (mid 2019), the area where Lake Kekyl once sat is now Geoxeton, which lays at the turn where the Geoxe River runs through a canal into the northern parts of Felixshire instead of Scipler, which irrigates crops in the region. Recently in the 460s (mid 2020) a basin was dug out for a pond to exist north of Geoxeton, in the same area Lake Kekyl existed.

A few drainage basins are in the area, such as the Felixshire River, which is not a river, but a dry drainage basin, and the Geoxe River, which feeds it's water to a pond north of Geoxeton and only flows for a week or two before drying up again. The Geoxe and Felixshire Rivers join to form the Scipler River, which then runs through the Scipler Gorge and feeds into the Cervosia River, which then runs through a variety of tributaries which feed into the Cumberland River.

Highways

Klaise's highway map (Click to view)

Main article: Transportation in Klaise

Klaise has a road system called the State Road System which connects major places together. The current standard for a route to be considered a Highway in the State Road System is if a wheeled vehicle of at least 4 foot width can travel at least 15 miles per hour on the route safely. Klaise currently has ~300 meters of Highway-class roads in its system, with this amount expected to double by 2021 as roads into the north of the country may be constructed to Highway standards. Highways are almost never paved, and the only Highways seen outside of Metropolitan Klaise are in Scipler County, primarily.

For other roads, the State Road System designates these as a Route. The country has many roads like this, and many cannot support vehicle traffic, but most can support bicycles. There is no maximum steepness for these routes, and some are as steep as 70% grade. Currently, there is no Highway-class road that connects the northern counties to the Metro region, but there have been improvements. In late 2019, Route 55 was rerouted between Isciler and Vincememe, and now has a much more gentle ascent up the ~70 meter hill, but is still very steep and far too curvy for bicycle traffic. Many of these routes are expected to be completely redone by 2021, such as Route 55 again between Isciler and Deilton, and Route 45 between Geoxeton and Totarborton, and maybe Route 40 between Totarborton and Deilton.

In road routing, the number indicates it's the same route, but the designation of Highway or Route is the capability of that road.

Bridges

There are a variety of bridges in Klaise. They mainly span the Geoxe River and are located in Geoxeton. There is a suspension bridge, a chisled stone bridge, and an improvised stone bridge.

Demographics

Population

Klaise's population density per 25² meters

Klaise has a population of around 20 which fluctuates regularly due to Monomew's cat population. The people in the country partake in Appalachian culture, and are ethnically British. Klaisan individuals mainly have the North Atlantid phenotype. 100% of the country is White. The majority of the population lives in the southern parts of the country, mostly in Monomew, having nearly 60% of the population. The rest of the country resides in Geoxe Ward. The regions outside of Metropolitan Klaise are only occasionally inhabited, with Isciler being the only town outside of the main metro area and also in the contiguous area of Klaise to be inhabited regularly. There are two Klaisan colonies that are permanently inhabited, such as Bleuselt which is more than a mile northwest of Monomew, and another unincorporated area owned by a Klaisan citizen nearly 20 miles north of Monomew.

Crime

Crime in Klaise on a micronational level is usually cats having turf wars or people entering Klaise's land without permission with the intent to steal.

Religion

Klaise is a predominantly Christian country. Most, if not all of the country are non-denominational Christians but their beliefs are derived mostly from Protestantism, especially the Baptist, Pentecostal and Holiness denominations.

Economy

Klaise's economy is mainly based on exporting service and labor rather than exporting produced goods. Only until 415 (early 2018) did Klaise begin cuniculture, the farming of rabbits. These rabbits are raised in a farm in Saukrame and are potentially Klaise's main export in the coming years. Previously in the 380s (2016), Klaise had logged tulip trees in Scipler Ward, in the area that would become Isciler, but in the 400s (early 2017) environmental concerns came up and it was deemed destructive by the Autocratic Office to continue felling trees in Klaise's forests.
