The 2020 New Franklin by-election was the first by-election in the House of Burgesses in New Virginia.
Background
Thomas Bainbridge, an independent politician, won one of the four cantonal at-large seats in the 2020 general election.
In mid-October, Bainbridge presented the North Watch Act to the House of Burgesses, where it was then forwarded to the President of New Virginia and signed. As a result, Bainbridge was created a muncipal burgess of North Watch, vacating his previous seat.[1]
Shortly thereafter, the Home Secretary called the by-election, which was scheduled to take place on 29 October 2020.
Candidates and campaign
Senator Sophia Albina resigned from the senate and declared her candidacy on behalf for the Free Democratic Party. The National Party candidate was Addison Dillon, who had previously run for the cantonal seat during the 2020 general election. Christina Nowell ran for the election as an independent candidate.
The campaigning period was open between 22–28 October. Albina released a lengthy campaign statement in the early stages of this period.[2]
